(We just did a recent survey of what was available at Best Buy, Staples etc.) I'm amazed how low the cost has gotten for the 1920x1080 screens. Each screen resolution requires a different FPGA design load from local flash on the SVGA card. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - Range of integration with P3 (initial version)?
Hi, Heinz. It sounds like you are mistaken about the KX3 outputs. There is no SMA IF output. The SMA connector that has been shown on the drawings is for the 2M output of the optional transverter module (still in development). There is no output for use with the P3. It -may- be possible to devise an external device that converts the Rx I/Q output back to RF, for use with the P3. I do not know if Elecraft currently has such a device planned. At initial release, the KX3 will not be compatible with the P3. I hope this info helps. 73, Bruce, N1RX As far as is known the initial version of the KX3 will be equipped with a SMA jack, providing the I.F. signal. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Design disaster implies that it doesn't do what it was intended to do; it was obvious from the onset that this was an HD display adapter for the P3. This shouldn't be a big surprise, as the P3 is a self-contained panadapter and not a PC interface. You might not be interested in it, but that in and of itself does make it a disaster. Agreed. A used 15 LCD screen can be had on eBay for less than 50 bucks, I think I can rearrange things to make room for that. I think Elecraft has given us exactly what they said they would, and I would like to thank them for providing it. It is extremely apparent from this thread that no matter what Elecraft creates, somebody somewhere isn't going to be satisfied. Complaining about supporting 1920 x 1080 but not 1920 x 1200? I guess we should all be thankful at this time of year that resolution is the biggest issue that keeps us awake at night. 73, Happy Holidays, Dennis NJ6G On 12/18/2011 7:56 AM, Oliver Dröse wrote: John, I would not call it a disaster. [Elecraft] KX3 - Range of integration with P3 (initial version)?
Although the KX3 cannot be interfaced with the P3 (no IF to connect with), it will have baseband to any computer soundcard for running various SDR sw which often offer panadaptor screens. It should be compatible with such sw as Spectran, Spectrogram, JTspectra, etc. I will try it with Spectravue (which I currently use with both my SDR-IQ and LP-Pan). Many SDR programs offer the option to I/F with a soundcard and that will make them compatible to take baseband output from the KX3. What is still unknown is control of the KX3 via computer. [Elecraft] P3SVGA - Coming soon
John, Well it get that the P3SVGA is merely an external monitor I/F and not an external connection to the IQ baseband. Although that had been discussed as a possible future option (but this isn't that). The absence of use of the P3 as a SDR enabling operation of SDR sw on a computer with the K3, was one reason I went with the LP-Pan. I needed the ability to export the K3 IF to SDR sw for projects I am working on so the P3's single-use design did not satisfy that. Likewise, I could not justify the P3 cost on that basis (but sure that it is very nice). I also have no issue using my computer screen for panadaptor display. So not necessarily a disaster as I could chose. If I had bought a P3 expecting that I/F, then I might consider it a disaster. But I think that would be more a case of poor product research and planning on my part. Eventual addition of such an I/F for the P3 would be excellent enhancement in my opinion. That fits the same philosophy of having embedded 2m transverters and other features internalized rather than requiring a collection of different devices for each application. That is why I am interested in the embedded 2m transverter for the KX3. I would guess the embedded tuner in the KX3 fits the same concept. But it is near impossible to expect to get everything under the hood (unless you happen to own a '69 Shelby Cobra!). 73, Ed - KL7uW -- Message: 31 Date: Sun, 18 Dec 2011 10:33:32 -0500 From: John Ragle tpcj1...@crocker.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA - Coming soon To: Jim McDonald j...@n7us.net, elecraft elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: 4eee07cc.2000...@crocker.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Based on 2 responses to my query about the P3 display, I would have to say this is an absolute design disaster. Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA - Coming soon
Well ... the P3 is self-contained. I bought mine as a toy ... Andrea had been spending a lot on her hobby [needlepoint, about as expensive as ham radio], and my radio-account balance was making it into 4-digits. We have an equal-hobby allowance policy. What I found was that it is way more than a toy. 3 examples, there are more: 1. Go split, put VFO A on DX, see pileup, put VFO B somewhere on pile, pile disappears, DX replies to someone now, watch pile area. If you're even slightly lucky, exactly one signal will appear. Put VFO B on him, at the DX's TU, call. It's almost too easy. So far, it has changed DXing for me, but of course with my DXCC totals, practically all of them are new ones. :-) 2. CQ rate in a contest falls unacceptably low, decide to SP, just watch the screen for signals and pick them off rather than tune down the band ever so slowly, much of which will be dead at any given time as you pass it. 3. Looking for a CQ frequency? They easily show up on the screen. Put marker on it, tap SELECT, and you're there. I suppose a bigger monitor has it's value, I don't have room for one. But to write-off the entire P3 over the VGA output seems a little harsh. It has added a lot of value I didn't expect to my operating. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2012 Cal QSO Party 6-7 Oct 2012 - www.cqp.org On 12/18/2011 12:03 PM, Gary VK4FD wrote: I agree. Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA - Coming soon
A bigger monitor isn't just bigger; with the P3VGA the user gets higher resolution and more detail to work with. And for reasons too numerous to mention, the P3 represents a nearly perfect complementary visual aid to the K3 (and soon, the KX3). And in this case, at least to some, size does matter because with size comes better usability. Fred metioned a few of the key use cases, but there are dozens (probably). 73, matt W6NIA == On Sun, 18 Dec 2011 12:23:33 -0800, you wrote: Well ... the P3 is self-contained. Re: [Elecraft] KX3/P3 - clueless in NJ
I think of the KX3 as a radio that will have multi-use appeal. Yes, it should be a fine TFR, with great performance. It can also be a great camp radio, on the table in the RV or cabin. With the use of the (to come) KXPA100, It can be 100 W at the desk or in the car, and a super QRP rig on the trail or in the kayak. For many, it could be the ideal radio to grow with you. Remember the Foundation license in the UK is limited to 10W max. Get the amp after you upgrade, instead of a whole new rig. I think a product that may have some appeal is a slimmed-down version of the P3 for portable use. Perhaps the same thickness as the KX3. There's a lot of spare room in the current desktop version. In fact, the case was made out of steel to give it some weight so it wouldn't move around on the desk. How about this- a version of the P3 specifically for the KX3- it hinges over the front panel, protecting the knobs while in transport. Flip it up for normal operation, with a full featured panadapter above radio faceplate. I'd buy one. 73, Bruce, N1RX Please explain why someone would want to use a P3 with a trail radio, which runs off of batteries? [Elecraft] Hiccups with an older K1 and a new KFL1-4
Hi Folks, I purchased a second hand K1 a few weeks ago and am in the process of installing a new KFL1-4 that I just finished building. The K1 is serial number 00863. The RF board is Rev. D and and the unit is equipped with MCU 109E, which I think is the latest firmware version. The hiccups: 1. I didn't have the Errata sheet in front of me and managed to install all of the trimmer capacitors on the KFL1-4 board backwards. The trimmers have two flat sides, not one (which was confusing...without the Errata in front of me). I read that the adjusting screw is to be on the side that connects to ground. Thinking I was a smart guy, I used an ohmmeter to determine which trimmer terminal that was...and I still managed to get it wrong! Anyway, I used a non-metallic screwdriver to do the alignment and all went well. That said, is there any reason why I should remove and re-install (or just replace) the trimmers now? 2. All went well when I did the 4-Band Transmitter Alignment on page 19 of the KFL1-4 manual except that output on 15m is approximately 200 to 300 mW on the K1's internal and an external wattmeter. Output on all other bands was 2+ watts. Output on 15m remains at 200 to 300 mW even when I increase the power to 5W. All other bands are OK. Low output is covered in the Troubleshooting section, but not that I can see when it's only 1 band out of 4. Any thoughts? 3. I didn't get the original manual with the K1 and there are several differences between the Rev. D RF board and the manual I downloaded from the Elecraft website. The Rev. D RF board doesn't have a place for S2 (for transmitter offset adjustment). However, there appears to be a location for a switch at the front of the board, on the bottom and immediately behind the P1 header. Same thing? Just in a different location? Many thanks for any assistance! 73, Ken Alexander VE3HLS __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

The typical clamp-on RF current meter with a 10-turn secondary and a 50-ohm terminating resistance has a theoretical insertion resistance of 0.5 ohms, so it doesn't disturb the antenna very much. In practice the resistance is increased by the gaps in the core, so if possible I'd suggest threading the antenna wire through a ferrite toroid instead (probably #43 material for general HF use - NOT iron dust). Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA - Coming soon
Absolutely agreed, Fred. I have put the P3 to use in each scenario you've listed. I have found a down side, if you will. I have noticed issues with signals and have helped a couple of ops identify and resolve a problem. It takes a bit of tact to tell someone of a problem they are probably not aware of. However, the P3 utility's feature of taking a screenshot has proven quite useful. I, for one, want to put out the best signal I can and when I can help others do the same, the P3 has proven its value to me. It remains to be seen if the SVGA adapter is something I'll decide to get down the road. 73, de Nate N0NB -- The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA - Coming soon
Yes, one in particular ... WWV :-) I still cannot explain what appear to be harmonics of the audio tones at levels I sure didn't expect. I corresponded with someone at the station, he said they are sine waves derived from the cesium standards, asked for a photo, and thanks to the P3 Utility, I sent him two, one at about 5 KHz span, and one zeroed in on the carrier which clearly shows the 100 Hz sub-carrier and the IRIG-H time code modulation. He assured me they were on frequency and I hope I explained that that was *not* the issue. I have yet to hear back. If anyone can explain what several of us see on the P3 when looking at WWV at narrow spans, I'd sure like to know. I'm baffled. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2012 Cal QSO Party 6-7 Oct 2012 - www.cqp.org On 12/18/2011 4:21 PM, Nate Bargmann wrote: I have found a down side, if you will. Re: [Elecraft] P3 and K3 VFOB
John, Thanks for the exact description so I could confirm the bug. It's very strange - it only happens when cross-band and at certain spans and frequencies. I'll add it to the bug list. Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA - Coming soon
I recall your thread, Fred. As I've used Fldigi to calibrate various rigs with its Freq analysis mode, I too saw the effect. I assumed that it was likely an artifact of the soundcard or some such. That it comes up on the P3 discounts that assumption. I don't have an explanation. However, I'm reminded to take a look with the P3 and Fldigi sometime to see how they correspond. 73, de Nate N0NB -- The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA Display
I don't own a P3, but if I did I'd like to have the option to make the waterfall scroll from right to left like CW Skimmer does in Blind Mode. With a bit of practice, you can teach yourself to visually decode CW (assuming the resolution is adequate) sufficiently to catch a missing character without having to ask for a repeat. Having the display scroll right to left makes the CW string read left to right like most of us would more readily grasp. I'm not saying that a vertical scroll is a LOT more difficult to read ... only that horizontal is more intuitive. 73, Dave AB7E On 12/18/2011 8:44 PM, Alan Bloom wrote: On Sat, 2011-12-17 at 22:22 +, Ian White GM3SEK wrote: Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft wrote: Also, with more vertical lines the waterfall covers a much longer time period. It is used only for band indication so the KPA follows the radio. You need to connect the Key in line to the Kenwood's PA Key output. 73!
