We seek ecologists studying processes operating at population to global scales, in either terrestrial or marine habitats. Preference will be given to candidates who study plants, invertebrates, and/ or microbes, as well as those whose research builds connections among existing areas of strength both within the EEB Department and between the department and broader UCLA community. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a rigorous, externally funded research program and teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. EEB is a vibrant and expanding department with strengths in evolutionary and conservation genomics, field biology, quantitative biology, and behavior. The Kraft Lab at UCLA seeks a full-time research technician in plant ecology to join our research group. The primary focus of this position will be assisting in ongoing field studies in annual plants aimed at linking functional trait variation to species coexistence at local and landscape scales. Much of this work is conducted at the Sedgwick Reserve near Santa Barbara, CA and the technician would be expected to spend multi-day stretches of time working at the reserve with members of the lab and staying in on-site researcher housing during busy times of the year. We seek someone who is detail oriented, reliable, and enthusiastic about working with a diverse group of annual plants in a beautiful but rustic field setting. This is an ideal position for a recent college graduate seeking to gain research experience before applying to graduate school. The laboratory of Dr. Nathan Kraft in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Los Angeles, seeks a highly motivated candidate for a postdoctoral position in plant community ecology and ecophysiology. The candidate must hold a PhD in Ecology, Botany or related fields at the time the appointment begins. The primary focus of the position will be to participate in an NSF-funded projected exploring the role of functional trait differences in driving species coexistence at a variety of spatial and temporal scales in a serpentine annual plant system in Santa Barbara County, California. The candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with both the Kraft lab as well as the research group of Dr. Jonathan Levine at ETH Zurich in Switzerland. We are seeking a candidate interested in developing physiological-based models of plant competition across resource gradients that can be informed by field data. Successful candidates will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organization ability, and the ability to work well in a diverse, collaborative research group. Desired skills include a background in plant physiology, theoretical ecology and/or field botany. The Ackerly Lab at the University of California, Berkeley is looking for a volunteer field assistant for a project in Amazonian Ecuador from approximately two months beginning in late May or early June 2007. Start and end dates may be flexible to fit the volunteer's schedule. The project is focused on understanding the importance of different ecological processes in maintaining tree species diversity in the Amazon. The primary duties of the volunteer will be collecting data on leaf ecophysiological characters, recording data in the field, drying and weighing samples, and entering data. Compensation: All in- country food, lodging and travel expenses will be covered, including accommodations at the Yasuni Scientific Station. Assistance with travel to/ from Ecuador is available. There is currently no funding available for a stipend. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a background in one or more of the following: ecology, plant physiology, plant systematics, natural history or tropical biology. The volunteer must be willing to work and hike long hours in hot, humid and insect-rich rainforest conditions. Proficiency in english and spanish is desired, as is experience living or working in remote settings. Above all, the volunteer must be flexible, have a healthy sense of humor, and have a strong attention to detail.
