I agree with Don. I have an early KX1 which is very used, probably thousands
of QSO’s. My VFO problem only
showed up after perhaps a decade of heavy use, so I doubt that any normal
person would ever need to
replace it more than once in a normal lifetime. However if they are still

The play in the VFO shaft is an indicator that the KX1 you have has been
well used for some time.
The easiest solution is just to replace the encoder.
I have repaired many KX1s, but only a few well used ones have had
encoder problems, so I don't believe there is a "bad batch of

I purchased a used KX1 and noticed that the rotary encoder behaves
erratically on occasion where it will momentarily fail to change
frequency when turning the knob.
There's some play in the VFO shaft which maybe the cause of the problem.
The serial number is 666 which seems like an
