I recently built the rf power meter discussed in the last QEX and QST
issues. It was a fun project and works very well. However, it needs to
be calibrated and this requires either an accurate (i.e. calibrated)
reference meter or a calibrated rf signal generator capable of -70 dbm
to +7 dbm (or

Check back in Jan 2004 QEX. There was a construction article on a nifty
little calibrator that you can build cheaply that would work perfectly.
It was written by K3NHI. It used a CMOS clock, battery and a few other
parts, and only requires a DVM to calibrate.

The signals have been quite weak ( RST 33 ), but I have managed to copy
a call sign and to give answer.
Howard,
There are alternatives to using another signal generator (and how do you
know you can trust its calibration) --
The Elecraft XG1 provides 2 levels that may be usable for calibrated lower
levels (-107 dBm and -73 dBm), and a calibrated 'scope that has adequate
vertical sensitivity along
I have a K2/100 SN 4853. It works fine except I sure do not understand a

Better than a jungle :-) (sorry, I couldn't resist) is to go to the
manual download page and see the K2 Programmer's Reference at the
bottom. It contains all the commands.

Hi,
I've been lurking on this list for about a month now, so I guess this is my

Hi chuck,
Well its Wednesday and I still have not heard back any calls from my CQ, my

keep trying hoping to get better. Grandpa said patience and persistence pays

Signal strength is all relative unless everyone has a calibrated S-meter

Dear Martin,
If your narrow filters are aligned using the Spectrogram software so
that they are all centered on your cw tone (say 600 Hz), then all you
need is to zero beat the signal while in the 1.5 kHz filter, and then it
will stay centered even at 100 Hz. The instructions for finding and
Lloyd,
The world of signal reports is not really well defined, and often a signal
can receive a 599 (or 59) report even if the s-meter is at the bottom - it
all depends on how crowded or noisy the band is at the time. Just report
what you think or what you see on the meter and all will be well.
Steve and all,
I beg to differ - for 2 reasons
First, centering a 1.5 kHz bandpass on 600 Hz will result in the passband
lapping over into the opposite sideband by 150 Hz. A preferred method is to
set the 700 Hz filter first (centered on 600 Hz) and then observe where the

Order a F-50-43 core. Take two #26 enamel insulated wires about 2'

with a cable tie. Wind the pairs through the center. Every time it passes
the outside, run the pair through a piece of heat shrink tubing, as
