[ECOLOG-L] Conference: EMAPI. Invasive plants. Lisbon. Sep. 2017.

2016-11-22 Thread Daniel Montesinos
Please, find below the first announcement for the *14th International
Conference on Ecology and Management of Alien Plant Invasions*, which will
be held in *Lisbon *between the
*4th and 8th of September, 2017.*

The aim of the EMAPI 2017 is to promote the opportunity to share findings
and experiences — research, management, and policy — with professionals
from around the world. Following the decision of the EMAPI Core Group in
Hawaii during the last EMAPI meeting, the 14th Ecology and Management of
Alien Plant Invasions World Congress will be held in Lisbon, from 4th to
8th September 2017.

The Congress aims to become a benchmark event, by gathering a large number
of scientists, managers and policy makers from around the world, who will
interact and explore ways to face global and regional challenges presented
by alien plant invasions, for the benefit of the present and future
generations.

A mid-conference field trip will offer first-hand experience with
Portuguese coastal plant invasions, while also allowing extensive
opportunities for networking. For this international meeting, we are
expecting to bring together ~ 300 active researchers, managers and policy
makers. A special discount registration will be available to students.

[ECOLOG-L] Workshop - The consequences of neo-allopatry - May 22-23, 2013. Coimbra, Portugal

2013-04-22 Thread Daniel Montesinos

*The consequences of neo-allopatry*

*Local adaptation, reproductive isolation and beyond*

*May 22-23, 2013. Centre for Functional Ecology. Coimbra, Portugal*

Humans are eliminating dispersal barriers and dramatically expanding the
global distributions of many species. The result is that some recently
established populations are geographically isolated from their source
populations, which has been referred to as neo-allopatry.
Cross-continental introductions in particular have rapidly isolated
populations of many species, and there is circumstantial evidence for
divergent selection between native and non-native ranges for ecological
traits such as growth, herbivore defense, and competitive ability. There
is even evidence for incipient reproductive isolation between native and
non-native regions or introduced species. Theory predicts that divergent
selection of ecological traits can drive to speciation. Thus, exotic
invasions provide exceptionally good natural experiments in which to
look for the early stages of allopatric processes.

During this one-and-a-half-day workshop we will discuss the consequences
of neo-allopatry at the Centre for Functional Ecology of the
/Universidade de Coimbra/, Portugal. Registrations are free and
mandatory, please send your CV and a one-page motivation letter to

Re: [ECOLOG-L] Used a tablet for field work?

2012-05-16 Thread Daniel Montesinos

Dear David and Steve,

I've used my smartphone intensively for data collecting. I strongly
discourage you to use a tablet for a simple reason, it is very heavy!

I also discourage you to use an on-screen keyboard to introduce the data
into the spreadsheet, it gets messy easily and lacks precision. Instead,
I suggest you get a smartphone with large screen and a hard keyboard. I
used an HTC Touch Pro but it is quite outdated already. I've heard a lot
of good things about the Motorola Droid 4:

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/02/10/droid-4-review-incredible-keyboard-awesome-speeds/

Phones are cheaper than tablets, they are lighter, they can have a real
keyboard, they can load and edit spreadsheets, they are more resistant,
and if they break, you still can afford to buy another one. As for
saving your data, it is just as easy (or more) than a tablet.

I hope it helps! Daniel.

On 16-05-2012 16:42, David Inouye wrote:
I'd like a way to replace data entry on paper in the field with an

inflorescences with different numbers of flowers). Has anyone used
something like the Blackberry PlayBook, an Android tablet, Nook, iPad,
etc. with spreadsheet software? Recommendations for or against
particular solutions?

I have also considered a ruggedized PC and a ruggedized tablet (Motion
F5V), but they are a LOT more expensive than other tablet options
would be.

[ECOLOG-L] pdf software

2010-10-04 Thread Daniel Montesinos
Hi Johanna and Ecologgers,

I would definitely recommend you Mendeley: www.mendeley.com

Mendeley is a free bibliographic software that lets you organize your pdf
collection; and also open, highlight and comment your documents. It also has
a plugin for Word (Win or Mac) and OpenOffice that let's you generate and
manage bibliographies on your manuscripts.

Adding pdf's to Mendeley is as easy as dropping the pdf files on the
Mendeley window. The software automatically extracts the metadata and adds
the citation to your database. It also scans for files your hard drive (or
the part of it that you choose) and adds them to your database. Oh, and it
synchronizes with Zotero if you already use that.

It is really a dream of a program that is saving me tons of time and making
the reading and management of papers a real pleasure. There is also a free
application for iphone/ipad that you can use to read your documents on these
gizmos.

As for tablets. I got recently an HP TouchSmart TM2 that may not be the best
think on the market but does a good job and is definitely the best value
(you can get one from $900). I don't think you'll be able to use a
pen/stylus on an ipad and therefore you probably won't be able to highlight
or underline pdf files there, but you'll definitely be able to read and
perhaps to annotate them.

Hope it helps, Daniel.

Subject: tablet pc for editing pdf with stylus?

Hi all,

I would like to read journal articles on my computer, write notes etc by
hand and then save the paper with notes.

I will soon be in the market for a new laptop. So I thought this might be a
good opportunity to get something that I can use to annotate or edit any pdf
with a stylus.

I have heard of people doing this with a tablet PC. It also looks like the
iPad now has that function. Any suggestions for brands/models? Any other
solutions? I am open to any suggestions, even if they perhaps require more
than one device (e.g. the iPad wouldn't function as my main computer).

Also - I'd be open to hearing what people's favorite (free) pdf annotating
software is.

Thanks,
Johanna
