2) Applied Forest Ecology Research Technician (3 positions)
*Location*: Housing at Peck Ranch Conservation Area, work conducted at
Chilton Creek Management Area
*Job category*: full-time, temporary
*Pay rate*: 1) $10.83 per hour (one research assistant) and 2) $9.86 per
hour (three research technicians)
*Duration*: Start date October 24, for 16 non-consecutive 40-hour weeks
(crew can take time off for holidays).

*Description of work*: These positions comprise a four-person team that
is responsible for field research activities and office data entry on a
long-term controlled burn project , Chilton Creek Management Area
(37.069226, -91.058449), maintained by The Nature Conservancy. The
Research Assistant position will serve as the team leader and the
Research Technician positions will serve as team members. Housing is
provided upon availability and a work vehicle is provided for travel to
project sites.
*Description of projects*: The successful candidates will be responsible
for collecting and quality-checking comprehensive over-story and
mid-story data from 250 plots scattered throughout the 2,500-acre study
area. This site has been treated with prescribed fire at varied
intervals since 1998, and data are expected to inform foresters,
wildlife managers, and the public in regards to the effects of long-term
fire management on timber resources and forest structure. Data
collection will include tree measurements, winter twig identification to
species, crown classes, and understory regeneration. The successful
candidates may also have opportunities to assist with additional projects.
These positions provide a great opportunity for gaining professional
field research experience and networking with natural resource managers
and scientists from state, federal, and academic partners.
*Qualifications*: Required qualifications for both positions include 1)
Bachelor’s degree in forestry, ecology, environmental science, natural
resources, or related field, or an Associate’s degree in a
forestry-related field with at least six months of experience collecting
field-based biological inventory data; 2) Good physical condition and
ability to work almost entirely outdoors, in rugged terrain and
inclement weather with potential for biting insects/reptiles; 3)
possession of a valid driver’s license. Preferred qualifications for
both positions include 4) experience or coursework identifying woody
plant species in Missouri or surrounding areas; 5) experience with GPS
or map/compass navigation and Microsoft Office software; 6) demonstrated
qualities of self-motivation, organization, and critical thinking.
