[ECOLOG-L] Post-Doctoral Researcher – Promoting Sustai nable Natural Resource Management

2013-11-13 Thread Nabin Baral
The Human
Dimensions of Natural Resource Management Laboratory at the School of
Environmental
and Forest Sciences, College of the Environment, University of Washington,
Seattle,
WA, is seeking candidates for the position of postdoctoral researcher in the
area of Promoting Sustainable Natural Resource Management. The position is full
time and offers competitive salary and benefits commensurate with experience.
The
initial appointment is for one year; annual renewals for an additional year
will be based on performance and availability of funds.

One
of our research interests at the Human Dimensions Lab is in the social
feasibility and impact assessment of a sustainable biofuels system within the
Pacific Northwest region. Our major goals are to determine and influence the
social feasibility of feedstock production, and to inform outreach and
education efforts to enhance feasibility. The research results would be used to
design behavioral change strategies to facilitate feedstock production. We
would be using social marketing theories, tools and techniques to develop those
strategies. The successful candidate will work directly with Dr. Stanley Asah
and
closely with Dr. Nabin Baral to develop and administer sub-projects in this
area of interest, particularly a social marketing plan.

Qualifications:
The
minimum qualification is a PhD, from an accredited institution, in Natural
Resource Management or closely related fields. The successful candidate will,
ideally, have expertise in designing and conducting interviews, mixed mode
quantitative
observations, qualitative and quantitative data analyses, accessing and
analyzing secondary social science data, oral presentations and publishing in
refereed
academic journals. Candidates who have taken courses in marketing, social
networks and persuasive communication, and some experience in experimental
research would be given serious consideration.

The
candidate selected for the position must be able to meet eligibility
requirements for work in the United States at the time of appointment and
continue working legally for the proposed term of the appointment.

Overall,
we are looking for someone who is self-motivated, positive, energetic, an
excellent communicator (both written and oral), a good leader, and has shown
strong commitment to scientific research in his/her career to date. A
successful candidate will be able to juggle multiple projects, be organized and
willing to work on site in the lab. You must be ready to hit the ground running
and integrate seamlessly into existing project teams to ensure that deadlines
can be met.

Responsibilities:
The
successful applicant is expected to conduct high-quality scientific research in
social marketing, social networks and empirical modeling. Primarily, the
candidate
will participate in and coordinate research and reporting on the social
feasibility and impact assessment of a sustainable biofuels system in the
Pacific Northwest.  A secondary
responsibility will include coordination among student-researchers and other
related interdisciplinary initiatives. The successful applicant will produce
refereed journal publications in high quality outlets, and present research
findings in professional settings. There will be opportunities to mentor
undergraduate and graduate student-researchers, assist in teaching courses in
the general area of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources, and participate in
grant
writing to support lab projects.

To
apply:
Interested
applicants should provide a formal letter of application, curriculum vitae,
copies
of transcripts, and the names and contact details of four referees who may be
contacted for letters of recommendation. Please send the application materials
in a single
PDF file electronically to the following address: nba...@uw.edu

Only
complete applications will be considered. Review of applications will begin ASAP
and will continue until a suitable candidate is hired. Applications received by
November 30, 2013 will be reviewed
certainly.

[ECOLOG-L] Abundance estimate references

2013-02-19 Thread Nabin Baral
Hello Ecolog Members: I've recently submitted an article about population size
estimate of an endangered bird species. I counted birds during the breeding
seasons at least five times per season for 10 years. For the sake of
comparison, I have also included the mean and the highest count as an estimate
of abundance. One of the reviewers is asking to include references of other
studies or methodological articles about the convenience or advantages of using
the mean or the maximum value of a series of counts. I have searched online,
but could not locate appropriate citations/articles. I hope that someone in the
list might help me about the references.

Please reply me off list if you know any references in this area. Thank you in
advance for your time.

Sincerely,
Nabin

[ECOLOG-L] Opportunity to collaborate on a PVA paper

2012-05-02 Thread Nabin Baral
Hello List Members: I am soliciting your interest to collaborate on a PVA
paper. I have been collecting data on populations of Critically Endangered Gyps
Vultures since 2002. Since the past few years, I have been thinking of writing
a paper on population viability analysis, but now I am committed to it. I know
something about theory behind the PVA, but I need some help in actually doing
the analysis with some software programs. This is the reason I am writing to
you.

If any of you are interested in allocating some time to teach me how to run the
analysis and co-authoring the manuscript, please reply me off list. My rough
estimate is that the prospective collaborator should aim to allocate around 10
hours of time. I would take the lead in all aspects of the manuscript
preparation. We can discuss more about the project and procedures via email.

The ideal collaboarator would be someone who has already published at least one
manuscript on PVA.

Thank you for your response.

Sincerely,
Nabin Baral, PhD

[ECOLOG-L] Looking for reviewers

2011-10-14 Thread Nabin Baral
Hello List: I am undertaking a research project on the contingent valuation of
snow leopards in Mount Everest National Park, Nepal. Basically I am surveying
visitors regarding how much they are willing to pay for the protection of snow
leopards in this park. I have just drafted a survey instrument and I am
looking for reviewers to critique it.

If any of you are interested in reviewing the survey instrument, please send
me an email off list. I will be more than happy to review your similar work in
return.

Thank you in anticipation of your favorable response.

Sincerely,

Nabin

[ECOLOG-L] Interpreting quadratic terms in regression

2010-12-17 Thread Nabin Baral
Hello Listserv: I am requesting your help in interpreting the results of
quadratic terms in multiple regression.

I've hypothesized a curvilinear relationship (inverted U) between a
dependent and an independent variable. To test this hypothesis, I centered
the independent variable, squared it and entered it along with the linear
term in the regression model. I got different results with independent
variables and I have tried to summarize them in the following questions:

1. Is it necessary to have a positive linear term and a negative quadratic
(squared term) to support the curvilinear relationship?

2. Is it necessary to have a significant linear term too? How you interpret
the result when both the linear and quadratic terms are significant compared
to when the quadratic term is significant while the linear term is not?

3. How do you interpret when both the linear and quadratic terms have
negative beta coefficients?

I would greatly appreciate your time and help.

Happy holidays.

Thanking you.
