I thought I understood this but appears that I had it wrong.
According to the SMTR calibration procedure, it is set with the PRE on and
ATTN off. Calibration sets a 50uV signal to S9 and a 1uV to S2-S3. See this in
the Calibration Procedures section of the manual (p51 in my 2009 version).

I’m pretty sure the K3 has an S-meter absolute mode that adjusts the S-meter
reading when preamps and/or attenuators are turned on.
The KX3 is supposed to have that mode, but it is not implemented. From the
manual errata:
"Not implemented: S-meter absolute mode (MENU:SMTR MD); addressing of
Does that also apply to the K3?

Greg,
The KX3 is designed around having the preamp on most of the time.

I have noticed with my KX3 that the S-Meter is not calibrated that is 50
microvolts (-73 dBm) at the antenna connector equals a S9 signal only when the
preamp is turned on. Is this normal and the way the KX3 is designed?
I thought it might be with the preamp off.
