University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Wild Horse Student Assistant
Based in Alturas, CA Working in Lassen, Modoc, and Siskiyou Counties (primarily) Under supervision, this position will provide wild horse research organization and outreach for a team of UC Cooperative Extension Advisors and UC Cooperative Extension Specialists (UC Davis) on wild horses located in Lassen, Modoc and Siskiyou counties. The Wild Horse Student Assistant will assist in communicating and organizing research data on wild horses in Modoc, Lassen, and Siskiyou counties and provide a variety of duties associated with talking to stakeholders, interacting with collaborating agencies, and creating outreach materials. This position will also be expected to perform other duties, as needed, including field research, photography, and wild horse health checks. The ability to work in remote, harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, and interact well with a variety of people is required. Responsibilities * Organizing current research efforts, up to date census information, and research data * Talking to stakeholders, interacting with collaborating agencies, and creating outreach materials * Field monitoring, photography, and other duties as assigned Job Requirements and Preferences * Recently completed (last 12 months) or pursuing Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences, such as Range Management, Natural Resources Management, Equine Management, Agriculture, or a related subject * Experience with wild or domestic horses, ranching, and/or public land management * Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher) * Experience taking pictures and creating posters, presentations, and flyers for outreach * Excellent organizational skills * Ability to work productively and communicate as part of a team, as well as independently under general direction to accomplish team goals * Ability to read, interpret and navigate using topographic maps to locate wild horses in remote rangeland settings and collecting coordinates with hand-held GPS units * Valid, state-issued driver's license and clean driving record and experience operating 4WD vehicles and ATVs on paved and unpaved roads, often in narrow or rocky areas Job Details * Position is based on an approximately 40 hour week with irregular work hours and schedule * Preferred starting date May 14 through August 17 (dates flexible) * This is an hourly paid internship ($13.23 per hour minimum) * Possible shared summer housing available (~$180/month) To Apply Go to: http://ucanr.edu/Jobs/Jobs_990/?jobnum=1332 by March 2, 2018 For questions please contact Laura Snell at lksn...@ucanr.edu<mailto:lksn...@ucanr.edu> UC ANR is an equal opportunity provider and employer
