A fixed L-R balance adjustment somewhere in a menu would be great too, for
guys like me who have one weak ear. Can't find a headset that I like that
also has individual volume controls.

[Elecraft] K3 + preamp for CQ VHF Contest

2013-07-22 Thread Edward R Cole
Mine is not a PR6 but equivalent in NF and gain specs. I
re-installed it after replacing the GasFet (mgf-1402) which somehow
bit the dust awhile ago. It is installed on the K3 RX IN/OUT same as
one does the PR6.

I measured increase of my K3 6m MDS from -136 to -145 dBm using my
XG3 and 30-dB attenuator. Worked very nice for the VHF contest this
weekend. I now have one of my 3-element 6m yagis end-mounted on one
leg of my tower at 22-feet and fixed in the direction of the US west
coast (120-deg.) from Alaska. I worked six stations in five grids in
the Pac NW on Saturday night in a two-hour opening.

I will have some new photos tomorrow on:

Hi Greg,
Unfortunately, no. Elecraft no longer offers it through their business. I was
in the same boat a couple of weeks ago, as I wanted a second one; since I now
am set up to run remotely. This way, both set of paddles would have the same
feel to them I wouldn't have to lug the one set across the country!

I found that the place with a decent price is HRO... $220 with free shipping.

[Elecraft] K3 - audio balance and hiss

2013-07-22 Thread Bill
I have a problem with a weak ear. To circumvent this, I use a Behringer
mixer panel, allowing me to control the gain for each ear. The panel
also allows additional audio control to tinker with. The output can go
to a jack for phones, or to my Behringer speakers - the latter for room
filling armchair copy.

Having the flexibility of the RX Equalizer and AGC settings, the K3 can
be the perfect receiver for nearly everyone. It is all in the settings.
All the user has to do is invest some time in experimenting.

Just for grins: On 75 meters at 9 AM today, my background noise level is
below S1, no ATTenuator or PREamp in use. There is a very minimal hiss
when tuned to an unused frequency. Signals really leap out at you. It
doesn't get better than this.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Erratic SSB Power Output

2013-07-22 Thread Terry Schieler
Jack,
I just sent my K3 (474) off to Elecraft service after wrestling with that same
problem. My TX output was suddenly all over the place. The K3 power out bar
graph showed 25% lower power than I had dialed up, but good, calibrated
external watt meters were showing 40-50% higher power than what I had set on
the K3.

After reading your post I wonder if a new version of Firm Ware might have
caused something to go wack-o.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Erratic SSB Power Output

Hello K3 Reflector.

I have an issue with my new K3/100 #7482. On SSB the peak power output isn't
stable. The SSB power output fluctuates about +/- 15% of where it is set, but
occasionally spikes to much more. The issue is on all bands but seems worse on
12/10m. I have tested the rig connected straight to a 1kW Bird 50ohm load and
have tried 2 different linear power supplies. The problem is present using the
two tone test feature, microphone or direct PC audio fed into the rig.

The real problem is: I set up my Acom 1000 at the legal limit here (400w) and
the power output is all over the place, sometimes 150w, then maybe 500w, then
300w, then all of a sudden the power can spike to 1kW+. I operate mostly CW.
Things seem more stable on CW, but compared to my previous Jap rigs (FT1000MP,
FT990, TS850) etc, the power output is very difficult to properly regulate. On
my previous rigs, I'd set them up to drive the Acom to a certain power level
and they'd run for hours rock solid without a peep.

I've had an e-mail exchange with a friendly Elecraft Guy which resulted in me
redoing the TX Gain calibration, he said the numbers looked good, but the
problem persists. I am curious to see if anybody else has this issue and knows
of a fix? As it is, the rig isn't much use to me.

Cheers

Another possibility is to get a brass plate from here:

One could get one with the Elecraft logo and your call engraved on it. He must
have permission to use the logo and may

even be able to duplicate the original Elecraft Hexkey one.

Only Ken can answer that. I will say I have been happy with my purchases.

[Elecraft] Fwd: KPA500 #1584 alive and running

2013-07-22 Thread Oli, DL1OLI
Hello List,

I am pleased to announce that the Elecraft KPA 500 #1584 is alive and running
fine.

This morning i collected the package from the customs office. After I arrived
at home I checked all the parts.
Nothing was missing so I started the assembly. After about 5 hours the KPA500
emitted the first Radio signal.

Now it is connected to my K3 with the KPAK3AUX (the 15 pole and the Y-cable)
cable and the K3 shows messages from the KPA500 if I press OPER/STBY.
Even the automatic power reduction works after I set Config:PWR SET = per band.

About 30 Watts seems to be enough drive. Next step KAT500 ...

So, that's not bad, considering inflation.

[Elecraft] KPA500 efficiency

2013-07-22 Thread Yngvi (TF3Y)
Hi folks.

I'm wondering about the efficiency of the KPA500.
Mine, which I assembled a few days ago seems to exchibit 76-78% efficiency
on CW. Admittedly I havent tested it on SSB.

The HV stands at 57.6V under load with current at 14A. Hence 806W input.
Measured output using my LP-100A at 630W. Drive for this 29W on 12m.

What class is the amplifier operating in on CW? Does the class depend on
mode? I'm using the KPAK3AUX cable.

The operating temperature seems to remain close to 50C.

Re: [Elecraft] K3- audio balance and hiss

2013-07-22 Thread mikerodgerske5gbc
Since it was suggested that this hiss is band noise, I tried it with no coax
connected to the K3. Same result.

This may indeed have something to do with a flat response as suggested. I've
often wondered if other manufacturers roll this high end off. I think it's
somewhere around 3500hz. At least my external eq slider for 3500 takes it out.
I suppose this may be natural and I've been spoiled to not hearing it before
getting the K3. No plans to sell it.
I just deal with it.

I have played around with what benefit is this high end anyway and have thus
far discovered it helps with female voices and with Austrailia and New Zealand.
I've found for them that high cut of 2700 brings out more clarity. That's a
width of 2.5. A little bit of hiss there but not too bad.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3} rig control with fldigi

2013-07-22 Thread Mike WA8BXN
I have found the solution to my problem. First, when the initialize button
is pressed an error message appeared on the bottom of the main window, not
on the configuration window that pops up. It took me a while to see that. I
am using the hamlib option to control the KX3. It seems the com port number
cannot be bigger than 9 for it to work. My Elecraft USB cable defaulted to a
com port greater than 9, so it did not work. Going to device manager for
that com port, one can change to com port number, in my case I changed it to
com2 and it works fine now.

Subject: [Elecraft] [KX3} rig control with fldigi

For some reason I can't seem to get any control of the KX3 from the PC

running fldigi. Used the elecraft utitily to verify port number and baud

rate. Set those in fldigi for hamlib. Set other parameters there as

suggested by K4MTX blog. Pressed initialized button. No error indication.

Changing dial freq on KX3 not reflected on PC, changing freq in fldigi doesn

t change XK3. Pressing T/R button in fldigi does nothing. I am able to

decode received signals with fldigi fine. I must be missing something simple

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] K3- audio balance and hiss

2013-07-22 Thread Don Wilhelm

Mike.

Look at the post to the Elecraft reflector by W4TV Joe Subich two days
ago. If you want to emulate the audio response of other transceivers,
use the RX EQ as he describes and you can have either a 3dB of 6 dB
rolloff in audio response.

The K3 audio response is quite flat out to 4.2 kHz.

Since it was suggested that this hiss is band noise, I tried it with no coax

This may indeed have something to do with a flat response as suggested. I've

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft's HexKey

2013-07-22 Thread EricJ
I used a BY1 mobile for 5 years. It sat on the seat next to me, though
occasionally a fast stop in traffic sent it into the firewall. No idea
why I didn't think to tether it. Try that with a Hexkey! It's still in
daily use in the shack and must be at least 30 years old now. Terrific
key. Simple and rugged. When I tried to order replacement nylon pivots
(they wore out), Bencher replaced them for free. Customer service
Elecraft-style.

That is correct, but the cost is $325, as compared to HRO's price of $220;
including free shipping.
