Another data point from the all-K3 FD station W1LY (2A RI). The 3 Yagi
antennas in the photo (link below) were all on the 20m band simultaneously
for at least 4 hours at the beginning of FD. 1 station was on 20 CW, and 2
stations were on 20 SSB. All running 100 Watts. Another K3 was used in the

As another data point in this discussion...
I operate 100% CW with my K3, which is equipped with 200, 500, 1000, and
2.7KHz filters.
During FD 2010 I made 400+ CW QSO's during my two 4 hour operating shifts.
The great majority of that operating time was spent with the DSP bandwidth
at 600-700 Hz
And do remember, more compression brings up background noise between
words by the amount of the compression value. Hence with 10 dB of
compression, a background noise level that would normally produce and
output of 1 watt will then sound like 10 watts of noise.

I went this route a couple months ago on my K3. The Alco knobs
do look spiffy, although they protrude slightly further out from
the front panel. After a while I went back to the factory knobs
on the inner shafts. Why? Because the stock knobs are far more
comfortable on the fingers. I'm a CW op,

Interesting indeed. The comparison they quote is the IMD
dynamic range at 5 KHz spacing, which the RS wins. But
take a look at the 2 KHz spacing - the K3 trounces the RS.

My old SB-220 works just fine with my K3 on CW.
Yes, the SB-220's key line is 120 VDC. The kind that
will make you let go real quick if you accidentally
grab it. The K3 doesn't mind it. The K3's Key Out is
rated for +200V at 5 Amps.
The stock SB-220 won't do QSK, of course. Set the
K3 to
I have to agree with Steve on this. I'm a CW operator.
I would like to have the sidetone track volume, while
still being able to adjust the mix ratio, preferably
while working CW.
After FD this year one fellow asked me an excellent
question: What don't you like about the K3?
I had been answering
Our FD group used a K3 and Heil ProSet this year, and we were really
hoping to configure the K3 to have the speaker and headphones both
active. When we tried to use the SPKR+PH configuration, we found that
the speaker and headphone levels were mismatched such that when the AF
gain was

I would vote for XML as well. It's porky, but it's
human readable, it's universal and well supported
by many applications and frameworks, and one can
easily edit it by hand with Notepad or Emacs or

Me too. Wow.
I had reservations about loading a Beta before FD,
but I'm really glad I did.
The NR is now *very* effective at reducing summer static
on CW.
Great job, Elecraft team.

I agree with Bob, NW8L's comments below.
I've been on the air 99% CW for 41 years and I use
Auto-spot. I can easily match tones to better than
10 cycles by ear, but why bother? Auto-spot is working
better in 1.94 Beta and I have every confidence that
it will only get better.

The Easter egg in v1.94 Beta is more sidetone volume!
Or did I miss this in the release notes?

400 Hz is my upper limit as well.
Lower than 300 Hz is certainly desirable to me.
I have forty plus years on CW, and no significant
hearing loss. I do the between-the-headphones DSP
far more effectively at 400 Hz and below.

I picked up a good quality name brand mat on Ebay
for $35. It included the ground kit and a bottle
of cleaning solution.
The seller is Stanley Supply and Services.
They have more - see Ebay item 200195839901
No connection with the seller, just a happy buyer.
