A research assistant position is available with the Musacchi Group of Fruit Tree Physiology and Orchard Management at Washington State University Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center in Wenatchee, Washington. The research assistant will contribute primarily to investigations in the pollination performance and disease susceptibility of crab apple pollinators towards the reduction of quarantine problems for apple export markets. The assistant will also have the opportunity to contribute as-needed to projects regarding the field management, fruit quality, and consumer preference of apple and pear. The incumbent will perform a wide range of duties including laboratory (DNA/RNA extractions, microscopy, pollen germination and viability assays, fruit quality analysis), field, and greenhouse work. Other required activities include data entry and preparation of graphics and reports. Must demonstrate proficiency in essential computer software (MS Word, Excel and Power Point) and the ability to learn new software. The incumbent must be able to locate and purchase supplies, maintain instruments, schedule and execute activities independently, and demonstrate flexibility in working on different projects, learning new procedures, and developing protocols as required. The incumbent will supervise the activities of hourly workers, and work with other technical staff and scientists to achieve project goals.
