June 16-20, 2013
Bloomington, Indiana

Join fellow researchers and land managers at this conference to discuss basic
and applied ecological research in forests throughout North America. We will
highlight the role of fragmentation in forest ecology and management with
poster and oral presentations across three days. Plenary speakers include:
* Eric Gustafson, US Forest Service - The use of process-based
landscape models for forest management
* Allen Purcell, the Nature Conservancy - White-tailed deer impacts
on forest ecosystems of eastern North America
* Robert Swihart, Purdue University - Wildlife responses to forest
fragmentation; and
* Dan Dey, US Forest Service - Oak ecology and silviculture in the
Central Hardwoods Region.

Within 15 different concurrent sessions, there will be over 120 oral
presentations on a wide array of topics such as:
*             Applied aspen biogeography
* Beyond overabundance: the complex role of ungulates in forest
ecosystems
* Impacts of invasive plant species in the eastern forest
* Natural and silvicultural effects on stand development
* Restoration of threatened and rare woody species
* Restoring forest ecosystems using fire and fire surrogate
approaches
Descriptions of these and all other concurrent sessions can be found on the
conference website (www.nafew.org<http://www.nafew.org>).

Optional day-long field tours include:
* The Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment - a long-term forest and
wildlife management study
* Donaldson's Woods and Pioneer Mothers-old-growth forest remnants
* The Hoosier National Forest - oak ecology and silviculture
* Crane Naval Weapons Support Center - forest management on
military bases
* Marengo Cave - karst geology and ecology
* Indiana University Ecological Research - carbon flux tower and
invasive species.

We have also re-opened submissions for posters. We have poster display stands
and space for up to 100 posters, but poster submissions have been less than
expected. Poster abstracts will be accepted until June 1 (or until all slots
are full), but abstracts received after May 1 may not be printed in the bound
conference proceedings (likely in an addendum, instead). To help you prod
graduate students to submit a poster, we will be having a graduate student
poster competition with prizes for first, second and third (cash or prizes
worth $525)! Posters can still be submitted through the
www.nafew.org<http://www.nafew.org> website.

Hope to see you at NAFEW!
