[ECOLOG-L] (EGU 2019) Call for abstracts: Upscaling detailed models & measurements for integration in Earth System Models

2018-11-28 Thread Katerina Georgiou
Please see below for an EGU 2019 session that may be of interest. The deadline
for abstract submission is Jan. 10th and travel support applications are due by
Dec. 1st. Experimentalists and modelers welcome!

SSS11.6: Upscaling detailed models to landscape for long-term predictions and
integration in Earth System Models

https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2019/session/30833

Conveners: Claudia Cagnarini, Katerina Georgiou, Stefano Manzoni, and Artem
Vladimirov

Abstract: Earth System Models (ESMs) and landscape-scale long-term models are
often unable to capture ecosystem patterns and dynamics as most ecosystem
functions emerge from the underlying complexity of soil/vegetation processes
and feedbacks. While incorporation of detailed process models is crucial for a
better representation of the soil and land-surface processes across spatial and
temporal scales it is still a challenge to identify, prioritize and scale key
driving factors and mechanisms. Furthermore, if the underlying nonlinear
processes exhibit threshold effects and trigger complex emergent feedbacks,
such behavior should find a proper representation in the upscaled models. The
aim of this session is to bring together state-of-the-art expertise in soil
biogeochemistry, ecology, geomorphology, soil physics, hydrology, and
climatology to reveal and address knowledge gaps, encourage knowledge transfer
between disciplines, and explore the potential of synthesis and
hybrid-modelling approaches towards improving predictions of soil dynamics and
vulnerability and resilience under ongoing global change. Cross-disciplinary
collaboration and integration in soil science is crucial to inform and guide
soil management efforts. We invite theoretical and empirical studies that
bridge the gap between scales, from detailed process understanding to emergent
landscape-scale behavior. Specifically, we seek model and dataset analyses, as
well as scaling methodologies, that will help advance quantitative
understanding and multi-scale modelling of soil dynamics for integration in
ESMs.

[ECOLOG-L] Forest disturbances and range shifts - Special session at the Landscape Ecology World Congress (2019) in Milano, Italy

2018-11-28 Thread Buma, Brian
Abstracts are being accepted for a special session on disturbances, range
shifts, and adaptation to climate change at the International Association for
Landscape Ecology World Congress, in Milano, Italy, July 1-5 2019.

Title: Forest disturbances as drivers of tree species range shifts under global
change

Brief synopsis: In order to survive in the changing climate, tree species need
to either adapt to the new conditions or shift their distribution range. At the
same time, the effects of abiotic (e.g. fire, wind, drought) and biotic (e.g.
insects, pathogens) disturbance agents are increasing throughout many parts of
the globe. Disturbance regimes influence forest dynamics and distributions in
complex ways – the process of mortality and regeneration is likely to interact
with those of migration or persistence processes. Together the new climate
conditions and disturbances will result in latitudinal, longitudinal and
elevational shifts in tree species distributions, strongly shaping the
distribution and composition of future forested landscapes.

[ECOLOG-L] Nominations Sought for Ornithology’s Katma Award

2018-11-28 Thread Jonathan Miller
The American Ornithological Society is currently seeking nominations for their
annual Katma Award, which recognizes publications that propose ideas or test
theories that challenge current ornithological dogma and could change the
course of thinking about the biology of birds.

The award was originally established by the Cooper Ornithological Society in
2003 through the generous gift of Dr. Robert Storer, who proposed the name
“Katma,” derived from the Greek work kat, which means “against.” The award
consists of a $2500 prize and a certificate and is announced at the American
Ornithological Society’s annual meeting (http://amornithmeeting.org/)

“Why is katma needed?” wrote Dr. Storer. “Science moves forward by the
production and acceptance of new ideas, yet it has been increasingly difficult
to air new ideas in both the pure and applied sciences. Serious work that
questions current dogma too often is stifled by those who are angered by seeing
their own work questioned. Great katmatists like Galileo and Darwin are heroes
of science.”

Nominees for the award do not need to be members of the American Ornithological
Society, nor do papers nominated need to have been published in an AOS journal.
Full eligibility and nomination information is available on the AOS website at
http://americanornithology.org/content/aos-katma-award. The deadline for the
current nomination cycle is December 14. Please contact
i...@americanornithology.org with any questions.

[ECOLOG-L] Disappearing snow and ecosystem mortality - Special session at IALE 2019 call for abstracts.

2018-11-28 Thread Buma, Brian
Hi all,

If you're planning on attending the International Association for Landscape
Ecology's World Congress in 2019 (Milano, Italy, early July 2019), consider
proposing a presentation in our special session on the effects of snowloss on
ecosystem health and functioning.

Abstracts are open now.

Title: Disappearing snow and altered ecosystems: Observations, experiments,
and outcomes

Synopsis: Winter snow is a critical component of ecosystem health. It insulates
the soil, provides protection from winds, and results in slow water release
over the spring melt period. However, climate continues to change rapidly.
Snowpack depth, density, and duration are sensitive to small variations in
temperature even apart from changes in overall precipitation amounts or timing.
Declines in winter precipitation in some areas result in lower snow packs. In
others, the warming climate is causing rapid declines in snowpack by causing
shifts from snow to rain winter precipitation regimes. The end result is
increasing organism exposure to novel winter conditions. Many ecosystems are
located near the 0 degree winter temperature isotherm and vulnerable to this
aspect of global change; others are likely to experience shorter snow seasons,
resulting in changes in the fall or spring seasons. As a result, some species
are likely to decline while others may benefit from the new conditions. In any
case, ecosystem change is likely.

The transition from winter snow to low/no snow conditions is a threshold-like
phenomena, resulting from only slight warming or declines in precipitation. Yet
there are dramatic changes when that threshold is crossed. Soils are not
insulated from atmospheric temperature variation, resulting in potential
freezing events which alter nutrient availability, damage roots, and can cause
widespread mortality. Root damage may lead to increased drought vulnerability.
Aboveground communities are exposed to desiccating winds in addition, which can
drive dieback or mortality. Vulnerable budding tissue may freeze, resulting in
productivity declines over broad areas. These observations are becoming more
and more common in a variety of ecosystems.

SUMMARY: North American landscapes have been shaped by humans for millennia,
but the arrival of Europeans several centuries ago ushered in an era of rapid
conversion of eastern forests to cities, farms, transportation networks, and
second-growth woodlands. In recent decades, however, numerous remnants of
eastern old growth have been discovered, meticulously mapped, and studied. Many
of these ancient stands retain surprisingly robust complexity and vigor, and
scientists are developing strategies for restoration that will foster
biological diversity and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Forest
ecologists Andrew Barton and William Keeton bring together an edited volume
that breaks new ground in our understanding of eastern old-growth forest
ecosystems and their importance for resilience in an age of rapid environmental
change. Leading experts examine topics of contemporary forest ecology and
conservation across a broad geographic canvas in eastern North America.

REVIEWS:
"An important contribution to the burgeoning literature extolling the virtues
of forest complexity. As a compendium of the literature on forest heterogeneity
alone, this book is an indispensable reference for scholars and practitioners
of ecological forest management."
Gregory H. Aplet, Senior Science Director, The Wilderness Society

"Ecology and Recovery of Eastern Old-Growth Forests is extremely timely and
hugely important. Old-growth forests are quickly disappearing, and global
changes mandate that we find new approaches to manage them. Succinctly written
by prominent American and Canadian scientists, this book is a must-read for
forest professionals and enthusiastic forest lovers everywhere."
Christian Messier, Professor of Forest Ecology, Université du Québec à Montréal
and Université du Québec en Outaouais

"Finally, a much-needed, up-to-date treatise on the state of old-growth forests
in the East. All forest stakeholders should read this book."
