I would like to inject just one additional way of keeping the internal
battery charged - connect a smartcharger directly to the K2 internal

I have the setup you describe. KPA100 and tuner in the separate
enclosure and a K2 with the battery and the low power tuner. I power
both with an Astron RS20 with the modification for charging a
battery, RS20BB if you buy it that way.
