It is not necessary , but I really enjoy a nice looking and heavyduty kit.

KX1 around, I use a plastic toolbox I bought on sale at Ace
for 5 bucks. To cushion the KX1, I set it on some of the
pink bubble wrap that Elecraft used to package the kit.
This works pretty well, and there's plenty of room in the
tool
