CFP and Paper Competition - Feminist Geography Conference (June 15th-17th 2022):

Call For Papers - Feminist Economic Geography: Understanding the Future of Work

Daniel Cockayne (University of Waterloo), Lia Frederiksen (University of
British Columbia), Emily Reid Musson (Memorial University), Nancy Worth
(University of Waterloo)

This conference theme will include a panel and several paper sessions,
highlighting feminist geography interventions in debates about the future of
work.

Feminist economic geography emphasizes difference, embodiment, and conceives of
workplaces as dynamic, uneven, and untidy spaces, an emphasis which can help
recenter discussions about the future of work on workers and their experience
of work (Reid-Musson et. al 2020). Indeed, though it is certain that the future
of work will be increasingly digitally and technologically mediated, it remains
unclear precisely what this means for workers, especially in the context of the
(re)production of gendered, sexualized, and racialized forms of difference.
What this means for the colonial state's relationship with the economy and for
migrant workers too remains unclear (Mullings, 2021; Werner, 2011). An
empirically-grounded and worker-focussed perspective is essential if we are to
adequately understand global trends.

This theme of this session is organized around three critical questions: Who
are the subjects of the future of work? What counts as work? And where should
we look?

Paper sessions will be flipped. This means they will include pre-recorded talks
of up to 15 minutes, with the live session featuring a chaired discussion
amongst presenters and attendees.

Possible paper themes could include but are not limited to:

  * Feminist approaches to the future of work
  * The future of care and social reproduction
  * The home as a space of work
  * Feminist, queer, and anti-racist conceptualizations of futurity and
(economic) futures
  *   Logistics and finance
  *   Diverse economies
  * Work and workplaces after COVID-19
  * The international division of labor in transition
  * Gig work, automation, and reproductive technologies
  *   Informal economies
  * Homocapitalism, queer economic geography, and queering social reproduction
  *   Xenofeminist economic geographies
  *   Racial capitalism

We welcome contributions on feminist economic geography, particularly those
with a focus on work (whether paid or unpaid, formal or informal, waged or
salaried, as production or as social reproduction, etc.) and workplaces, and/or
on the future of work. We particularly welcome graduate students and other
early career scholars to submit abstracts, including unfinished works that
they're looking for feedback on.

Please submit your abstract for a pre-recorded individual paper via the website

the Future of Work.
