JOB DESCRIPTION

Temple University, Philadelphia PA.  Temple University’s Department of 
Geography and Urban Studies 
(GUS) invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor in 
Human-Environment 
Systems beginning in academic year 2019-20.  A Ph.D. in Geography or related 
field is required by the 
start of employment. We are looking for individuals who will excel at 
conducting research and providing 
graduate and undergraduate instruction in an interdisciplinary department.  GUS 
(https://www.cla.temple.edu/geography-and-urban-studies/) offers two 
interdisciplinary undergraduate 
majors in Geography and Urban Studies and Environmental Studies. GUS also 
offers three graduate 
programs - an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Geography and Urban Studies and a 
Professional Science Masters in 
Geographic Information Systems. 

Temple University is a state-related Carnegie Research University (highest 
research activity) located in 
Philadelphia.  The College of Liberal Arts is home to 32 undergraduate majors, 
32 minors, 23 certificate 
programs and 15 graduate degree programs. With its vibrant and diverse array of

importance of the liberal 
arts in society and the principles on which the university was founded.  


QUALIFICATIONS

Competitive candidates should demonstrate expertise in coupled 
human-environment dynamics, 
sustainability science, land use/cover change modeling, urban ecology, 
landscape ecology, or a related 
area of research. We encourage candidates who develop and apply innovative 
quantitative, geographic 
research methods such as artificial intelligence, agent-based modeling, 
cellular automata, spatial 
statistics, spatial data science, social-spatial network analysis, or related 
Geographic Information 
Science methods. Areas of research include, but are not limited to urban 
sustainability, anthropogenic 
and environmental hazards, energy access, use and efficiency, global 
environmental change, 
environmental quality and human health, application of new technologies to 
solving urban environmental 
problems (smart cities), and the adaptation or resilience of urban or rural 
landscapes to climatic 
extremes or other environmental changes.  The successful applicant will 
demonstrate a strong potential 
for funded research and the ability to collaborate with colleagues across 
campus as well as with the 
Center for Sustainable Communities and SAL@T, Spatial Analysis Laboratory at 
Temple, which is a 
university-wide core-facility in health geographics situated in and managed by 
the Department of 
Geography and Urban Studies. We encourage applicants with demonstrated 
experience in research that 
integrates quantitative approaches into the study of complex processes stemming 
from the interaction 
between humans and the environment and with a solid record of collaboration 
with larger 
interdisciplinary groups that include scholars from both the social and 
environmental sciences
