Re: [Elecraft] K4 operating manual now available as both .pdf and .html

2021-08-21 Thread David Gilbert

I never understood why Elecraft put out the PDF file as white text on a
black background in the first place.  It can't be printed, and if you
have to read it online the html version makes more sense.  It just seems
lazy to me for them not to have converted it on their end.

I can make the manual (K4 Built-In Operating Manual, rev C9.pdf) look
the way I want on the screen (black text on a white background with
images rendered in correct colors) in Adobe Reader by selecting:

Edit > Preferences > Accessibility

and then:

select "Replace Document Colors"
select "Use High-contrast colors"
unselect "Only change the color of black text or line art."
unselect "Change the color of line art as well as text."
select "High-contrast color combination:" = "Black text on white".

However, although it looks correct on the screen, when I print it it
still comes out with the black background.

I'm just using the free version of Adobe Reader.  Perhaps someone with
a paid-up version can get it to print correctly (print to a printer or
print to another PDF file).

In addition to the .html version, we're now providing a .pdf, as
requested.

NOTE:  The operating manual has a black background, consistent with
the color scheme used for all text boxes on the K4's LCD. Obviously,
printing a hard copy wouldn't be advised, as you would consume the
entire ink supply at your local Office Depot. It cannot be easily
converted to a white background given all of the text styles used, so
this isn't likely to happen in the short term.

I expect he meant “existed for the KX2/KX3”.

The Heathkit SB-230 is conduction-cooled with a beryllium oxide thermal link to
conduct heat away from the anode to the heat sink.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 temperature

2021-08-21 Thread Gary Memory
I guess I misspoke. I have boxes and boxes of "heat sinks" that I've
collected thru the years. I use them all the time. I'm constantly looking
on eBay for a size or two, for a given project, almost on a monthly basis.

I had no idea that after-market heat sinks existed specifically for the
KX2. And they look very nice as well! But again, I've never thought to
look until I saw this thread.

My sincere apologies.

2021-08-21 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
In your print dialog box look for "print background" and make it unchecked. You
could then print a white background as well as "print as a pdf." At least
that's how it works on a Mac OS.

I had no idea heat sinks existed. But, I've never looked, I suppose.
Looks like a good idea, but I'm guessing the radio will no longer fit in
its case. I ordered a set of heat sinks to try 'em out.

My process to deal with the heat is perty much what Brian said.

Thanks for the thread! I learn, I win.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2021-08-21 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

The weather vane switched directions, winds from the ocean instead of
from the smoke filled valleys.  Cooler, with clouds most mornings.
Temperatures have moderated to the mid 60s.

Earlier today I saw a tan patch on the far side of my land. It
resolved into a black tailed doe grazing beside the road.  Then a fawn
appeared beside her.  A minute later a second fawn showed up about
twenty feet away.  Twins are common.  They were browsing on my
neighbor's land where the greenery is more mature.  In a few years my
land will recover from the disturbed soil plants filling the thinning
scars.  The soil will become more complex with a variety of mycellia.

The sun was blank for two days this week.  There was some activity
on the far side.  Solar flux is slightly higher.  The ionosphere may
support comms but they will be faint.  I remember when we had better
conditions, but that memory is old and faded.

Please join us on (or near):

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday)

I believe the trip temp. is 60c. The rate you get there, of course, depends a
lot on power setting, mode and ambient temperature. I’ve found at normal shack
ambient I can cycle FT8 pretty quickly at 7 watts. But I always monitor PA TEMP
and back it down if necessary. At the beach with a 55f breeze - no problem 

It’s a great little rig. Have fun!

[Elecraft] KX2 temperature

2021-08-21 Thread Bill Lederer
Team:

I discovered that the KX2 will trip out if its temperature gets too high.
Clearly, this is a good thing. I am considering getting the heat sinks for
the side. I now run with the temperature displayed.

My question in relation to this is: is there a fixed temperature that it
will trip out at? Alternatively, what is a good threshold to observe to
avoid over-temperature operation? The manual does not seem to be very
specific.

Thanks for a great radio (I have it in my office upstairs with a wire to a
tree, and get on the air between meetings.) and for a great forum.
