Harald, I do believe that this issue is with the packaging and *not*
with the upstream program. The marble-qt package, which is a variant
of the marble package built without KDE dependencies, does not create
a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications.
As the marble package does not share this
The qtonly binary has a different name so one desktop file would not
work for both binaries, which makes it an upstream issue as they simply
have no desktop file that would work with the qtonly marble build.
