Sounds to me as if his P/S is going into a momentary over-current protection.
When this state occurs, it is in response to a request for the P/S to provide
current in excess of that for which it was designed to supply. For instance,
if the P/S built-in over-current protection circuit is

Mike,
I had this exact same problem during CQWW. It turned out to be RF getting into
the K3 thru the contest keyer leads, which I had never hooked up before.
Wrapping all the leads with RF chokes/toroids fixed the problem...check to see
that you have not added something new recently. I also
I have had this occur on 6m with external PA. I could not run over 200w
output on WSJT, I found that RF was getting in via the mike cord I unpluged
the mike since I was running WSJT and no farther problem. Interesting

Hi Paul -
As I said, it's a friends rig. I'm sure he doesn't have a beverage. No
clue if he's added anything lately, but I'll check when I see him again.

Just check the connection at the power supply. Mine was bellow my operating
desk and after a few days of frustrations, looking for RFI, installing
ferrites, RF chokes I finally discovered that the nut at 5 way binding post
was loose. I had the right voltage on standby but not enough transmitting.

His power supply reads
Yes, the K3 has the ability to display voltage and current drain.
See pg. 36 of the manual, under VFO B Alternate Displays.

Does this happen with the K3 fed to a 50 ohm dummy load, Mike? If not,
check that the antenna impedance is not too low, as it could be if you
are using a quarter-wave end fed. See bottom on p61 of the manual (Rev
D2). My K3 closes down on 160m with a 132ft longwire.

Ian,

Correction!
There are 18.5A (instead of 20A) under 14.0V.
I omit to subtract 1.5A for some
external accessories!
Sorry!

Is it possible that the TX power calibration by band was not done?
Might be worth trying it again with the dummy load. The new firmware
program makes it easy.
