[Elecraft] Elecraft engraved bezels and brass ID plates

2017-07-04 Thread Ken Kaplan

Hi all.
Thanks for all the kind responses to my retirement.
I also received inquires about ordering plates, before I stop working.

S, I will take orders for Elecraft acrylic bezels and brass ID
plates UNTIL JULY 18th.

On the morning of the 19th I will place a final order with Elecraft.
I will email Paypal (or Square if you don't like Paypal) invoices as I
get orders,

but I will hold all paid orders until the plates arrive from Elecraft.
I assume all orders will be completed by the end of July.

There is a possibility I can supply bezels for the KPA1500. I have not
inquired about pricing

or availability, but if you are interested please email me.

Re: [Elecraft] Engraved Elecraft bezels (off topic)

2017-07-02 Thread Ken Kaplan

Hi all
I was asked if the bezels will continue to be engraved (or pad-printed
in case of the K3s).

So far, the answer is no, unless someone else wants to pick it up.
I was planning to take the computer engraver with me, but it looks like
it may be sold.

If anything changes, of course I will let the list know!

[Elecraft] Engraved Elecraft bezels (off topic)

2017-07-02 Thread Ken Kaplan

Fellow hams:
I'd like to thank all of you who used my services to engrave bezels for
your Elecraft products. It is finally time for me to retire, after
working in my dad's 70 year (1947-2017) old business since I was 12.
Since I was licensed in 1962, it was great to have some bucks for radio
equipment.
My wife and I will be (most likely) move to The Villages (FL). If any of
you on the list live there, I would love to hear from you (off list at

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Future KX3/KX2 accessories?

It would be great if you could plug something internal to a PX3
to make it more of a 'display terminal', with a bit more features, maybe
for contesting.

I know there is a 3rd party product that does this and much more,

does not allow the ACC 1 computer interface to "pass through"

My ideal device would be a very simple display that connects in the

[Elecraft] K3s custom bezels

2015-10-19 Thread Ken Kaplan

Hi all.
I am currently accepting requests for the K3s bezels and acrylic inserts.
The black bezel lends itself nicely to pad-printing (like silk
screening), so that
will be the direction I am going. There are quite a few surfaces to
print on the bezel,
and I will accept user artwork. I have a pdf of the bezel, showing the
locations available for printing.
The acrylic inserts can be engraved, but since I do not have a K3s (only
the KX3 line),
I will need to work with someone to see where it can be engraved, so it
does not block any of the display.

If interested please rely OFF LIST to k...@arkayengravers.com.
I have one black bezel already in the field, and I am waiting for a
picture of the completed installation.

[Elecraft] [K2][K3] Rework Eliminator(TM) Milestones Plans

2009-04-12 Thread Ken Kaplan
We are considering aftermarket accessories for the K3 and welcome your
ideas for new products. We are especially interested in kits ...

o Composed of one or more printed circuit boards.
o For which there's sufficient interest to justify producing 60 units.
o We could design, produce, and offer for sale for less than $40.
o That might require custom engraving and/or pad printing.

We are already considering an external K3 mic adaptor based on our
internal K2 adaptor. It would work with (just about) any mic that has
an 8-pin Foster connecter, and permit use of either the K3's front panel
connecter or the rear panel mic and PTT jacks.

--- - - - ---

If you are not familiar with our Rework Eliminator(TM) aftermarket K2
accessory kits, we invite you to visit our website. Or, for a
third-party perspective check out the following product reviews at
www.eham.net ...

o www.eham.net/reviews/detail/6372 = Headers Assembly Method
o www.eham.net/reviews/detail/6918 = Internal Mic Adaptor

--- - - - ---

We also invite those of you who have experience with our products to
consider writing your own reviews; that they might benefit future K2
builders. You can do this via the links below ...

o www.eham.net/reviews/addreview/6372 = Headers Assembly Method
o www.eham.net/reviews/addreview/6918 = Internal Mic Adaptor

--- - - - ---

On a personal note, we consider 13 April 2005 to be the official
beginning of our Rework Eliminators(TM) collaboration. Also, we reached
a significant milestone last month when we received our 500th customer
order! It has been our pleasure serving the Elecraft community the past
four years, and we look forward to many more.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net Announcement - how did the K3s do?

2008-03-07 Thread Ken Kaplan

I found the group on 7.185, after listening for a few minutes on 7.188.
I was able to check in through Mark,WQ7X. WA7BOC was barely audible
until about 1/2 way through the net. I did also hear another station
from Texas (I think) but do not remember his call. Very heavy static,
the filters in the K3 (#253) did not do much good. But then I'm only on
a vertical. WIll try 20, this Sunday.

Hello All,

How did the K3s perform under last night's conditions?

At just about 9PM EST, I heard the word Elecraft on 7188, and
after that I could hear that there were transmissions on that frequency,
but given the static crashes and high QRN level, nothing more was
understandable (it just goes to show the Elecraft stands out). At
about 9:15, I clearly heard K4PV in N.W. Florida and he was able to copy
me, then he talked to another station who I could hear but not
understand. At about 9:30, everything disappeared (except the static and
QRN).

My K2 does a wonderful job on CW under such high QRN conditions
since I can use my very narrow IF and DSP filters to essentially
eliminate the QRN, but it doesn't do well at all on SSB - when the
signal is barely understandable, using narrower SSB filters doesn't
significantly reduce the QRN and makes the signal even more difficult to
understand (the SSB filters work better under heavy QRM conditions).
And the noise blanker in my K2 of course has no effect on the static and
QRN conditions we had last night.

So, how did the K3s do under last night's conditions?

In actuality the QSO he heard on 188 was two guys waiting for the ESN to

[Elecraft] K3 - This thing does everything!

2008-02-24 Thread Ken Kaplan

Hi guys.
Worked 33 contacts in the NAQP contest on 80, 40 and 20.
Nice not having to use a computer at all. But you need to be watching
that display for the exchange!!

The funny thing that happened, was when I worked Lee, K0WA.
As his name scrolled by, my wife had walked into that shack, saw it, and
said, 'Hey, the new radio tells you the person's name also!' So, I had
to explain RTTY and the decode function.

But all-in-all, I had a great time for the short amount of time
participating. I had a bit of trouble getting the PSK and RTTY data to
decode. It would have been easier if I read the manual first and it said
you also need text decode on also! Not just DATA MD chosen! Oh well,
lots to learn with this radio. I've retired the TS-570 after 10 years.

Hi Greg
Well, I did not operate for that long, actually, I think I had 41

Only 350 Q's. That's great. I am happy when I get over 25.

I had fun in the NAQP also, but did not do as well as I had hoped. This was
my first time really trying SO2R and I think it was more of a distraction
than a help. I hope that changes cuz it was rough. Only ended up with
about 350 Qs. Was aiming for 500.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 - This thing does everything!

I was doing some work at the US-West / Qwest labs in southwest Denver,

In the mid 80's I had access to a 13 element log periodic that covered

40 -10 meters. It was 200 feet above ground. The club station had a
Henry amp to drive it. Man, what a signal!

Anyone know anything about this antenna? I know it was made by Collins

was big!

Re: [Elecraft] Re: K3 buttons

2007-09-12 Thread Ken Kaplan

Guys:
I just want to add a comment on the buttons.
I've not seen the K3 yet (mines in the 2nd batch), but I am very
familiar with ultra-violet and epoxy hardcoats. My company has been
printing (and engraving) keycaps for control panels, keyboards and
switches since the early 70's. Under normal use (like we hams do), they
will last quite a long time. The only time I've seen a failure, is when
we did a job for Jiffy Lube, and the grease and oil on the techs hands
did a job on their keyboards (we switched them to sublimation process to
cure the problem). I'm sure Elecraft cannot go to sublimation, as there
can be no white legends, and I'm sure 2-shot molding is too expensive.

Simon et all:
If the keycaps are 2-shot molded, it will last forever. You can pull a
keycap off, and look at the bottom. If you see a large area of the same
color as the legend, then it's 2-shot molded. However, Keytronics Corp
produced quite a few keyboards, that were coated, and wore off very
quickly. I has many people call and see about replacement keycaps. But
keyboards are so cheap now, you can (almost) just chuck it.

[Elecraft] Supply Demand for Our New Plug Play K2 Parts Kits

2006-03-19 Thread Ken Kaplan
We have experienced a sudden sharp increase in demand for our Stock
K2 PCB Upgrade Parts kits. No doubt this is due to the recent flurry
of positive comments on the Reflector about our Rework Eliminator(TM)
Plug Play K2 Accessories and our rework-free K2 assembly approach.

As a result, we are temporarily out of stock of our K60XV Parts kit.
This shortage means that we are also unable to ship our All Parts kit
and our two money saving Combo product offerings that include our
unmodule headers.

We apologize for being caught by surprise by the increased demand and
will strive to remedy this situation as quickly as possible. For more
details, please see the Delivery Status page on our website. To find
it, first go to www.unpcbs.com and click on Ordering, then click on
Delivery Status. (We are presently quoting a ship date of April 3rd.)

[Elecraft] Building Your New K2 With Un-Module Headers

2006-01-02 Thread Ken Kaplan

THIS MESSAGE IS FOR THOSE OF YOU INTENDING TO BUILD YOUR NEW K2 PER THE
REWORK-FREE / PLUG PLAY READY K2 SUGGESTIONS ON OUR UNPCBS WEBSITE.
  --- - - - ---
As a follow up to my previous post on this subject, most of the necessary
updates to our unpcbs website ...

http://home.cfl.rr.com/garyhvizdak/KI4GGX/unpcbs/

... pertaining to our new Stock K2 - PCB Upgrade Parts Kits, have now
been completed. Additional minor changes will continue for the next day
or two to revise a few remaining webpages.

As soon as we know our costs, we will update our online shopping cart
and begin accepting orders for these new kits. We anticipate shipping
will begin early in the second week of January.

For those of you who haven't started building your new K2, the recent
updates to our site are MUST READING! There you'll learn about the
considerable benefits of incorporating all of these parts and un-module
headers into a single seamless K2 assembly process. It also explains
which of our individual/per option parts kits you'll need, based on
which options you got with your K2.

  --- - - - ---
Meanwhile, work on our new Companion Guide remains suspended since
Christmas Day, in order for us to prepare to supply these parts kits as
soon as possible. Once beta testing of the guide is complete, we will
publish it online in its present state. Within a week or two, we intend
to re-release it with the improvements suggested during beta testing.

73,
Gary, KI4GGX
K2 #4067

P.S. We may add one additional part to our upgrade parts kits product
line. It would be a set of replacement PA thermal pads, to support those
of you wishing to perform a one-time plug play ready upgrade on your
existing stock/bare (or partially loaded) K2.

I'm very pleased with the Rework Eliminators. It's a fine addition

Hi Matt,
Ken and I appreciate your positive review. Your favorable
reaction to our kit is exactly what we had been aiming for since early
May when we began to seriously consider producing this kit. We hope
that many other Elecrafters will share your view and also find these
boards useful.
Thank you for your suggestion about the black foam. We will look
into the possibility of offering an appropriately sized storage box
and black foam cut to fit. In sufficient quantities, we may be able
to offer this as an option for a reasonable price.
I'd like to take this opportunity to acknowledge Doug Shields

finishing up the User's Guide.
