Re: [Elecraft] K2 receive problem

2004-06-15 Thread Brian Mury
No replies to this one yet, but I have spent a bit of time looking over
the schematic and poking around with my DMM scope. Here's what I've
found so far:

TX (RD4 on the control board MCU) is normally low, 8T is 0 volts. When
transmitting, TX goes high, Q3 turns on Q1 and 8T becomes 8 volts.

RX (RD5 on the control board MCU) is normally low, 8R is 0 volts. When
going into one of the CAL menu items or the ATU menu item, or between CW
elements when transmitting (see my original message below), RX goes
high, Q4 turns on Q2 and 8R becomes 8 volts.

I haven't found a description of any of these signals anywhere, but it
looks like TX and RX are MCU outputs; that TX should be high and 8T
should be 8V when transmitting; and that RX should be high and 8R should
be 8V when receiving. Is this correct?

If I short Q2's collector and emitter to force 8R to 8V, or short Q4's
source and drain to turn Q2 on and make 8R go to 8V, then the S meter
starts acting normally, but I get no audio out - so I may have more than
one problem. /MUTE maybe? I tried monitoring /MUTE with my scope, but
putting a scope probe on that pin mutes the audio when the receive is on
- the scope appears to be loading the circuit somehow. Floating pin?

Assuming TX and RX are indeed MCU outputs, and that RX does get asserted
under certain conditions, does this point to a bad MCU? Since RX *does*
get asserted, I would suspect that it's *not* an issue of something
pulling it low that shouldn't be.

Any ideas?

select any of the CAL menu items or the ATU menu item, the receiver and
S meter work normally. As soon as I exit the menu, it goes back to no
audio and the S meter reading max. I can also receive between elements
 when keying.

Anyone have any ideas what to check?

Yes, Gordon is producing keys again. They are very nice for sure. I had a VHS

makes a miniature version appropriate for QRP and travel, though i haven't seen

You can write Alberto at [EMAIL PROTECTED] He doesn't have a website. I

LDE's can be quite long. There were some notable one's reported in the
last WPX contest.

One happened to me. On 40 meters I was working a Guam station from the
east coast, and had been hearing short echoes for a while.

I sent my contest exchange, the other station QSL'd it and sent his
end of contact CQ. That was followed by the LDE of my contest exchange
in its entirety, which he QSL'd again. Which left ME a bit confused
until I figured out what I had heard. Wish I had a recording of that.
Easy to know it was my exchange because WPX exchange has a serial
number in it.

At this point, I'd guess that was delayed by better than two seconds,
but could not say for sure. That would be some number of times going
around the earth.

Over the years I have heard the once around the earth delay many
times. That one takes about the time of a sent dit, and is very
confusing if you are using QSK. These can be very strong, and have
heard it using the FT1000MP barefoot. Most often whatever path it is
lasts 3-4-5 minutes and fades away.

I made several recordings ( I can forward them) and it looks
like the signal is always approximately 1.52 seconds delayed
and lasts about 1 second. It can't be long path propagation
since 1.52 seconds works out to about 282,000 miles.

It sounds as if you have experienced a long-delayed echo.

But, then 1.5 seconds is longer than the typical LDE on 80 meters.
The
usual phenomenon in that band is via a travel path through the
magnetosphere, and a delay of max 0.5 seconds. See phenomenon no. 1

If you hear it during the day, it most assuredly isn't any kind of
ionospheric reflection or echo, since the D-layer absorbtion on 80
meters is too high to permit this. It really does sound like some kind

Thanks, David. To anyone attempting this procedure:

- Calibrating the S-meter is a bit tedious by whatever method you use.
I hope to make the KX1's S-meter much easier to calibrate in the
future.

- It's likely that only a very small range of S-meter menu parameter
values will be usable, since they depend only on the accuracy of the 5-
and 6-volt regulators. So a faster method might be to start with the
average values used by all builders, then tweak them up/down over a
very small range.

- Clearly, the S-meter function of the KX1 is secondary in importance
to the rig's other features. There are only six bars, limiting its
utility no matter how well you calibrate it.

RE: [Elecraft] Headband Magnifier - Father's Day Gift?

2004-06-15 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Wow! That is a low price!!

One of the things I like best about the Optivisor is that, like this device,
it is binocular. I didn't get the loupe with mine and have never missed it
(used an Optivisor for nearly 25 years so far).

What I do to adjust the magnification for really CLOSE work when needed is
to wear my reading glasses with it. When I want a little less magnification,
I just take off my reading glasses (or slide them down where I can look over
them like I do any time). That's the second real advantage of this type of
aid - you can use it with or without supporting eyeglasses.

Where I've seen cheaper lenses go bad is when they aren't optically
correct - have distortions and imperfections in the lens itself. One test I
use is to hold the lens in front of me and rotate it while looking through
it at a straight edge. If the line bends or bows, the lens isn't good
(unless it happens to be a prescription lens ground to correct astigmatism
G).

It sounds like you got some good lenses in yours.

Yes Rhombics are fun. Back in the Army MARS program days for me; I helped
out at the Fourth US Army Command MARS station at Ft. Sam Houston. They
occupied, for awhile, a hill station that had been used by the Signal
Corps
pre WW2 and during. They had Rhombics aimed at Canal Zone and South,
China, Washington DC and Europe, and maybe another. A barefoot KWM2 was
all
you needed to work the world, (100 watts or less). Like shooting fish in
a
 barrel.

Just takes too much real estate. You can have fun with loops with omni
directional coverage more nearly than the bi directional coverage of the
 Rhombic without termination. The Army
Rhombics were terminated with 600 ohm non inductive resistors as I recall.
 Made them unidirectional.

Glenn,

IC sockets are generally appropriate only for ICs containing firmware which may
need upgrading. For almost all other situations, the use of IC sockets is a
bad, obsolete, and very poor-engineering practice that can do nothing but
reduce unit reliability and performance.

Most importantly, Elecraft wisely discourages this practice and has officially
stated that performance problems due to the use of IC sockets that were not
specified in Elecraft's design will **NOT** be covered by warranty.

The last sentence says it all.

Re: [Elecraft] Socket IC's

2004-06-15 Thread Don Brown
Hi

This question comes up from time to time with new builders. You should not use
sockets except where Elecraft provides them. The use of sockets in RF circuits
will add capacitance and/or inductance and may cause the circuits performance
to degrade. None of the mods to date have required removal of an IC except for
the firmware upgrades and those IC are already in sockets. Sockets also add
height to the part and may cause clearance problems when the boards are
assembled or an option is added at a later date. Lastly a part installed in a
socket is less reliable than a properly soldered part. Bottom line don't waste
you time and money. Build your K2 exactly as the manual describes. I have built
14 K2's and never used any sockets other than the ones supplied.

Yes. Several very good ones.
1) Sockets are mechanical devices and will fail over time mostly due to
oxidation.
2) Sockets add inductance and / or capacitance to the circuits into
which they are inserted, disturbing ICs which involve tuned circuits.
This can lead to an inability to tune various parts of the radio.
3) Sockets add height to the ICs. Space inside the K2 is at a premium,
especially vertical height. Many of the modifications and options make
use of this vertical space. Socketing ICs may very well limit your
ability to add these options or modifications.

The ICs which would be changed for upgrades is pretty much limited to
the microcontrollers. These are socketed to allow their replacement
when upgrades are issued. Don't socket the other ICs unless you really
want to regret it or are VERY handy with a desoldering tool...

Re: [Elecraft] New convert

2004-06-15 Thread VR2BrettGraham

KC0QZX mentioned:

I work on a ship that goes to Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea. I am presently
getting my tickets to run from these countries while I'm dockside. I hope to
see a lot of you on 20-40 meters in the future.

In Taiwan the mainland, I believe the best you can do will be a permit to
operate an existing station... seriously doubt you will be able to lawfully
operate your own station on board a foreign flagged ship from dockside in
either place.

Re: [Elecraft] k2 audio power

2004-06-15 Thread Rick Dettinger
My Sony MDR 7506's have a DC resistance of 72 ohms per side. Since the
phones are in parallel, the rig will see about 36 ohms. I am not sure how
that relates to impedance but it seems in the ballpark. Heating and
reactance would increase it some but I don't know by how much. They are
comfortable and very sensitive. I bought them because of good reviews on
eham. 73 - Rick - K7MW

Sony MDR-7506 and MDR-V6 -- these are standard, large, closed headphones
with
nice soft cushions, work for for long operating sessions. These sell in
the
$100 range. Sony, being Sony, doesn't put impedance and sensitivity specs
on
the data sheets that I have, but I suspect they are in the same range as
the
 ER4S's.

Re: [Elecraft] Featherweight Yagi Design Questions

2004-06-15 Thread Stuart Rohre
Jack,
Yes, the beam could be shortened with helical wound elements of wire. This
was a beam shown in the ARRL Handbook way back, not sure if 1957 or when.
You could even make the elements of ham sticks!

You can fed one side with a monopole approach to get impedance matching, see
the Kent Brittain designs of cheap VHF beams in CQ VHF magazine. He may
also have them on the web, all wire elements there, too.

The Gotham vertical and beams of the 1950's all used thin Aluminium tubes
for elements and gamma matches for the beams.
