This weekend, Jan 14th, is the North American CW QSO
Party. As usual, all 50 states and other American
Territories will be on. A great time to fill in those
missing states and have a ball of fun. 12 hours (you
can work 10. Check the rules at ncjweb dot com)..
Starts Saturday at 1800 UTC. 160 thr
Stephanie,
Outstanding! I always love to hear someone who has
made that 1st CW contact and is ready for more. At
age 15 I made my 1st CW QSO. That was almost 50 years
ago. I've never tired of CW. In fact I usually have
to hunt down my Heil headset for a SSB contest. I've

Rick,
Yes, the soldering is a good place to start.
A few simple things - did you forget to install C6 on the bottom of the

I'm going to try to join all of you on the 40 meter net. 20 meters would be
better I believe, but my KAT2 isn't finished yet. I'm antenna-challenged at
the moment. I'll be using a temporary 40 meter dipole I have strung around
my den. If successful, this will be my first QSO with my new K2 (S/N 524

Hello All-
Just installing the KBT2 battery. The first time I tried the battery
arced and became too
hot to touch for about half an hour.
Just tried again and there was no arc, but the battery started to get
warm so I pulled it
out of the bracket. The battery is not connected in any way, a

That's great news Harry!
Just one small correction:
I thank Stephanie VA3UXB for his suggestions on component values.
That's "her suggestions" - I'm a YL, not an OM ;-)

I'm guessing you could order 2 * E560002 if you really wanted.
For what it's worth, most recent E560002 "1N4148" diodes seem to be

Harry,
Thanks for your 10/12 meter modification details. (And thank you, too,
Stephanie!)
Given your success on these bands, there's the possibility of a future
KFL1-4H option ("H" for "high bands"): a version of the 4-band K1
module that covers some combination of 10, 12, 15, 17, and 20 met
Hi, all.
I built my KFL1-2 as a 12m/10m board.
I thank Stephanie VA3UXB for his suggestions on component values.
Values of components I used are as follows:
Band 1: 24.8MHz
C1, C5 - 100
C2, C4 - 47
C3 - 1
C11, C15 - 270
C12, C14 - 33
C13 - 2

Thank you for the kind words.

John,
If you are on PTT and have the PTT pressed then the voltage on U4 pin 3 will be
< 0.6v.
If the voltage on U2 pin 2 is around 2.2v then when VOX operation is selected
then PIC U1 measures this voltage from the COMP OUT signal on U1 pin 3 and
commands the DAC U2 to output a similar voltag

I am aware of the ALC upgrade mod for the KSB2 dated Sept 2001, see

Remeasured. Between pins 2 and 3 I get 3.6v. But, if I press and release the
PTT, it goes to .8v. It remains at .8v regardless of SSBA setting.

John,
Please re-measure the voltagesBETWEEN pins 2 and 3 on U4.
If it is still 3.1v then you have really got problems, and the VOX should not
work at all.

Stewart and Don and anyone else -
I've gotten back to trying to fix my VOX. It seems that with any microphone the
VOX wants to key the radio until shut off. Sometimes right away, sometimes
after a bit. Disconnecting the microphone doesn't help. PTT works fine.

Hi
I use 14 volts times the current delivered to calculate the wattage of a
panel. The open circuit voltage is only useful to get an idea of how much
overhead you have and is determined by the number of cells in series. Each
cell will produce about .5 volts at a current determined by the size o
Hi all,
Just built a KX1, everything checks out fine but occasionally I'll reach for

then stops. Unless I switch bands or power cycle the
