It strikes me that your comments are beginning to sound less like a discussion
of scientific principles and more like a rant against the academic and
regulatory communities. I hope that besides simply venting your frustrations
here, you also support research/scientific efforts which
I don't think you'll have much luck finding radiation data at those spatial and
temporal resolutions.
For observed data, the best resolution that I know of is 32km and only for
North America (http://dss.ucar.edu/pub/narr/). The spatial resolutions of most

Over the past couple of years, I've tinkered with every open source GIS package
I could get my hands on. I've recently started using R regularly and one of my
goals has been to integrate R into whatever GIS workflows I'm using at the
time.
This can be done in ArcGIS via the rpy/rpy2
I did just a small amount of work with MODIS data, and never got around to
writing scripts.
But I found the HDF-EOS to GIS (HEG) tool to be very useful for converting
MODIS data to GeoTIFFs.

I disagree with, what I perceive to be, the sentiment that cities are bad.
Is it not the case that one of the best predictors of diminished ecosystem
integrity is the presence of humans, e.g. roads, resorts, etc.? I would argue
that confining the human footprint to the smallest area possible
environment. And it's FREE!
