Job announcement (Kiel University) PhD position Deadline: 31.01.2017 The Department of Landscape Ecology at Kiel University successfully acquired funding from the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) for an applied research project about the regulation of common ragwort (Senecio jacobaea L.) by its natural antagonists. For this project we are seeking an outstanding and highly motivated student to work on the three main topics of this project: (i) Evaluating the effectiveness of the introduction of antagonists, e. g. Tyria jacobaea and Longitarsus jacobaeae, in the regulation of common ragwort; (ii) assessment of the potential of additional insect species to regulate common ragwort; (iii) analysing the effects of landscape structure on the occurrence of antagonists in Senecio jacobaeae stands. All research questions aim at broadening the management options of landowners in the face of increasing and spreading populations of Senecio jacobaeae. The position will consist of establishing research sites in Schleswig-Holstein, conducting arthropod sampling and identification, conducting herbivory experiments, digitizing and analysing landscapes, supervising undergraduate students, analysing data and writing papers.
As such, we are looking for candidates with field work experience, strong quantitative skills and a demonstrated ability to write and ideally publish in English. A good knowledge of the German language is essential as the project is part of a general research strategy on Senecio jacobaeae, which involves several German stakeholders, e.g. Stiftung Naturschutz Schleswig-Holstein and Landesamt für Landwirtschaft, Umwelt und ländliche Räume (LLUR) , and field work will take place in Germany. Minimum qualifications required: • Candidates must have obtained their M.Sc. in ecology, biology, environmental science, agricultural science or a related field by the appointment start date • Fluency in German is essential • Statistical and programming skills - preferably in R - are essential • Familiarity with GIS, especially landscape analyses • Demonstrated writing skills in English • Very good identification skills for at least one relevant arthropod group • driving licence class B Additional Qualifications • Familiarity with plant identification and taxonomy The appointment is until February 29th 2020.
