Still trying to sort out my transverter problem - see my first post on that
today. I have only the transverters connected to the K3. When I connect
power to the rig runner, the k3 tried to power on by itself and displays
'turn on KAT 500'. I don't even have one, but I do have a P3, which is not
As so often happens, when I take the time to explain a problem, I realize
the solution.
My problem was that I accidentally swapped the two BNC cables when
reconnecting to the K3. Connected correctly and all is well
Maybe these postings will help some other poor soul someday anyhow.
I disconnected my K3 completely to move it. I have the 3 XV series
transverters and a p3.
Moved the k3 and transverters to a different spot and reconnected without
the P3.
All are powered through a rig runner.
When I apply power to the rig runner the K3 powers on by itself, which is
odd.
I used a Softrock and a Xonar U7 USB sound card for awhile til I got my P3.
I tried a few different SDR software packages, which each had their pros
and cons.
Now that I have a P3, my Softrock and U7 are for sale.
The Softrock I have is overkill for a panadapter - it's a RXTX Ensemble in
a KM5H

K3 This year at Dayton, they had the choice of a hat or t-shirt with
purchase of certain gear, including the P3.
So, I've spent about 4k for a hat and a t-shirt, but they came with a very
nice radio and panadapter :)

I don't have the tilt base. I bought my MA40 and beam used, so not sure of
its age. Quality seems fine.
I made an adapter for a cordless drill to allow me to crank it up and down
without cranking.
Vic is correct that the TA33Jr is a little more narrow banded than some
leather beams. However, I use
Terry - My tower is a MA-40, bracketed to the end of my garage, with a
rotor and TA-33Jr on top.
I've worked 200 DXCC entities with it at 100 watts from here in the RF
black hole of Minnesota, so it seems like an effective setup for me.
It's not a 'super station' but I have plenty of fun with it
At Dayton this year, one of the gentlemen at the Elecraft booth (I believe
his name was David) took the time to walk me through the P3 and all its
functions. That really opened my eyes to what it could do. I ordered the
basic P3 kit (without the options) the next day. I've had it connected to
my
One other thing to add for the original poster...
Something that's really helped me is to use a program called Iambic Master
to help me learn how to send well with paddles. It requires you to have a
winkey-compatible keyer connected to a PC (I use a Microham unit).
You plug your paddles into the
I bought a SDRPlay from HRO at Dayton, but haven't had a lot of time to
play with it yet. From the specs, it looks like it would be much better for
that application than the cheap RTL dongles. It's not as cheap as a dongle,
but at around $150 US, it's cheap enough to experiment with. I think I
Any of the contest loggers will work for VHF contesting- I've used N1MM and
Writelog on VHF contests.
N3FJP has several loggers for specific purposes, including one specifically
for VHF+ contesting. I probably use that one more than the others for VHF.
All of them have the features you mentioned.
To K1TGX- I have a K3 (not K3S), but the integration with DXLab is about
the same. The part of DXLab that integrates with the radio is called
Commander. Once Commander is configured to talk to the radio, you can start
up DXKeeper and it will find it.
To N4ST- yes, Commander has buttons and sliders
Cliff said exactly what I was going to say. DXLab suite is excellent for
DXing and general purpose logging, and has all the items on your wish list
(plus lots more). It is a collection of programs that each have a specific
purpose, but work seamlessly together. It has excellent documentation and
