I've become extremely fond of the Rollabind / Circa (Levenger) / Arc (Staples) systems. The only real investment is the punch; the discs themselves are cheap, and you can either buy nice binders or make your own. Traditional three-ring binder components can be used just by re-punching them for use with the discs. The Levenger lever punch is a bit spendy, but it'll punch through cardboard, so you can make binders for any size/shape you like.
