Hi Rick,
Thanks for taking the time to write a long and extremely helpful reply
to my plea for help. I'm new to networking and port forwarding. Learning
by doing here. Great to have an Elmer step up.

I am trying to set up the KPA1500 Remote Software to access my KPA1500
from a distant location over the internet. Some questions:
Will I be successful using a reserved IP rather than a static IP?
The laptop I plan to use as a server is on the same LAN as the KPA1500.

Hi Eric,
I own an early K3, early KAT500, early KPA500, and early
KPA1500. Each a great product with great documentation and customer
support. I now also own a FLEX 6600. SDR is the future of radio. The P3
just is not state of the art, and it's poor value for its cost. Its

Fri Apr 20, late afternoon, I received an email from Elecraft
that my KPA will ship in about 10 business days. My order was submitted
on the morning of Aug 25, day 2 of orders, with a deposit of $1000. Of
course I'm excited. I send this mail to offer hope and a data point for

I'm wondering whether an upgrade to KIO3B would be a step
forward or a step backward for me. My current setup, which works FB,
uses two outboard USB sound cards. One outboard sound card runs CW
Skimmer using a Softrock SDR, K3IF out, and one laptop USB port. The
second sound
For those who are so disabled as to require an external crutch to
copy their own call and 5NN, it is a simple matter to reverse channels
in the sound card (at most it requires a reversing cable) to decode
audio on the sub Receiver.
Ah, the old CW snobbery! When is the notion that paddle

I use Skimmer with my K3. My SDR is a Softrock. Yes, it works
on all bands when setup properly. I use LP Bridge to create the virtual
COM ports to interface Skimmer and DXLab or N1MM+ simultaneously with
the K3. I highly recommend LP Bridge if you're not already using it. The

My K3, KPA500, KAT500, two USB soundcards and an SDR are all
cabled together and playing well. I would like to upgrade the firmware
in all 3 K line devices. Is it necessary to completely or partially
remove cables before attaching my computer via USB - serial port cable

Thanks to all for your replies. I'll try the updates without
removing the cables between the devices.

Your brain IS best at CW decoding - but only after you've spent
many hundreds of hours training it. You can work CW DX NOW by getting a
Keyer and learning one thing in CW - the sound of your callsign. Let CW
Skimmer decode for you. It's not as good as your brain, but this setup

I respect the hams that have spent many hours developing and
improving their CW skills ... until they attempt to discourage hams who
choose to come at CW with a different approach. The conjecture that
those of us using decoders cause more problems than those audibly

I own a High Sierra screwdriver antenna purchased in 2001 and
used portable on the back of my RV all around the US and Canada. The
antenna has needed several new contact springs, but has provided
reliable service given regular maintenance. However, my experience with
I, too may be having this problem. I upgraded to K3 Beta 4.42
prior to putting my KPA500 in service. I had been using LP Bridge for
years with great enthusiasm. Since installing the K3 firmware upgrade,
LP Bridge fails and closes each time I attempt to use it to send RTTY

many hours with the K3. Fred's explanations of some of the more
difficult to understand K3 features are lucid. He uses figures, images
