[ECOLOG-L] PhD position in functional ecology of dung beetle communities in New Zealand grasslands

2018-07-31 Thread Andrew D. Barnes
PhD position: Investigating species traits, interactions, and ecosystem
services of novel dung beetle communities in New Zealand grasslands

The introduction and expansion of livestock farming systems in New Zealand
and Australia has brought with it many environmental challenges, as these
regions lack the organisms required to process the vast amounts of
ungulate dung now produced in pastoral grasslands. Dung beetles
(Scarabaeidae) have been more recently introduced in these regions for the
use of their feeding and reproductive behaviour of burying and consuming
mammalian waste. This activity has been shown to increase soil health and
reduce runoff of nutrients into waterways, increase pasture productivity,
reduce pests and disease and even reduce greenhouse gas emissions from
pastoral systems. However, a better understanding of the factors
determining the functional efficiency of novel dung beetle communities is
needed to determine how their future introductions will facilitate the
continued management of ecological degradation in agricultural grasslands.

This project will be based in New Zealand and will focus on the
performance of recently introduced species of dung beetles. The PhD
student will carry out a range of experiments in the lab and the field
aimed at determining how single and multi-species mixtures of dung beetles
affect ecosystem functions and services such as dung burial, soil
nutrients and pasture growth. Furthermore, the student will investigate
the role of functional traits, environmental characteristics, and intra-
and interspecific interactions in determining how these novel dung beetle
communities function and supply ecosystem services in agricultural
landscapes. These experiments will be coupled with field surveys across
New Zealand at sites where beetles have been previously released to
determine whether results from experiments support and explain patterns
that are observed in the field.

To fill this position, we are seeking an independent and highly motivated
applicant with:
• An Honours or MSc degree in a relevant subject (e.g., ecology,
biology, entomology)
• Experience in ecological field work and/or lab and field
experiments
• Sound skills in analysing ecological data (preferably with R)
• Experience in soil ecology (would be highly advantageous)
• Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written)

We are offering an exciting position for a PhD candidate to be based at
the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand under the supervision
of Dr Andrew Barnes and Prof. Louis Schipper and working closely with Dr
Simon Fowler and Dr Quentin Paynter at Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research.
The candidate will also have the opportunity to collaborate with a number
of researchers at the University of Western Australia, University of New
England, and Charles Sturt University within a broader project
investigating introduced dung beetles in New Zealand and Australia. The
position is fully funded for a fixed term of three years (including a
stipend, full tuition fees and research costs) and is to begin as soon as
possible. Candidates should send electronic applications as a single PDF
document comprising a letter of motivation, curriculum vitae, and
scientific publications (if applicable) to Dr Barnes
(andrew.bar...@waikato.ac.nz).
Review of applications will begin on the 31st of August 2018 and will
continue until the position is filled.

[ECOLOG-L] Two Postdoc Positions in Macroecology and Global Change Biology

2018-07-31 Thread Marta Jarzyna
Applications are invited for two postdoctoral researcher positions in the
Jarzyna lab (opening August 2018; http://www.majarzyna.com/) in the
Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology at The Ohio State
University (OSU).

Position 1 (Biodiversity Change): The successful candidate will conduct
research in the broad area of macroecology and large scale biodiversity
change. Potential areas of interest include, but are not limited to, spatial
and temporal scaling of biodiversity and its change, trait-based
biogeography, and implications of global change for biodiversity. An ability
to traverse community-level and species-level perspectives and to address
processes at different spatial and temporal scales are particularly welcome.

Position 2 (ButterflyNet): The successful candidate will join an ongoing
NSF-funded project ButterflyNet—a collaboration with researchers from
Harvard University, City University of New York, Georgetown University, and
the University of Florida. ButterflyNet’s goals are to produce the first
fully resolved species-level phylogeny of butterflies and synthesize
available databases on host associations, reproductive and life-history
traits, ecological characteristics such as habitat associations and
mobility, and patterns of geographic distributions. Potential research
projects include butterfly assemblage dynamics, trait-environment
relationships, implications of global change for butterfly diversity, and
biogeography and evolution of butterflies. Knowledge of butterfly biology
and ecology is welcome, but not essential.

Both positions offer thematic flexibility and in their application letter
candidates should briefly describe their preferred area of activity.
Question-driven research and creative ideas are valued. Required
qualifications are a Ph.D. in ecology, evolutionary biology, statistics,
mathematics, or closely related fields. A solid working knowledge of
ecological modeling, GIS or remote sensing, and statistics are required for
both positions. Candidates with strong experience in hierarchical modeling
and species distribution modeling will be given preference. Candidates must
have excellent English writing and verbal communication skills, as well as
an established record of high productivity. Both positions are available as
early as September 1, 2018 (start date is negotiable) for the duration of
one year, with possibility of extension to a second year depending on
satisfactory performance and funding availability.

To apply please send, in one pdf, a cover letter clearly stating which
position the candidate is applying for and addressing how the candidate’s
expertise meets the position requirements listed above, CV, and contact info
(phone and email) for three referees to majarz...@gmail.com. In the subject
of all emails, please include your name and the position the candidate is
applying for (e.g., “Application for Biodiversity Change Postdoc:
LASTNAME”). The final selection process will begin on August 15, 2018 and
will continue until both positions are filled. Please send all inquiries to
Dr. Jarzyna at majarz...@gmail.com. Dr. Jarzyna passionately believes that a
diverse team will enable a broader perspective and enhance creativity, and
strongly encourages applications from women, minorities, and otherwise
underrepresented candidates.

The Ohio State University is committed to establishing a culturally and
intellectually diverse environment. We are an equal opportunity employer.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without
regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation or identity,
national origin, disability status, or protected veteran status.

[ECOLOG-L] Postdoctoral position in Landscape Ecology of Plant-Microbial Interactions

2018-07-31 Thread Michelle Afkhami
Postdoctoral position in Landscape Ecology of Plant-Microbial
Interactions (Department of Biology, University of Miami, Miami, FL)

Drs. Michelle Afkhami and Christopher Searcy are interested in hiring a
co-advised postdoctoral scholar in Landscape Ecology of Plant-Microbial
Interactions in the Department of Biology at University of Miami (Miami,
FL).

The postdoctoral scholar will conduct research to investigate the role
of plant-microbial interactions in the landscape ecology and
conservation of plant species in the imperiled Florida Scrub ecosystem.
We envision approximately 50% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time (or
more depending on her or his interests) will include projects focusing
on the effects of plant-microbial interactions on landscape-scale
species distributions and/or plant demography. The other ~50% of time
will be spent on postdoc-developed projects. We are looking for a
postdoctoral scholar who can bring his or her perspective to the system
and develop new ideas to pursue. The postdoc will have the opportunity
to collect, analyze, and integrate multiple forms of data (e.g., new
greenhouse/field experiments, existing long term field data, soil
microbial sequencing data) and/or learn new modeling and molecular
skills (e.g., Species Distribution Modeling, Integral Projection
Modeling, high-throughput single cell sequencing). He or she will also
have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate and graduate students and
write manuscripts as lead author.

Dr. Chris Searcy is a landscape ecologist who will advise the postdoc on
modeling and landscape ecology, and Dr. Michelle Afkhami will advise on
plant-microbe and molecular methods. This research will be done at
University of Miami and the nearby Archbold Biological Station
(http://www.archbold-station.org/).

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, or a
related discipline, and experience conducting research with plants,
microbes, and/or modeling (ideally plant-microbial interactions). Other
important qualifications are a background in statistical methods, a
strong work ethic, problem-solving and time management skills, a track
record of publications, and independent research experience. A
background in microbial community sequencing, demographic modeling,
species distribution modeling, and/or data analysis in R are desirable
but not required.

This is a one year position with an expectation for renewal provided
that first-year performance is satisfactory. Start date is flexible, but
an ideal candidate would begin immediately or as soon as possible.

We will be at Ecological Society of America meeting next week and can
meet with attending perspective postdocs there.

All interested applicants, please send your CV (including contact
information for 3 references), a description of previous experience (~1
short paragraphs), and reason(s) for wanting this job (~1 short
paragraph) to Dr. Michelle Afkhami (mea...@miami.edu).

Learn more about the position at
https://michelleafkhami.wordpress.com/join-the-lab/. Review of
applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is
filled.
