Clemson University’s City Planning and Real Estate Development department (CPRED) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member to begin an appointment in August 2020. We anticipate hiring at the Assistant Professor level. Teaching will primarily be in the department’s Master of City and Regional Planning program (MCRP), although the candidate will have the opportunity to teach at the undergraduate level and in the college’s Planning, Design and the Built Environment doctoral program. Teaching responsibilities are commensurate with those of a research-oriented program.
Clemson’s MCRP program was founded in 1968 and is ranked by Planetizen as one of the nation’s top ten suburban city planning programs. Clemson University is a Carnegie Foundation-classified Doctoral-Highest Research Activity (R1) institution, and the university offers many opportunities for transdisciplinary collaboration. The university is located in the center of the Piedmont Atlantic Megaregion (PAM), one of the fastest growing regions in the country, and one that hosts one of the busiest airports in the world – Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson Airport. The PAM stretches from Birmingham, AL to Raleigh-Durham, NC, roughly following the I-85 corridor, encompassing very large urban agglomerations such as Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC, as well as vibrant small-town and rural economies such as the 10 Upstate South Carolina counties The state and regional bodies have invested in innovative logistical infrastructures such as an inland port in nearby Greer, South Carolina that imports and exports large amounts of goods throughout the world through a rural international port of entry. The physical and virtual infrastructures connecting the region to global developments can be seen in the rapidly growing immigrant communities of the region and the equally rapid globalization of its property markets through foreign direct investment in residential and commercial real estate. In doing so, the Upstate has transitioned away from traditional textiles to high tech textiles and the automotive industry, successfully redeveloping many of the region’s mill towns and revitalizing Greenville in a progressive fashion. Additionally, the Upstate is located along a chain of lakes and in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, which offer many outdoor recreational opportunities. Clemson is situated in the Greenville, SC metropolitan area, which is widely recognized as one of the nation’s most attractive, dynamic, best-planned, and livable small-to-mid-sized cities. Asheville, NC; Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC; and Charleston, SC and the South Carolina coast are all within easy driving distance. Qualifications The City and Regional Planning (CRP) Program at Clemson is planning, over the next few years, to further build its community engagement in diverse communities, contribute to the GIS capacity in the department, and make connections to a growing focus on health issues that the College of Architecture, Arts, and Humanities (CAAH). Additionally, the program is in the process of developing a strong pipeline with the undergraduate student body at Clemson. While we will consider qualified candidates in any specialization related to city planning, we are especially interested in candidates who can play a central role in the growth of the department along one or more of the above lines. The ideal candidate will have a strong research agenda, exhibit the promise to be a successful teacher, show a potential to raise external funding, and have a dedication to diversity, inclusivity and excellence in higher education. The candidate should have a PhD in city planning or a closely related field by the time of the appointment.
