Hi all,
I am just waiting for my KX3 kit to be delivered and was looking at the P3
Panadapter for a future purchase, how well does the P3 integrate with the KX3 ?
My apologies if this has been asked before.

Graham,
Elecraft did write, in an email a year or so back, that they might be
producing an adaptor which would allow the KX3 to work with the P3.
Whether it is still on the cards I don't know.

Hi Graham,
The P3 is designed to work with transceivers that bring IF out, such
as the K3. The KX3 has I/Q outputs, not IF.
Many Windows/MacOS programs, such as HPSDR, provide a panadapter
function that samples I/Q from the KX3 using a stereo sound input. I
believe this type of setup is what

I have obtained a KAT 100-2 , the version in an EC2, and would like to
convert it back to the low height version KAT100-1 . Anyone got a spare set
of panels or would like to swop panels ?

Ron,
Litium batteries are expensive and you cannot recharge them. I'm in
the process of building a charging system for my weather station
which uses a lithium battery at night and on cloudy days.
I chose a 12V solar panel that charges a 12v lead acid battery which
in turn connnects to a device
Short version: the P3 does not work with the KX3 at all. It is K3-only.

Actually, the P3 will function with a transceiver with an IF under
20-some MHz, where the IF output is available. The P3 integrates best
with the K3 though.

My wife and I enjoy spending time on Mustang Island, TX near Port Aransas. We
always stay at Mustang Towers, which has 15 floors (and we always get a 15th

was my first outing there with the KX3, and I had a ball. I
There have been several questions about lithium batteries and their use as a
substitute for lead-acid batteries.
The discussion caused me to question my understanding of the definition of a
lithium battery.
The FAA uses the term to cover both lithium metal batteries that are not

Which two of the 200/250/400 and 500 hz filters are best for digital
use, primarily RTTY, both contests and dx. I understand that for JT-65
and PSK the standard ssb filter, or even the AM filter is useable. I am
concerned that the 200 hz might be too narrow for RTTY. I work some CW

I am concerned that the 200 hz might be too narrow for RTTY.
The 200 Hz filter is too narrow (mine measure about 190 Hz at -6dB).
The 250 Hz filter - nominally 370 Hz at -6dB - is a good match to
the minimum necessary bandwidth for MMTTY, 2-Tone, etc. to function

I have a 250 Hz filter I use for PSK and RTTY. It helps when
there is a strong nearby station that overloads the AtoD
converter between the K3 and my computer. During a RTTY contest,
I found it helped, but the dual frequency DSP RTTY filter was
more than enough for most contacts.

I don't know if the P3 can be interfaced easily with the KX3, but

IMHO, RTTY is like AM -- a classic mode which uses more bandwidth
than necessary, but is nice to keep around for nostalgia and to

Wayne,
Something easier to implement than what I suggested would be to simply *not*
change the AF/RF mode on a band change. That way, there would be no
additional menu option to implement. All an operator would have to do is
click the AF/RF button *once* on power up and they would be able to
Wayne,
I've been saying that the AF/RF reverts to AF on band change, but I
noticed that it reverts to AF upon a memory recall as well, regardless of
whether the recalled frequency is within the current band or not. So I
suppose that I should adjust my wording to say that anytime the firmware

Excellent idea! Sometimes simpler isbetter.
I,
Tom,
The current displayed by the K2 indicate only the current draw of the
base K2, not the KPA100. External metering is required to measure the
transmit current of the KPA100.
Your measurements are within the realm of reason.
