I'm sorry we do not have the power to do such thing. Those datas are
now inside a lot of computers worldwide, under a lot different
legislation. They even are now on web archives which has been acceded
by a lot of unknown people.

Please consider this as a security breach and take appropriate mesures
on your side to secure your system. (i.e. mesures that would turn those
leaked datas useless).

This page is somewhat a "helper" : you can try the button on it, see the
actual result of the code you'll past. We can't do it in the wiki. I
find it more convenient to have the ability to test it.

Yes. This is generally referred as the "freedom 0" by Richard Stallman,
the creator of this license.

This page explain the philosophy of the GPL in common words:
https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html
"The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
../..
“Free software” does not mean “noncommercial”. A free program must be
available for commercial use, commercial development, and commercial
distribution."

Side note : people in general start counting from 1, but in the computer
field people have the habit to start from 0.

You also can make money with Ekiga itself, but in this case you need to
comply to some rules explained in the GPL. The purpose of those rules is
to protect the freedom of all users of Ekiga, including their freedom to
use it for commercial purpose.

The whole purpose of the GPL is to prevent anyone to mess with what
you're doing with Ekiga as a user, your activity being commercial or
not. That's the reason why the GPL do not talk much about the usage of
the software. Simply put, the more a license speaks about the usage of
the software, the more you are restricted as a user.

Yes, you can. In fact this licence grant you the right to use this
software for any purpose.

Here is the license :
https://git.gnome.org/browse/ekiga/tree/COPYING?id=EKIGA_4_0_1

The interesting part for you is :
"Activities other than copying, distribution and modification are not
covered by this License; they are outside its scope. The act of
running the Program is not restricted, and the output from the Program
is covered only if its contents constitute a work based on the
Program (independent of having been made by running the Program).
Whether that is true depends on what the Program does."

Any software using the SIP protocol will do, no matter if endorsed by
diamondcard.us.

But please consider you are then using 2 thing : the ekiga software and
a service provided by diamondcard. You should check if diamondcard is
suitable for your activity. Ekiga and diamondcard are not directly
related.

I assume he was referring to a SIP proxy, i.e. the commercial SIP
provider provide a proxy to relay the communications (audio, video, i.e.
the RTP steams). In this case it is not end-to-end anymore, but it is
part of the SIP specification. This can solve the NAT issue.

The solution to avoid having a commercial provider and solve the NAT
issue is something like the p2psip effort:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P2psip
http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/p2psip/current/maillist.html

Beside, we could improve the ekiga tools for supporting NAT with an ICE
implementation:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactive_Connectivity_Establishment
Even if it will cover most cases and improve Ekiga, ICE will probably
not be enough without a proxy somewhere, which p2psip try to implement
directly in all clients.

And I doubt IPV6 will solve this issue, as it will probably remains bad
habits from some people to put NAT, justifying it by "security", even if
the specification try explicitly to avoid NATs. Still IPv6 will
certainly help a lot.

Yannick

In one hand, this seems a fun way to hack a bit of hardware to get the
fax feature. In the other hand, the Opal stack of ekiga has support for
fax and some software hacking could provide full software support for
fax in Ekiga.

Btw, thank you for this tutorial.

Ref. http://www.opalvoip.org/wiki/index.php?n=Main.FaxSupport

In the table "Connecting a fax to the internet" provided in the link
above, the use case here seems to be raw PCM/Audio RTP + connecting an
hardware fax to the audio output of the PC and the serial port.

If I remember correctly, there is an option, probably the disable-gconf
one, to store the configuration of Ekiga in one single file. AFAIK this
work was done for the windows port which lacks gconf, by Snark. I do not
know if you can use it under GNU/Linux.

Yes, Ekiga is able to place PC-to-phone calls.

There is a provider built-in (diamoncard) or you can use your own.

There is a small list of tested providers in our wiki here (quite
outdated):
http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/List_of_PC_to_phone_providers

PC-to-phone calls is an essential part of the SIP protocol used by Ekiga
(and this is true for H.323 as well, still the H.323 protocol is
nowadays replaced by the SIP protocol)

There is tons of company providing the PC-to-phone service using the SIP
protocol at low rates.

AFAIK the video codec used in the test call is the worst available i.e.
H.261. This explains the low resolution and the big pixels.

Practically the test call shows if video works, it does not show how
good it can be.

In a call with another client supporting better codec (especially H.264)
the video is much better. You can force ekiga to negotiate only with the
best codec (e.g H.264, or H.263) by deselecting other codecs in
preferences, or put the codec you wish in the top of the list.
Unfortunately the test call will only accept H.261.

Hi,

Here is a quick review I made about people building Ekiga for various
systems :

Building from sources (of course you have instructions in our wiki...) :

* Linux from scratch:

Binaries: (Warning: I've no clue how good those packages are...)

* OpenSuse

* Mageia & Fedora

I've read the whole thread, and the technical question is not a hard

service, cost, interoperability etc. is a whole new thing for us and not
a minor task as putting an ad on the web site is.

Indeed, and this is a bug. It only appears on the home page. I choose to
not fix it because it would involve either hacking drupal core (which
adds line 12 on the home page) or a module of drupal (which adds line 8
to all pages), but I do not have much spare time and I need to ease the
maintenance, i.e. rely on easy updates. My bad.

The best solution will be an official fix for the module. The bug report
is here: http://drupal.org/node/884746

There is no SIP protocol in this, thus we cannot understand where the
issue is.

Your issue, having audio going only in one way, _seems_ related to NAT
issue...

Try to remove some codecs, like audio G726, CELT etc. until the PDU rich

This is documented in the Empathy FAQ:
http://live.gnome.org/Empathy/FAQ#My_Ekiga_account_doesn.27t_work.
"My Ekiga account doesn't work.
This is a problem in the ekiga.net server. Unfortunately this can't be
fixed in Telepathy because it will break the compatibility with other
SIP servers."

AFAIK, this is indeed an issue with the server configuration, but as
Ekiga use another mecanism for client behind a NAT and as it works with
other servers and is an IETF standard (STUN), you could as well ask
Empathy devs to add this feature in their client. On our side we cannot
fix it in a short time as our server administrator is not available at
the moment...

Sorry for the inconvenience. Empathy should work if not behind a NAT
with our server.

Yannick

I know. We plan to release Ekiga 3.2.7 soon. My plan for the website is
to fix everything at the time we will announce it. For now the windows
version is a *pre-release*; as it fix the very bad bug which could erase
user personal datas, it is good enough to be public now.

I do think the less you give the *masses* updates, the more valuable it
is to them. It is quite différent for people having special interest on
our project; for them the more updates, the better. I do use channel of
communication with feedback, like bug reports, the mailing list, forums
etc. and provide them repositories with updated clients in a pre-release
state. This is my personal strategy. As I also am the one dealing with
the website, I find useful to discuss it publicly here. And I just tried
to express it now. I was just doing it before.

You're right to ping us... I've put a new link on the donwload page.

Eugen, I had to change to the new version up on your web, is it the
release for windows, or do you plan to upgrade it?

Thus Michal, this link might change, but AFAIK it is usable and better
than the previous one.

For the explanation you can find it in this mailing list. I plan to make
an annoucement on Ekiga.org but this will take time. I also have to
change the donwload button on the front page, but as the code is quite
dirty there, it will take a bit of time. But I would like to have this
button and the annouce ready at the same time.

In the meantime, you can use the download page:

The fix is for call failure or calls working just one way. Audio issue
is more probably bad interaction between Ekiga and Pulse Audio.

OPAL is an Ekiga dependency.

Among other libraries, Ekiga use mainly PTLIB and OPAL.
PTLIB basically offer the hardware management part, while OPAL basically
offers protocols (like H323, SIP) and codecs (like speex, H261,...).
The website for PTLIB and OPAL is here: http://www.opalvoip.org/

Ekiga is build on them. You already have OPAL installed. The version I
propose is the same as the one you have already + a small patch for
better NAT traversal support of the audio and video streams.

You just have to install as I told in the first message, it should just
replace the existing OPAL. Then use Ekiga as usual. (There is no need to
change the Ekiga package, the patch is small and it is binary
compatible)

[Ekiga-list] Fedora 12 testing packages for NAT traversal support

2010-04-24 Thread yannick
Hi,

Chipper did binary packages for Fedora 12 including the NAT traversal
patch (add STUN support for the audio and video streams).

Please test them and report here:
http://ekiga.net/yannick/f12/

(You just need to install opal-3.6.6-1.1.fc12.i686.rpm if your using the
32 bits version of Fedora, or opal-3.6.6-1.1.fc12.x86_64.rpm if you're
using the 64 bits version)

Many thanks to Chipper.

Best regards,
Yannick

Hi,

I did a test using a fresh installation of Ubuntu 9.10 (with virtualbox)
and my own packages ( https://launchpad.net/~sevmek/+archive/ppa ).

The results are:
I can register to ekiga.NET and place a call to 5...@ekiga.net with audio
and video.
The user is *not* part of any groups like audio/video/voice. Thus, AFAIK
this issue is not relevent using a fresh Ubuntu 9.10 installation.

Still, in my own setup (ubuntu 9.10, but upgraded from version to
version since a long time now) my user is part of the groups audio and
video. I do not remember if I did this and why...

Thus, maybe this issue is maybe the result of an old behavior in Ubuntu
(and maybe Debian).

Could you please tell us what are the distros you are using and when you
installed it (using which version)?

Best regards,
Yannick

I'm not 100% sure, but my guess is:

Upgrade to Ekiga 3.2.6 should fix this.

Why?
In the log you provided, the issue seems (after a quick look):
2010/04/14 10:07:21.826 0:24.369 Media Patch:0xb4f16b90

GMAudioInputManager_nullOpening Device SILENT (Ekiga/Ekiga)

The sound device is set to "SILENT", which just means... what it means!

In Ekiga 3.2.6 there is this fix:
"Make sure the output device is set before a call"

Use this command "aptitude show libopal3.6.6" to perform a check against
the version; it must have "~nat" in its name to be sure it is the
patched version.

e.g. on my system:

$ aptitude show libopal3.6.6
Paquet : libopal3.6.6

Automatiquement installé: oui
Version : 3.6.6~ppa~karmic2~nat

Hi,

It is always good for us to know our software gives good results. Thank
you for the feedback.

At the moment we are testing a patch which should improve connectivity
when Ekiga is behind a NAT (technicaly it fix STUN support to the RTP
streams -i.e. the audio and video streams-)

You can find it for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic here:
https://launchpad.net/~sevmek/+archive/ppa
(it is Ekiga 3.2.6+the patch)

I will most probably build it for Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 and the incoming
Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 in 1 week or 2.

Reports about this patch are positives for now. It is includuded in the
dev branch of OPAL, and if the testing continue to give good results it
will most likely be included in the next Ekiga release.

The patch itself is small, apply only to OPAL and is binary compatible
with Ekiga 3.2.6, which means you can patch OPAL yourself if you have
Ekiga 3.2.6 already and it should work with just patching/rebuilding
OPAL.

Best regards,
Yannick

Hi,

That's very nice of you :) Speaking about credits, Damien Sandras did a
lot to 3.2.6, and Julien Puydt too (Snark), and Eugen Dedu. Lots of the
work also happen in the OPAL/PTLIB library. Specifically, the last patch
was contributed by one of the main contributor to OPAL trunk (Robert)
all based on a report issued by an Ubuntu user on launchpad; whitout his
valuable report and his pugnacity the patch would not be here (see:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ekiga/+bug/517580 ). Eugen
managed to get it into OPAL for Ubuntu. I just used the patch into my
previous package of 3.2.6 which is not really high tech if you compare
to other people mentionned (mostly copy'n paste). Personnaly I would
congrats the whole team for your good experience. IMHO this is just
another exemple of community based developement.

We are now testing this patch at a moderate scale, before going to the
large scale if everything goes well.

Yannick

Here.

Yup, Ekiga uses UDP only. Then range 5060 to 5065 is IMHO enough for
direct access, or more generally 5000 to 5100 (UDP only)

You can test ekiga 3.2.6 for karmic with the patch here:

I do no used "ekiga-released" as I consider it as official and I do not
want to confuse users of it with some testing.

I had chats lasting hours using the GNU/Linux version with the windows
version at the other end. It is not that broken. If I remember correctly
there was such issue sometimes, but if the other end give a try it
works. It was with 3.2.5 on the windows side...

This is not really helpfull Damien. The user claims Ekiga fails to call
500 where twinkle works, we need to understand how, at least, don't you
think?

kapetr, I'm sorry but in short I agree with Damien: it does work. But
not for all "common ((port)restricted) NAT". e.g. It works for Eugen
behind a "port restricted NAT", but not work for you.

There is no such beast as a "common ((port)restricted) NAT"; the classic
NAT classification failed, and the STUN mechanism, understood as "a
complete solution to the NAT traversal problem", is now deprecated.
Further information about this here:
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5389#section-2

Fact is, NAT routers designers failed to get a common agreement about
NAT traversal (if they ever intented to get to such goal). NAT routers
is just a jungle; they just do as it pleases them and enough of them do
not pay attention to a universal NAT traversal solution.

How does ekiga work in case of "port restricted NAT"?

As you noticed, the signaling part of the protocol (SIP) use some new
ports it gets from the STUN server. Thus you can register to ekiga.net
and try to place a call.

Your issue is with the audio and video streams; once the call is placed
you do not get audio or video back as your router just refuse inbound
connection using "classic" ports, i.e. in the range 5060-5100.

In your case, Ekiga use a technique often referred as "hole punching".
e.g. see here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UDP_hole_punching
In your bug report here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ekiga/+bug/517580
in the wireshark log, events number 57 to 60 are "hole punching" (ekiga
tries to use 4 ports for audio+video streams, 1 for audio, 1 for video
and 2 more additional for statistics about those streams like packet
order, packet late etc.)

In the view of the classical classification of NATs, this technique
should work because "An external host (hAddr:hPort) can send packets to
iAddr:iPort [i means internal or local] by sending packets to
eAddr:ePort [e means external or remote] only if iAddr:iPort had
previously sent a packet to hAddr:hPort." as you can read here for
"Port-Restricted cone NAT":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation#Types_of_NAT

But we can take for granted that in your case, there is some additional
rules in your NAT router that forbid using some ports, like the ones
ekiga tries to use for audio and video streams, even if it tries first
"hole punching". For some other people, like Eugen, "hole punching" does
work.

As I told before, the classical NAT classification is just wrong when
applied universally.

I hope this will help you understand why such assumption like "NOBODY
behind NAT can use Ekiga", as you wrote in your bug report for Ubuntu,
is just wrong. It does work for most people behind a NAT if you agree
the classical NAT classification, not being universally right, is also
not completely wrong and most probably right in most cases, as lots of
valuable people defined it, and as some Ekiga users behind NATs can rely
on it.

Make no mistake, the new way of dealing with NAT: ICE
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactive_Connectivity_Establishment is
just another more complex workaround for this bad situation and
ultimately recommend using a proxy to establish end-to-end
communication.

Finally, as I asked on the bug report, could you provide a wireshark log
in the report using twinkle to see how it deals in your case?

Best regards,
Yannick

This is not a proof. What you saw is your computer deleting your files,
not ekiga. e.g. some viruses add themselves to various binaries and do
actions when this binary is used.

The windows binary is cross compiled from a GNU/Linux platform; this
process is quit safe against viruses. Some days ago, people did a check
against the binary for viruses and they did not find anything. The
website ekiga.org is pointing to the right binary as Eugen stated.

I'll try to reproduce your issue, but be aware again: it is not because
you are using some software when something bad happen that it is a proof

[Ekiga-list] Automatic Network Detection is broken atm (STUN server is down)

2010-02-06 Thread yannick
Hi,

One of our service is down atm: the STUN server.

If you have a new warning about port forwarding, here is a quick fix:
$ gconftool-2 -s /apps/ekiga/general/nat/stun_server stun.ideasip.com
--type=string

(in 1 line)
This will switch the STUN server to another one.
Here is a list of public STUN servers:
http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/STUN

To revert back to the default setting use this line:
$ gconftool-2 -s /apps/ekiga/general/nat/stun_server stun.ekiga.net
--type=string

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Best regards,
Yannick

It is the intended link:
http://wwwuser.gwdg.de/~mrickma/ekiga/stable/ekiga-setup-3.2.6-release.exe

This place is own by the guy who released the windows version: Mickael
Rickman.

I understand this might be confusing as it is not in the ekiga.net
domain.

Damien, what you think? Should we copy it on ekiga.net ?

Hi,

This is not possible. Still a lot of efforts has been put in the code to
separate the GUI from the engine, AFAIK it will require more work on the
code to have a console version of Ekiga. In other words, the basis for
that feature are there.

Hi,

It seems you need a commercial service; we do not provide this kind of
service ourselves. Ekiga, based on the SIP standard, can use many
commercial SIP providers. A search engine is your friend.

[Ekiga-list] Ekiga.org is now powered by Drupal.

2010-01-20 Thread yannick

In a continuous effort to improve our work flow and our communication
with you, the users of Ekiga, we decided sometimes ago to move our main
website, Ekiga.org, to a modern Content Management System.

This is a reality: Ekiga.org is now powered by Drupal.
http://drupal.org/

We choose Drupal as it focus on flexibility, security and is community
oriented. We hope to deliver more news and bring more features soon. As
of now, we improved the download section (especially for the windows
binary) and added a roadmap to the project. The design as been polished
too, while still being familiar. We hope you like it!

Future website work will focus on wiki integration and migration of
Ekiga.net to Drupal.

Best regards,
The Ekiga team.

Your comparison is not right:
Your email client do not support the "presence" feature.
By definition, presence means you must inform your contacts about your
status.

I see 3 possibilities about this regarding privacy:
- you turn off presence (e.g. setting it to "offline" in Ekiga, but this
is not available yet). It should be possible to add this feature for a
low coding cost... I consider implicit for the user to understand, if
"offline" is available in the client, other presence's possibilities are
not privacy safe.
- Adding more features for privacy:
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-simple-simple-05#section-2.3
But this is not simple work to implement it and it involves hard work on
client, server and usability.
- You get rid off the central server and use a new protocol based on
peer-to-peer. There is no standard yet for this, but an effort is going
on this: http://www.p2psip.org/ This is even more work...

Yannick

Well, I'm using Ubuntu since long now, and for *me*, 9.10 is the worst
experience ever with this distro. Please, do not take for granted Ubuntu
is getting worst, it is just my own experience...

I've 2 computers running it; 1 "netbook" which was unusable with it
("MSI wind": no USB support at all and a bad luminosity flickering all
time) and a desktop with garbage sound in all applications like you
(based on an Asus A8N-E motherboard). Both computers were working fine
with the previous Ubuntu.

In both cases I tried to:
1- find relevant bug in launchpad (the ubuntu bug tracking system) and
2- take the latest updates for critical components of the system
involved in the bug)

e.g. you could try this PPA which contains latest pulseaudio release:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/ppa
It helped in my case, even if still not perfect.

You could also try to allow the "karmic-proposed" repository, it has an
updated kernel.

As a side note, the good news for Ubuntu users is the incoming release
(10.04 LTS) will be based on Debian (I mean they will stick close to it
this time); thus the overall quality will probably be better...

Yannick

The inconsistency in documentation is my bad; I'll fix that ASAP

AFAIK, lopal_d is the debug version of OPAL. Question is why Ekiga is
searching for the the debug version of opal? Is it because of your
ekiga's configure?

The documentation part, which is now in the wiki, will be reworked as
part of the wiki move to drupal. But it is a huge work I will do after
the Ekiga.net move to Drupal. Unfortunately, none of the core team use
Fedora/Red Hat, thus it is very hard for us to document it... If you
want, you can document this part; ask me and i'll grant you access to
the wiki.

The plan is to move the wiki inside Drupal; this will fix the navigation
issue. It might happen even sooner than I first though...

Distro support is quite hard to achieve. I probably could code something
to get automatically the version of Ekiga available in the main distros.
But for an accurate view of available version outside the main
repositories we will need a contributor for each distro. Please contact
us if you want to give us relevant informations about a distro (any
distro; I speak about "main" distro when I think doing the support
myself but "main" is not much important, it just mean "less work for
me").

Actually 3 members of the team deals with packaging our latest version
for Debian, Ubuntu and windows. You probably do not use one of them; the
green button on the main page automatically detect if you use one of
them (you need javascript enabled in your browser) and present the
visitor a direct link to the relevant information for debian or ubuntu
or windows. For now it is hand written and I plan to have an
administrator interface in Drupal for this feature.

Snapshot is IMHO more important than you think. We need tests and
testers. The more snapshots are tested, the best a release will be. I do
not plan to move it deeper.

Yannick

I agree the idea of being more synthetic about the changes in Ekiga,
especially between majors versions. Its is the point with the scheme
numbering of Ekiga version and the website should reflect that.

It might seems quite simple to do, but it is not. The work of just
writing the changelog from one version to another, even if minor, is
quite time consuming and we are somewhat weak in term of people working
on the project. I must deal in one hand with the people working on the
project and there my goal is to ease the process, in the other hand with
our users needs where your idea seems quite good to me. But with the
actual situation of the software we are using (the current drupal
installation) this would mean even more work for our contributors
because this will require hand-writing it, and I doubt this will work
nicely on the long run.

The situation is not dark, as drupal is like a big framework with a lot
of possibilities, but IMHO its weakness is not dealing well with
"features". e.g. it should not be hard to write the necessary code to
get a revision software handler just like you designed it but drupal do
not provide it "out-of-the-box". I've dig up the question and I thing
using the drupal's modules taxonomy, views and features would help. It
will need some coding time but probably not too long. Unfortunately,
there is other tasks requiring love and being to my eyes more important,
i.e. ekiga.net improvements. I'll do that when I find the time, or if
someone wants to jump in he will be welcome. I will put it on the public
roadmap to do some advertising around it.

I will do something like that for ekiga.net as part of my work on it.
Damien will work on upgrading the software running the server there, we
will see if there is a tool already designated for monitoring it I can
use for the website or if I will need to write it. Still as quality
assurance around ekiga.net is one of our concerns, we will find a
solution soon I think.

Yannick

[Ekiga-list] BETA test for a new Ekiga.org WebSite

2009-10-28 Thread yannick
Hi,

We decided to improve our Website for Ekiga. It was hard to
manage/update for the Ekiga team and it was not as clear as our visitors
expected it.

We now reached the point were our new website can be more widely tested.

For the visitor, we focused on improving the download experience,
explain what Ekiga is more friendly for non-technophiles and added a
Roadmap for those asking about the future of Ekiga.

The new infrastructure behind the website, which is based on the well
know open source Drupal framework, will allow us to update the content
or the theme of the website much more easily.

Please, visit the new website and provide us feedback before we go
public. We want to provide the best experience possible.

BETA Ekiga.org:
http://ekiga.net/yannick/drupal-6.14/

Best regards,
On behalf of the Ekiga team,
Yannick

You can use precompiled binaries for Windows (3.2.6):

I'm working on fixing our website to make them more visible...

Try to add video codecs 1 by 1 until you reach the threshold.
Theora is good for communication with other linux users, H263_1998 is
good with windows SIP clients interoperability. H261 is not really
interesting except for testing with our echo test (it is the worst video
quality in our codecs).

Sorry for the inconvenience.

AFAIK ARCH Linux ships will many codecs and Ekiga has a bad bug when too
many codecs are enbled.

Try to disable all video codecs but H261, and try to call the echo test
again.

Good job eugen! I will port those packages to Ubuntu after I finished
the work on Ekiga.org (and before starting working on ekiga.net, as I
consider testing a high priority).

After releasing those packages for Ubuntu, I will test the issue with
events on transfer.

What happen if you try to place the call using not a number, but
somthing close to the form of an email:
do not try sip:1999
try: sip:1...@yourprovider (your provider is what you entered in the
account window, under the field registrar)
