[ECOLOG-L] 2 positions in Seagrass Ecology: Modelling and Experiments
Dear Colleagues, The Leibniz-Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) in Bremen, Germany is conducting a collaborative project (SEANARIOS, together with Israeli and Italian partners) to address the reaction of seagrass to scenarios of nutrient impact and elevated seawater temperature. We are now announcing the position of two postdoctoral researchers to 1) conduct experiments on seagrass reactions and 2) to develop a model to simulate seagrass trajectories under potential future environmental conditions. Please see https://www.leibniz-zmt.de/images/content/pdf/Stellenangebote_Vancancies/SEANARIOS_postdoc_140119.pdf for details. Best regards Hauke -- PD Dr. Hauke Reuter Dept. [ECOLOG-L] MCED Award for Ecological Modelling
Dear colleagues, We would like to draw your attention to the MCED award for ecological modeling, which is now announced for the eighth time. http://www.mced-ecology.org/?page_id=941 Young modelers can apply, who finished their bachelor, masters, or PhD degree within the last 3 years. The prize is divided into two categories: 1) For PhD and Postdocs. The 'main' prize is endowed with *500 EUR* (currently about 600$), the following prizes will be MCED textbooks. 2) For bachelor and Master students. The best nominee in this category will win *250 EUR* (currently about 300$), the following prizes will be MCED textbooks. The intention of the award is to foster the development and application of modern ecological modeling methods that can help to expand the understanding of complex ecological dynamics. With this focus, the MCED award follows the eponymous textbook for ecological modeling which has been published by Springer Publishing House and which provides a curriculum for ecological modeling for students, either for a university course or for self-learning. The MCED editors together with Springer Publishing House invite young ecologists who: - analyze ecological phenomena using ecological modeling approaches in an innovative way. - apply new modeling methods and techniques and thereby contribute to applied or theoretical ecology - use modeling frameworks to bridge the gap between basic science and application to enhance the understanding of complex ecological processes and dynamics As application, please mail-in the form which is available on www.mced-ecology.org under the section award. A committee, formed by the editors, the president of the GfÖ (Ecological Society of Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and representatives of the GfÖ Young Modelers Group will decide on the submitted proposals by mid June. The award ceremony will be held during the next GfÖ-Conference in Vienna, Austria in September 2018. [ECOLOG-L] Job Announcement: Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology
The Leibniz-ZMT GmbH currently offers several positions within the frame of the BMBF funded German-Indonesian SPICE III Program (Science for the Protection of Indonesian Coastal Ecosystems). The overarching goal of the bilateral SPICE Program is to address the scientific, social and economic issues related to the management of the Indonesian coastal ecosystems and their resources. In addition to strengthening the existing scientific data base on coastal ecosystems, the program promotes capacity and infrastructure building in the maritime sector in Indonesia and Germany and contributes to education and public awareness. The program is being carried out in cooperation among partners from several Indonesian and German universities and government research institutions. [ECOLOG-L] PhD-Position Ecological Modelling
PhD-Position for Ecological Modelling at the ZMT, Bremen, Germany http://www.zmt-bremen.de/files/main.php?language=en&a=inst&b=InJobs The Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) in Bremen has been recently elected member of the prestigious Leibniz Association, which is supported by the German Federal and State Governments. Through its research, ZMT contributes to developing science-based strategies for sustainable use of tropical coastal systems. To strengthen its research on the analysis of coastal tropical environments the ZMT is seeking a PhD-Student in ecological modelling. Focus will be on the spatial representation of different aspects of coastal ecological systems under various environmental constraints. This may include topics related to mangrove systems, coral-algae interaction, life history analysis of key species and functional relationships, however is not limited to this issues. Start date is negotiable in March or April 2009 for a 3 year period. Salary will be according to the German TV-L for a half-time position. Requirements: Applicants should have a Master's or Diploma degree in Ecology or related fields and experience in ecological modelling. We take for granted that the successful candidate has a strong interest in spatial explicit modelling methods such as cellular automata and individual/agent-based modelling. Knowledge of an object oriented programming language, preferable Java, is an asset. Good skills in English are essential. The successful candidate should have the ability to work in a team and have the willingness to work in an interdisciplinary research environment. Application: To apply, please send a cover letter including a short outline of your research interests, a complete CV and names with email addresses and phone numbers of two referees by email in a single pdf-file to the address below. Review will start on 5th February 2009 and will continue until the position is filled. Place of work is Bremen, however, travelling abroad will be part of the position. The ZMT is an equal opportunity employer. Disabled persons with comparable qualification receive preferential status. -- PD Dr. Hauke Reuter email: hauke.reu...@zmt.uni-bremen.de Dept. 2. Announcement Conference GMLS 08 in Bremen
Dear Colleagues, we invite you to attend the Conference on 'Implications of GM-Crop Cultivation at Large Spatial Scales' in Bremen, Germany, April 2008. The conference is supported by the German Ecological Society, the German Society for Human Ecology, the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation and the Universities Bremen, Kiel and Vechta. The conference aims at compiling methods and strategies, which address issues related to large scale and long term cultivation of GM plants. Topics include empirical work related to risk assessment, theoretical concepts, as well as methodological aspects such as modeling and data analysis facing large spatial and temporal dimensions. Conference: April 2. - 4., 2008, University of Bremen, Germany Deadlines: Contributions 31. January 2008 Registration 29. Conference Announcement: Large scale implications of GM-Crop cultivation
Dear Colleagues, we want to inform you about the Conference on 'Implications of GM-Crop Cultivation at Large Spatial Scales' in Bremen, Germany, April 2008. Ecological, agricultural and economic implications of genetically modified (GM) plants on large spatial scales are currently discussed intensively. It is still controversial however, how effects with great spatial extent can be assessed in the risk analysis process, in the approval procedure, in the planning of co-existence measures, and in post market monitoring. The conference aims at compiling methods and strategies, which address issues related to large scale and long term cultivation of GM plants. Topics include empirical work related to risk assessment, theoretical concepts, as well as methodological aspects such as modelling and data analysis facing large spatial and temporal dimensions.
