After being QRT for a number of years I'm returning to the air with a new
call and location. I am seriously considering buying a KX3 (I have a K2 and
a K1), but I'm a little concerned by reports of AM breakthrough (or whatever
the right word is). I know this is because of the direct conversion
I have breakthrough on my KX3.
It is most notably on 40 m.
I wouldn't Call it a problem, but it is annoying.

I want to thank all of you who responded to my post. I got the answers I needed
plus much more interesting info. I'm really looking forward to playing with the
programming and pairing the hearing aids with all my bluetooth devices!

Good discussions. No silver bullet.
I am trying to decide what to do when travling, often by bike and overseas.
My current strategy is close to half wave vertical. But shooting with a
slingshot takes time. A small fiberglass pole (2 .5 folded', 22' unfolded)
may help when trees are not around.
Does anyone know if the after market metal PTO main and sub tuning knobs for
the K3 or KX3 (main PTO) will damage or cause pre-mature wear and tear on
the optical encoders? Any feed back on how the weighted metal PTO will
improve the feel while tuning would be welcome. They are kind of

Hi Paul,
The vast majority of KX3 users don't have any issues with strong AM broadcast
stations. However, for those who do, we provide RX SHFT settings as well as
control over preamp gain. These are the same signal-management strategies used
by other companies using this receiver architecture.
Paul,
I have this direct AM detection on my KX3 every day mainly on 20-15-10 m
bands/ I would not call it a problem because shifting IF 8 kHz solves it
100%. Although this disables dual RX but one seldom (if ever) needs it on
this portable QRP transceiver.
Yet the radio is the best available
If turning the Preamp off fixes the problem, that would be my first choice
as long as I can hear the noise level drop when I disconnect the antenna.
If removing the antenna doesn't cause the noise level to drop, then the
preamp is likely useful for hearing weaker signals. In a QSO I'd still turn
If the interference is from a single station, you can use a wave trap. This
is a series-tuned resonant circuit across the transmission line that shorts
out that frequency.
Here is a good article about building one to get rid of a MW broadcast station.

Is anyone using an Astatic D104 amplified mic with a K3?

I am really happy I added the P3 to my K3. It is my window on the band. I can't
imagine operating without it. I have had the P3 for six months now, but just
recently it has started to display two big ugly humps of noise that drift
across the display. This happens on all bands, but it might not
Ron,
Switching preamp off does not help here. Shifting IF is the ultimate cure.
Besides I need preamp on on 10-15 meters most of the time to pull out weak
signals. Sometimes I need it even on 20 m.

I know there has been lots of discussion but I just made a change which
solved everything. I noticed that the peak was at the top most rotation of

Hi Roger, summer here, winter there I guess ...
When I first got my P3, I had a similar observation. Periodically, but
with no specific periodicity, the baseline would drift upward. Putting
my hand on the top of the case sent it down. At some point, I had the
scan at 200 KHz and realized

Hi Roger,
I had something similar with my P3. After cleaning the internal metal to
metal contact points on the case, my problem disappeared. Good bonding (and
tight screws) on all enclosure panels is essential.
I also had another problem with wandering spikes on the display. It turns

My KAT utility and the web site still show firmware version 1.32 as

Between us, the problem is that we've boxed a number of kits with 1.32
installed and our practice is not to ship kits with back level firmware. That's
all that's holding it up. 1.41 is fine.

I cannot speak for the wear and tear, as I've only had mine a short time -
around 6 months. I can, however, clearly state that the feel is fantastic. I
have never had a radio with such a solid feeling VFO. From time to time, they
appear on the used market which makes them less pricey.
