Sounds pretty similar to what I did. The white rectangle in my photo is a
piece of white sticker vinyl stuck to the PCB under the area where the LCD

I made my own backlight for my K1 before the Elecraft version came out.
It was actually more of a sidelight, but it works fine. I took a white
LED, sanded the plastic case to make it more diffusive, and fed it off
the 12 volt buss with a current source made from a gate-source connected
I did a backlight on my K1 ~20 years ago that worked out well. The key was
getting a transreflective LCD panel so the light would show through. The
original panel was opaque. Here's a couple of pix:

Ken,
The K1 LCD backlight is no longer possible. The original used half of
the K2 backlight strip which is no longer available and the new K2 strip
is too thick to fit under the K1 LCD.

Help:
Is the LCD backlight only held to the foam pad by that 1/8 strip?
Also, I am finding it difficult to soldr the anode cathode to the
jumper and resistor...any suggestions?
Thanks

Greg,
I assume you mean the 1/8 inch thick double adhesive strip - if so, the
answer is yes, that is what holds the backlight in place. Position it
properly on the first try because that double sided foam tape is
difficult to remove if you do it wrong - follow the instructions precisely.

Did you purchase the backlight -option- kit? The backlight does not come
standard with the K1 kit.

Can anyone give me a hint to make my backlight lighten up ??
I have checked solderings and power from U3 pin 1 and 8.
All looks OK to me. The LCD works perfect, but no light.
Any suggestions ?

now add backlighting to the rig's display. A kit containing all needed
parts is available, priced at $19.95 (model K1BKLTKIT). Here's what the
K1 looks like with the backlight installed:
