adding my own observations, I think I finally have my head around the
process.

Your analysis is right on.
The only thing I can add is that *if* during the tuning process, the
output power rises significantly (let's say to greater than 5 watts),
there is a possibility that you will not be able to discern the peak
because the RF Gain of the transmit stages may hit
