Greetings,
In my quest to find a low profile antenna, I've looked at a lot of
possibilities. I was curious if anyone has and experience with the MFJ
1786 loop antenna.
...
Thanks and 73,

Keep in mind that reports of dx contacts on low power are useless for
comparing one antenna with another. Some Old-timers may remember working
stations with a low-cost dummy load (a lightbulb) years ago.
I built a loop antenna out of copper pipe some years ago, and it worked
fine.
I suggest that a dipole cut for 1/2 wavelength at the desired operating
frequency is likely to work better. Small antennas have higher loss.
My mobile antenna is small, too, and is probably only about 10%
efficient on 40 meters, but I have no trouble working lots of folks even
though the 200 watts I put in to the antenna results in radiating only
perhaps 20 watts.
So, if you have the room, put up a larger antenna. If you want portable,
consider a Buddipole. If circumstances dictate that the MFJ or Alexloop
is the best thing to use regardless of low efficiency, go for it!
cheers,
Glen, KG0T
