experimenting and googling based on your help I discovered:
apt-get install lib32stdc++6
Progress, but now:
ab3ap$ ./k3util

To answer your question, yes, there is an effort to make a 64 bit version.

ia32-libs is no longer used in the newer versions of ubuntu (debian).
Instead install:
lib32z1 lib32ncurses5 lib32bz2-1.0
This should fix the problems
