Open terminal and install:
sudo apt-get install freeplane
or in synaptic
Step 3:
Install:

build 7) using Apache Ant, version:

ANT build binary package created after execute the following command at
root of Freemind source folder:

Use Freeplane instead of Freemind (I had to switch from Freemind to
Freeplane in Ubuntu 16.04, and I like Freeplane better; it is more up-
to-date and it reads all the mind-maps I initially created in Freemind):
