Hello Dr. Carlson,

How soon do you need that data? Do you need only recent information or temporal
data? 2016 NLCD will be released in Dec 2018. Other than that newest data is
2011 NLCD. As far as I remembe, NLCD data is not very big that most of
computers should handle it. Unless, it is very old. U.S. has 3007 counties.
Check this link for US county shapefile
https://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/cbf/cbf_counties.html . All you need
to do is use raster calculator tool and zonal statistics tool (or tools
equivalent in qgis). QGIS is free software and it has loads of tool like ESRI
ArcMAP has.

Our statistics highlight trends in household and family composition, describe
characteristics of the residents of housing units, and show how they are
related.

If you have access to ArcMAP, I can help you. Or if I get time, I can generate
it for you but I am busy at the moment.

I hope it helps.

Subject: [ECOLOG-L] County level land use/cover data

Hello,

I have an analysis to perform that would require data on land use or land cover
from each US county, in some kind of spreadsheet format. I'm particularly
wanting to know the proportion of land or total land area in each county that
is either in agriculture or developed/urban/residential. Does anyone know if
such a dataset exists?

Alternatively, could anyone help me generate such a dataset? It appears to not
be particularly complicated to derive from NLCD raster datasets a new layer
with developed/agricultural vs. "natural" land and to calculate the
proportion/mean of these on the basis of a county polygon layer. However, I
have limited GIS skills, and I am only equipped with open source GIS and
computers that seem unable to handle the memory demands of nationwide raster
datasets.

Thank you for any help you can offer!

Brad
