The Department of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Wyoming seeks a PhD student to join a new research program investigating bacterial infections in Bighorn sheep herds. The goal of the project is to compare the sero-prevalence of bacteria associated with reproductive disease, determine biotypes of bacteria associated with respiratory disease, and evaluate the nasal and tonsillar microbiomes of different Bighorn sheep populations in Wyoming. The project will primarily include laboratory work (bacterial culture, DNA extractions, PCR, ELISA, mass spectrometry, and sequencing analyses), and may require fieldwork (collecting blood samples and tonsillar/nasal swabs). Desirable candidates will have some familiarity with molecular techniques, as well as a demonstrated interest in animal disease. Preferable candidates will be inquisitive, have strong communication and problem solving skills, and be able to work independently. The position comprises a graduate assistantship, medical insurance, and tuition waiver. It is available to begin during summer 2018.
