I will soon be teaching an undergraduate course (first year) on biodiversity,
with a global perspective. I would be very grateful of any suggestions for a
good text book(s).

I had my ecology class (Juniors) read E.O. Wilson's The Diversity of Life
outside of class. Certainly some of the stuff is dated, but it was still
really good.
