Have you considered the Piglet by pignoly.net ?
The Piglet provides CAT via WiFi.

[Elecraft] [OT] KX2 on SOTA Activation in TF - TF/SV-041

2018-05-01 Thread Yngvi (TF3Y)
I thought some here might enjoy some photos from my first SOTA activation
using my brand new Elecraft KX2. This transceiver is absolutely brilliant
for SOTA! Mine has the built in ATU and used the built in Lithium battery
pack. The antenna was a 58' LW held up using a 13.5' fiberglass pole from
sotabeams.co.uk with a 12.8' insultated counterpoise laying on ground.

Everything performed perfectly. The farthes QSO was with K6MW in WA.

Here is a link to the photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/qLDY9cT6tWZaAdzm9

Re: [Elecraft] Charging Lithium Ion batteries (KX2) from Car

2018-04-15 Thread Yngvi (TF3Y)
Thanks Jim.

I'll take a look at that one. I wasn't thinking about mobile operating but
the KX2 would run directly off the car battery.
Rather, I was thinking of what my possibilities were when I spend days away
from an AC outlet..The Samlex inverter you show in your presentation
clearly needs a LOT of additional filtering for your setup!

Perhaps the folks at Elecraft have a good pointer.I think a mobile charger
might be a good addition form some of us.

Just wondering how you go about charging the Elecraft supplied Lithium Ion
batteries for the KX2 from a car (13.8V) supply?

Are there recommended chargers for this? The Tenergy charger supplied by
Elecraft runs from 100-240V range.

Re: [Elecraft] Minicircuits splitter for diversity?

Hi Jim.

I have the PSC-4-6+ which I put in my own enclosure. I use that together
with the DX-Engineering preamp.
Before that I was using the DX-Engineering 2-port splitter but I needed
more ports, i.e. this one https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/dxe-rsc-2 .

The MiniCircuits one works fine. They also have units going much higher in

Re: [Elecraft] K3S QST Article

2016-10-18 Thread Yngvi (TF3Y)
This is an interesting thread but I wonder about the practicalities... Of
course we all want to emit a clean signal.

In which cases might the IMD be a problem? Running full power off a battery
with voltage dropping?
Running almost full power to drive an older type tube amp?

How fast does IMD deteriorate with increased power from the K3S or K3?

What are the IMD figures when running 20-25W driving a linear amp. such as
the KPA500?

[Elecraft] RJ45 to DE9 cable (E980297) for upgraded K3

2016-10-02 Thread Yngvi (TF3Y)
Hi folks.

I misplaced my RJ45 to DE9 cable for my upgraded K3.

After a while I found this (see photo on link below):
https://goo.gl/photos/LJwu7gZpEsx6N1K47

This cable looks like it may be the one but I´m not sure. I had two of
those one with a female DE9 and the other with a male DE9.

However, I have a faint memory of the cable I got with my KIO3B upgrade
having been gray whereas these are blue.

Can I measure the cables? Where would I be able to locate a diagram for the
pinout?

Thanks / 73,

[Elecraft] OT - RX Active Multicoupler Diagrams/Design

2015-09-13 Thread Yngvi (TF3Y)
Pardon the Off Topic but I'm looking for a diagram / design for an active
HF receive moulticoupler with outstanding dynamic range.

Any suggestions?

To follow up on my previous OT posting then I have found two designs on the
web sofar, quite different constructions:

I currently favor the first design but got some doubts on the dynamic range.

Allow an antenna to be active on RX Out regardless of whether the K3 is

Some time ago I was discussing this with one of the locals who maintained

In any case I guess the K3S has better TX IMD due to the new PA design.

was NOT responding to the original poster. I was responding to the

KPA500 had failed. My point was that rather than risk further damaging a
NEW, still under warranty KPA500, why not simply let Elecraft fix it.
I'm not sure why it's unbelievable that I'd send my NEW amp to
Elecraft for repair, but to each his or her own.

I wasn't suggesting that no one needs a schematic, just that it probably

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 efficiency

2013-07-23 Thread Yngvi (TF3Y)
Hi Ignacy.

Many thanks for the response.

The reason for my query was that I was puzzled by my calculated efficiency
numbers - I felt they were high. This also led me to wonder about the
operating class of the amplifier, i.e. whether it was operating in linear
mode on CW or not.

I have confirmed the accuracy of the LP-100A which conforms broadly with
the built in meter of the KPA500.
The LP-100A was factory built so I'd get a NIST calibrated unit. It's an
impressive instrument.

I have not confirmed the accuracy of the KPA500 voltage and current
measurements. I don't think there is anything to adjust in order to
calibrate these.

I did get a response from Wayne N6KR on another email list, where I posted
my message as well. I'm sure he doesn't mind me quoting him: As with all
broadband power amplifiers, the efficiency of the KPA500 varies somewhat
from band to band due to variations in matching circuit efficiency and
transformer
performance. That's why typical efficiency is specified.
However, I got no comment on the operating class of the amplifier on CW or
whether it depends on what mode you are operating the K3. Anyone?

with output power. If about 50% with 500W then about 62% with 620W.

A data sheet for Microsemi 1 KW module shows efficiency curves in Fig 19 at
 www.freescale.com/files/rf_if/doc/data_sheet/MRFE6VP61K25H.pdf. About 65%

 efficiency at 700W with IMD3-40db. Reaching 80% at 1.4 KW and IMD3-28db.
The dissipation is about 370W at 700W level and 350 at the 1.4 KW level.
These numbers do not include losses in transformers and filters.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 efficiency

2013-07-23 Thread Yngvi (TF3Y)
Thanks for the info Lyle. Interesting!

I must study the KPA500 design.
I find it a bit embarrassing having assembled the KPA500 without having
more fundamental insight into its design.

However, I got no comment on the operating class of the amplifier on CW or
whether it depends on what mode you are operating the K3. Anyone?

[Elecraft] KPA500 efficiency

2013-07-22 Thread Yngvi (TF3Y)
Hi folks.

I'm wondering about the efficiency of the KPA500.
Mine, which I assembled a few days ago seems to exchibit 76-78% efficiency
on CW. Admittedly I havent tested it on SSB.

The HV stands at 57.6V under load with current at 14A. Hence 806W input.
Measured output using my LP-100A at 630W. Drive for this 29W on 12m.

What class is the amplifier operating in on CW? Does the class depend on
mode? I'm using the KPAK3AUX cable.

The operating temperature seems to remain close to 50C.

Re: [Elecraft] cobweb antenna

2013-05-31 Thread Yngvi (TF3Y)
Hi folks.

I used a CobWebb by G3TPW for a few years. It's a nice and compact antenna
and it withstood the Iceland climate very well.
I had it on a 16 ft. 2.5 dia aluminium tube at the top of my house. Total
height above ground 32 ft.

The performance was always better than a full size 1/4 wave ground mounted
vertical and noise floor on RX considerably lower.

The CobWebb has a fairly narrow bandwith as it is a dipole bent in a
square. The dipole is T matched with a current balun at the feedpoint. It's
almost omni directional.

I currently have a 2 el. SteppIR but I really liked the CobWebb. It's quite
an efficient antenna.

 Hello Bill,

I have no intent to denigrate the design and functionality of the Cobweb
 style antenna but.

Several years ago I was inclined to acquire the G3TPW commercial version
of the CobWebb antenna, I found the website ( www.g3tpw.co.u ) and sent
an email asking how to order, method of payment shipping charges, etc.
Got no response..I thought maybe there was some problem with the 1st
email attempt so I sent another.still no response. So I sent an inquiry
via regular mail, including a self addressed (with postage) return
 envelope..no reply whatsoever...

So I can't comment on how well the G3TPW version functions..but in
consideration of my above described experience, maybe you should limit
your effort to a homebrew version.

Also, later I had good results with the homebrew version of the Buddipole,
built from free instructions on W3FF's homepage (
https://sites.google.com/site/w3ffhomepage/ ). But back then I was doing
more portable ops and since the commercial version is more sturdy I decided
to get one..saw one being offered on ebay so I bid and won the auction.
Eventually I lost one small bit and needed a replacement part so I
contacted W3FF and got very fast responseeven though I hadn't purchased
 direct from them.

So I've decided customer service is just as important as functionality
when deciding which products to acquire. Just my opinion...

 Subject: [Elecraft] cobweb antenna

I'm still in the pre-purchase stage.. but I'm sort of thinking that the
 K3
is where I'm going to end up.. Possibly with the preamp...and then there is
the big problem: what to make it to the air with.

The idea of starting off with the buddipole system is out there - and very
 possible...

I've also been reading up on the plusses and minuses of many of the
alternatives that may be possible in an apartment life...

One is the magnetic loop - which is a tad pricey with the vac. variable --

lots of copper, and the need to tune the thing every time you change
frequency - and not just antenna tuner stuff - as in changing the cap on
 the
antenna itself. It is a very high q (and thus voltage and current)
critter...Rube Golberg figured out how to do that.. motors with long screw
drives into a sealed box with the cap inside..with very high voltages
there... and thus requiring altitude for safety..

I came across a nifty square thing called a cobweb, which is more or less
semi-flat over 4-5 bands... is very light..and can be made of pvc pipe or
possibly fiber glass because it just has 5 wires in a big square.. One
antenna to cover 20 17 15, 12 and 10 meters sounds interesting.. One of the
designs even works on 6, but has higher losses... (That may be the baluns
they use for a 4-1 impedance match and to go unbalanced...

Has anyone tried one of these critters, and if so, is the Elecraft happy
 with it?
