[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2026-02-07 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

Most of the week was sunny and mild.  Today it is foggy and wet.
More normal weather for February.  The sun has had an active week and it
is not done yet.  More flares, another CME on the way.  The large
sunspot group in the middle of the sun exploded in size.  6 X class
flares so far, I expect it to send a few more CMEs at us.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2026-01-17 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

It has been a sunny, mild week.  Much less rain than normal; less
fog too.  I have been able to see Jupiter rising in the east after
sunset.  I took a walk today to explore the SE corner of my property.
Some storm damage along the property line where new growth meets my
older growth forest.  Lots of spiders, but few webs; they are
'parachuting' around.

The sun was almost bare on Monday.  Today the sunspot number is over
100 with a few threatening areas.  Solar wind is coming in at around 700
km/s.  There are aurora showing up at high latitudes.  Spot number 4341
was flaring before it crossed the limb.  Now it is simply threatening.
Tomorrow we can use my antennas to check the propagation.

I woke up in the middle of the night and could not get back to sleep.  I
grabbed my laptop and woke it up too.  The sky was clear so my net
connection was good.  I pulled up websdr.org to find an open band.  I
logged onto a link to Half Moon Bay and switched to 40 meters.  Once I
found an ongoing QSO I flipped back to watching hummingbirds in Panama.
The CW was coming in while blue and green birds were competing for spots
on their feeder.

Then I thought about describing what I was doing to my dad.  He was a
radio amateur in the early 1930s so knew his code.  He later used that
skill on B17s and B24s as the radio man.  Here I was listening to CW
with a computer on my lap to stations from an antenna in another state.
As I was trying to frame a description for him I thought about the
connection.

My laptop is running a waterfall displaying the whole forty meter band
inside of a browser.  I am picking one signal out of that. My laptop is
talking to my access point wirelessly.  The AP connects to a switch and
then to my router which connects to the wireless dish on my roof.  This
connects to the top of the mountain which relays my signal to Hillsboro
where the signal goes into the net.  The signal flows from Hillsboro to
Half Moon Bay via the net.  If that station is hooked directly to the
net the next connection is his antenna.  That antenna is receiving the
two operators in QSO I mentioned earlier.

So, in order: laptop to AP - two antennas; WiFi dish to top of mountain
- two antennas; WiFi connection from mountain to Hillsboro - two more
antennas; then the Half Moon Bay station's antenna wirelessly connected
to two other antennas of those ops in QSO.  If the Half Moon Bay station
is connected to the net directly the antenna total is = 9.  How could I
have ever explained this to my dad before his eyes glazed over?

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2026-01-10 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

It was a gray week, much of it spent at the dew point.  The dense
fog blocks my net access; enough so to be annoying.  This prompted me to
build a web server on my network.  Makes site maintenance much simpler.
I can watch my pages open quickly, as if I had a fantastic connection.
This helped me edit my Lorentz force page.  If you are interested in how
an electron moves in a mixed magnetic electric field follow the link below.

The sun tossed a CME our way, and then another.  They may join to
form a more powerful cloud.  The fog, and my distance from the magnetic
north pole limit my view.  But there may be some aurora tonight.  This
will roil the ionosphere.  So, as ever, expect a variety of QSB
tomorrow.  And a mix of random sounds.  Let's test propagation again.

Don't let the link's name concern you.  I used the explosion metaphor to
generate my electron clouds.  However, with a decent color palette I'm
sure I could create some interesting fireworks displays too.  Currently
the palette is for black body radiation: black to red to yellow to
white.  Good for illustrating differences in temperature, not for fireworks.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2026-01-03 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

There was less rain this week.  After the deluge of last week this
was easy to achieve.  However, there was sun.  Hours of it; unseasonable
sunny :)  Good thing the rain has returned.  There were a few minutes of
snow flakes.  None of them got to the ground, but I saw them falling.

We may get hit by two CMEs in succession or combination, depends on
the timing.  Enough to cause a G2 class storm.  I would expect QRN and
QSB, but, then I always do and am pleasantly surprised when I am wrong.
The only way to truly test propagation is to open the box and see if the
cat is still alive.

2025-12-27 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

It was a mostly foggy week, maybe five minutes of raking sunlight.
The mountain is in the way for much of the day, but it's hard to tell
with all the storms.  Lots of rain.  Buckets. Today it snowed for a few
minutes, then back to rain.

The sun has more spots this week.  However, the larger ones are not
the most active.  One on the eastern limb flared earlier today.  4321
was forecast to flare but it hasn't done so yet. Currently it is in a
very good location to affect the earth.

Hi Kevin, This is Al Montoye W8RBF from Michigan. I’ve been on the
reflector email list for some time. I’ve tried to check in a few times but
have been successful only once on 20m. A good friend, John Gibson NO8V,
told me about the net several years ago so I occasionally tune in. I
usually look at your contacts list on Sunday evening to see who checked in
and NO8V is usually there. He looked forward to that QSO every week.
Sadly I must report that John passed away this week at age 90. He was a
beloved physics professor at Alma College and a mentor to countless hams.
His wife Jean and two children and their families survive him.

Good Evening,

I took advantage of the rare sunny day to take a hike.  Even though
it was mild there were no spider webs and few birds.  I found many signs
the deer had been out before me.  No elk sign though, I think one of
their hunting seasons is still open.  The stormy week brought a great
deal of rain.  Snow is in the forecast but not quite low enough for me.
By the time it reaches my elevation it will be slush or rain.  I have
another 12 days.

We are in a stream of solar wind.  The noise floor rose with steady
hissing and other odd sounds.  QSB should be moderate and varied.  The
forty meter net will be after dark for everyone east of me, plus a few
to the west :)  I expect the band to be changing from the beginning of
the net until its end.  40 meters has been working lately, we can test
it again tomorrow.

Good Evening,

There were moments of sunshine this week.  Mostly sun beams just
after sunrise and just before sunset.  The rest of the time it was
cloudy, foggy and rainy.  I saw a movement outside this window
yesterday.  Not a bird, it was a vole.  It spent about fifteen minutes
harvesting lichen from a fir trunk.  Food or bedding material?  Probably
both, lichen is nutritious, deer love it.  It also insulates.

The sun is covered.  Mostly by one large sunspot group.  It was
spewing ions as it passed over the sun's limb but has been quiet since
then.  Lots of energy is tied up waiting to burst.  It will take another
four or five days before it is not aimed in our direction.  Currently
solar flux is high; we are in a stream of solar wind.

I have taught my fireworks they are matter: they have mass, and take up
space.  The former lets them be affected by gravity fields.  The latter
counts when they hit either the earth or the moon in this simulation:

http://bacona.design/fireworks.html

My next step is to give them electrical charge and teach them about
magnetic fields.  Those particles which hit the earth will interact in
the ionosphere.  The Lorentz force equation will change their
velocities.  Ions moving around in a magnetic field create an electric
field.  Maybe one day I'll take that step too.

2025-11-29 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

Yesterday I read, "After three days blowing faster than 700 km/s,
the solar wind is slowing down.  Intermittent G1-class geomagnetic
storms registered on Nov. 25-27 will now subside, setting the stage for
a quiet weekend."  I checked spaceweather.com again today, "A
potentially dangerous sunspot is emerging over the sun's southeastern
limb.  Yesterday, while it was still partially eclipsed by the edge of
the sun, it produced an impulsive M6-class solar flare.  A pulse of
extreme ultraviolet radiation from this flare ionized Earth's upper
atmosphere, producing a minor shortwave radio blackout over the South
Pacific Ocean.  Radio transmissions at frequencies below 20 MHz 'browned
out' around 22:22 UTC on Nov. 28th."  Expect the unexpected :)

I awoke to clear, cold, sunny skies today.  It has been foggy and
stormy all week.  A few sunny days will be nice.  A last chance to prune
things back before the snow falls.  I have not heard heavy equipment
hauling trucks this week.  They must have it all their gear in place.
In a week or two there will be a stream of log trucks of fir, cedar, and
hemlock logs on their way through Vernonia.  Big news: Banks, Oregon now
has TWO stop lights.  Wow.

Good Evening,

The sun has had a busy week tossing CMEs at us.  The ionosphere is
roiled.  We are due for another ion injection sometime tomorrow.  It
will be interesting to see how propagation changes during and between nets.

It has been foggy during the day and cloudy at night.  I was not
able to see the auroral display this week.  Multiple showers have
flattened the bracken fern and stripped trees of leaves. Heavy rain also
removes dead fir needles.  Mushrooms are popping up all over, feasting
on previous layers of fern parts, leaves, and fir needles.  Nutrients

Good Evening,

I hiked the southern edge of the property to take advantage of the sunny
day. Alders have self pruned; in some cases the entire tree. They don't like
to lose direct sunlight. Now there is open space where the elk and deer bed
down. Ferns have fallen due to the cold. This let me see the ground and avoid
mountain beaver holes. I stepped on a hoof hardened elk trail and thought I
was on stable ground. A few steps later my left foot was stuck a foot below
ground level in one of their burrows. It took a minute to get free; good thing
they had loosened the soil.

The sun is quite active. At least two CMEs have hit the earth's ionosphere.
More are due in succession. Spaceweather.com reports we are currently in a
geomagnetic storm. QSB should be quite interesting tomorrow. Hopefully the
noise will not overwhelm our signals. We shall see. Note the time change:
local time remains the same (in most parts of the US) while the universal time
changes. One day we may shed ourselves of Ben's innovation, the US may also
turn metric.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2025-11-08 Thread W3FPR via Elecraft
The US did try to turn metric many years ago, without real success. The
auto industry has gone to many metric sized bolts and nuts, but I still
need both metric and US sized wrenches - it makes my toolbox much heavier!

As far as time goes, My preference would be to stay on Daylight Saving
Time, but many will not agree depending on which side to our time zone
that we are located.  I personally prefer the extended evening light and
wake up much after sunrise.  Here in the middle on North Carolina, on
Standard Time, it gets dark enough to turn the lights on at 4 PM, and
the sun wakes me at about 7AM right now.  I am not a 'morning person'
and am retired so I don't have reason to get up early in the morning.
Those further West in the time zone will have other opinions.  Those
further North have more twilight time than we do here, so 'it all depends'.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2025-11-01 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

The week had a little sun, a lot of rain, with enough wind to kill
the power.  It has calmed down.  Fall colors are past their peak.
Loggers are moving heavy equipment for the rainy season harvesting.
Helicopters to move Christmas trees will start soon. The deer and elk
have vanished due to all the activity.  Hunters driving by on the hour
may have something to do with their absence.

The sun has very few spots, all of them are quiet.  Flux is still
high.  One spot on the back side of the sun is sending a series of
CMEs.  None of them are aimed at us.  Next week they will be pointed in
our direction.  Day length and sun angle are changing quickly.  Last
week twenty meters worked to the Atlantic Ocean as well as Portland,
Oregon.  The forty meter net is getting closer to local sunset.
Propagation will change quicker than it did last week.

Good Evening,

There was steady rain and fog all week.  The sun has tossed another
CME our way.  However, it is not due until Monday.  The current crop of
sunspots are stable and quiet.  Solar flux is still fairly high, expect
static hiss.  QSB may be weaker than last week.  Cross your fingers here.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2025-10-18 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

Autumn is proceeding.  Leaves falling allow more sun to hit the
forest floor.  This brings the mushrooms out, then the birds which fluff
up the leaf, needle, and fern clutter.  I noticed an oddly colored bird
in a tree.  Then I recognized him; he was not in the usual location, you
don't normally see Varied Thrush from below.  When the forest floor
dries out between showers flocks of them work in expanding rings
fluffing up the forest clutter. Robins come along in a second wave to
take advantage of any exposed multi-legged creatures.  The mushrooms are
uncovered too.

The sun is quite active this week.  A series of CMEs have either
hit, or are still on the way.  There should be aurora tonight but cloud
cover won't let me check.  There will be periods of G1 level solar
storms over the next day.  Expect a moderate level of noise and a goodly
amount of QSB, nothing unusual :) Comet Lemmon is near its closest
approach to earth.  Binoculars will help but are not required.  The
solar storms are shaking its tail.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2025-10-18 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

Cool temperatures with intermittent showers created mushrooms.  I
saw yellow and white Chanterelle caps pushing through layers of fir
needles.  There were quail near the road with grouse through out the
forest.  More leaves have fallen so you can see farther.  Fog dropped
from tree top level to near the ground, then slowly rose again; the
trees rain more or less accordingly.

Compared to last week the sun is almost bare of sunspots. However,
we are due for a stream of high speed solar wind.  That should liven
things up a bit.  The sun angle will affect the forty meter net.  That
net will begin about an hour before dusk.  By the end of the net the sun
will have dropped below the local horizon. Propagation may change
quickly.  We will find out tomorrow.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2025-10-18 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

It was a rainy, cool, and foggy week.  Right after last week's forty
meter net I walked along the driveway.  I'm not sure who flushed first
but I was met by an explosion of California Quail mixed with a few
Ruffed Grouse.  Their favorite berries are ripe. During a break in the
rain later in the week I saw one, then many, Turkey Vultures ridge
soaring their way south.

The sun is unsettled.  There is a small CME due mid-week. Solar flux
is up, creating green and even pink aurora.  If twenty meters is not
blasted by noise, propagation there should be OK. Forty meters will keep
improving since the sun is moving quickly southward.  But early fall
thunderstorms will blast away a few characters.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2025-09-27 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

The sun is covered with sun spots but the most active area is just
crossing the limb.  Flux is high and there were a few minor CMEs this
week.  QSB should be varied which may prove useful for the weakest signals.

There is less smoke in the air.  A week of rain starts tomorrow.
Hopefully that will put an end to the many fires in the Northwest.  Gray
Jays and Juncos are migrating downward.  They live in the canopy all
summer so their calls are not uncommon. You just don't see them very
often.  The Steller's Jays are a bit put out because they live down here
all year; their range just shrank.

Good Evening,

The sun has slowly repopulated with spots.  Currently there are a
number of large groups.  One of them may send something our way.  We had
a magnetic storm earlier in the week so the ionosphere is awake.  Expect
the usual QSB.

Smoke has kept the air hazy all week.  Fog and a little rain clears
it out for a day, but both the Willamette and the Columbia River valleys
keep funneling it from the forest fires to the ocean.  Hopefully
tonight's forecast rain will help the fire fighters and damp down a few
of those fires.

Good Evening,

The sun has few spots this week.  They are currently stable. The
solar flux is still above 100.  QSB should be less deep, you never can
tell.  Noise may even be lower.  Again, this is a mystery.  Tomorrow we
can test twenty meters and then a little later try forty meters.

More leaves have fallen, the forest is changing color and starting
to smell like fall.  Dense fog most nights has cleared the majority of
the smoke from the air.  Sunsets are less red, mid-day sun is closer its
G2 spectrum.  My begonias are red again :)  I have not seen an elk or a
deer in about a month.  I have been seeing bow and black powder hunters
cruising by around dawn and again at dusk.

When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the
planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a
perfunctory affair.  The idea becomes a machine that makes the art.

2025-09-06 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

Thunder started about 2 AM; it is rare around here.  A cold front
moved through with rain, wind, and lightning.  The power stayed on but I
unplugged all of my antennas.  Normally thunderstorms stay in the
Columbia River valley and move around me.  This one was closer.  I need
to remember to hook up the antennas again.

Hummingbirds have left my area, but I can watch some interesting
species here:
https://www.allaboutbirds.org/cams/panama-hummingbird-feeders/ For the
last few days there have been more species passing through.  Some of
them are pretty large.

The sun was very active this week.  A CME should hit some time
tomorrow.  There are fewer spots at the moment.  Early in the week the
sun was full of them.  4207 may send us another flare or two before it
passes over the limb.  If it were not so foggy I may see some aurora.
As it is the fog is slowing my web connection to a crawl; the top of the
mountain is in the clouds.

2025-08-30 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

It was a hazy, warm week.  I can't smell the smoke, the fires are
too distant, but it makes the sun dark orange.  Sunsets have been orange
to red for the last few weeks.  Makes the forest into an odd shade of
gray.  More leaves are changing color and falling.  I'm not sure if it
is from the smoke or a sign of an early fall.  Rodents have been very
active.  The hummingbirds disappeared within the last two weeks.

The sun has many large, complex sunspot groups.  A few of them are
quite active.  There may be M to X class flares tomorrow. Propagation
could be challenging.  I expect a number of thunder storms to affect
signals.  Sounds like a normal Sunday net :)

2025-08-23 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

The sunspot number has dropped below 100.  Solar flux is still high
at 121 sfu.  There have been a few CMEs from spots on the back side of
the sun.  Those spots will be facing us later in the week.  However,
tomorrow there should be a window of opportunity. We can work our way
through the flux and flares and summer storms.

Summer storms have been infrequent.  If it were not for the nightly
fog the fire danger would be quite high.  Loggers begin at 3 AM, I could
set a clock by them.  The strange thing is the unloaded log trucks pass
by my house, while the loaded ones do not.  They must have cut another
route off the mountain.

Between the deer and the rabbits the area has been cleared of salal
leaves.  They retain their ripe fruit though.  Snow berries are also
ripe so there will be either Spruce or Ruffed Grouse here soon.  They
add a little excitement to the day.  If it is windy they flush only when
you are right on top of them.  But it is nothing like having a covey of
quail explode around you :)

Good Evening,

Three inches of rain fell over two days this week.   There was no
runoff.  The slow, steady rain soaked right in.  You could hear the
forest sigh.  Fire danger is much lower.  One doe has been browsing the
backyard each evening at dusk.  Oregon grape is ripe but I think she
only eats their leaves.

The sun grew more active this week.  We are in an ion storm now.
Another CME is on the way.  Sunspot 4168 is unstable and in a great

high so there will be lightning discharge mixed with particle noise.

Fire danger has risen.  This morning I awoke to the sound of rain
which keeps the forest moist.  It was quite foggy so I'm not sure if it
was falling from the sky or from the trees.  Later in the week there
will be rain showers so I will know its source. The Yellow Warblers were
only around for one day last week. Normally they are here for a week or
two.  Maybe they're looking for a warmer spot.

Good Evening,

It was another cool, foggy week.  Yellow Warblers are passing
through, eating fresh seeds and flowers.  I noticed a flock of them
causing a bush to shake.  The bees did not seem to mind, but the
butterflies hung on for dear life or shook free.

Sunspots are balanced above and below the solar equator.  They are
stable but a small CME is due some time tomorrow.  As ever I expect
summer storm noise and QSB; without them there would be no challenge :)
Let's test the ionosphere again tomorrow.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2025-07-19 Thread kevin via Elecraft

Good Evening,

The week began hot and dry.  Then nighttime fog returned. Nights in
the mid 50s, sunny days in the low 70s.  The added moisture is boosting
berry production.  In the last week I ate wild strawberries,
huckleberries, thimble berries, black raspberries, and a few salmon
berries.  The forest holds a variety of scents.  Lots of bird, bee, and
butterfly activity around the new flowers.  A flock of immature Gray
jays followed me during my hike today.  I'm not sure if the flock
remained the same or if they worked in relays.

   Our sun is covered with sunspot groups.  Some large and unstable;
most less so.  Solar flux is high so we have plenty of ions to bounce
signals around.  Hopefully they will bounce in the right direction.  I
expect QSB will be moderate to high this week.  Summer storms seem to
affect the forty meter net more than the twenty meter one.  It takes a
while for thunderstorms to mature.

Good Evening,

Summer is here.  Fewer foggy mornings with more warm, sunny days.  A
doe in her red summer coat spent an hour nibbling salal and bramble
leaves.  She walked a few feet into the ferns and disappeared.  Many
transient birds are passing through.  I hear their calls for a day or
two and then they're gone.

The sun has grown new spots.  Active ones.  There is also an
equatorial hole in the sun's atmosphere spewing a stream of high speed
ions.  We are under a G1 level geomagnetic storm watch. Should be noisy
with all manner of QSB.  I'll know better by this time tomorrow.

Good Evening,

There were more warm sunny days this week with less fog.  The
lavender foxgloves are blooming beside orange Columbia Lilies. The
bracken ferns are almost fully unrolled, standing up to ten feet tall.
The sword fern are bright green covering much of the forest floor.  New
leaves have not yet been nibbled by insects; they are present in beds of
foam, or a leaf curling in on itself.

The sun has fewer sunspots, none of them are currently unstable.
There was a CME earlier in the week.  The flux level is still elevated
so there will be a steady hiss.  Propagation may be OK this week.  Let's
find out tomorrow.

2025-06-21 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

The sun has been quite active all week.  Sunspot number 4114 flared
a number of times, causing RF black outs around the world. That spot
will be geoeffective for a few more days; maybe it will flare again
tomorrow.  But I will work through the noise to find you.  QSB can boost
a signal long enough to verify a call sign.

Spring is holding on.  Currently it is 52 F with rain and fog.  Much
like the previous four months :)  But it is officially summer.  A number
of new birds have shown up.  I heard the first Varied Thrush of the
year.  I saw a Pileated Woodpecker chasing a Steller's Jay.  The
woodpecker was quite annoyed, I don't envy the jay.

2025-06-14 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

The chilly weather has made the hummingbird feeder quite popular.
The Black Headed Grosbeak moved back to where I first heard him three
years ago.  His call has better projection from the higher perch.  The
jays are no longer a menace to themselves or others; their flying skills
are much improved.

The sun is growing more speckled.  A minor CME hit earlier in the
week causing another geomagnetic storm.  While this storm is abating
more flare activity is probable.  As ever, propagation depends on the
sun, timing, skill, antennas, and luck.  Let's test each characteristic
tomorrow.  < cross fingers here />

2025-06-07 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

Cool, sunny days have progressed to warm, sunny days.  The Black
Headed Grosbeak is back, but using a different tree as home base.
Larger butterflies are visiting fresh flowers.  The honeysuckle vines
east of me are attracting hummingbirds too. They add another scent to
the environment.  The bracken fern are a month away from their full
growth.  Many are over eight feet tall; their tops have not unrolled.
In two to three years they will be feeding my trees.

The sun has calmed down.  The sunspot number is low, while the flux
is still above 100.  Multiple solar storms have hit us during the last
week.  The ionosphere should be in prime condition as long as the flares
have abated.  Maybe tomorrow the bands will be favorable.

I just remembered an anniversary: the Elecraft CW Net is 23 years

Good Evening,

A few days of sunshine, with temperatures into the low 70s, made the
forest much greener.  The intervening cool, rainy days helped too.  The
ferns are about eight feet tall, just beginning to unroll.  A wave of
new birds are adding their calls to the day.  Salmon berries are
starting to turn orange.  Wild strawberries are blooming.

The sun has been active this week, sending us ions in a variety of
ways.  We are awaiting the CME aimed directly at us from sunspot 4100.
It will cause a severe geomagnetic storm sometime on June 1st.  You
never know what will happen nor when. You may or may not be able to hear
me.  I may hear a wall of noise and little else.  However, that is why
we run these nets: to report propagation each week.

2025-05-24 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

A wet, cool week has been followed by a very pleasant, sunny day.
Many flowers are blooming, more birds are moving into the undergrowth,
while the biting flies remain few.  The Pileated woodpeckers have been
busy creating rectangular holes in the cedar trees.  I found many of the
old openings being used by the jays for storage.  The larger openings
are a good fit for Saw whet owls.

The sun has more spots this week; all are stable.  Solar flux is
still fairly high.  There were a few flares earlier in the week but no
CMEs are due to strike us.  However, Mercury is currently getting hit by
one,  Hopefully conditions will be better than they have been for the

2025-05-17 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

The ferns are now tall enough to hide a feeding elk.  I noticed this
while standing on the front deck.  I said something to a passing
hummingbird when the facing hillside sprouted big brown heads.  First
one, then many, then even more.  There must have been forty of them when
they all departed stage right.  After the ferns are fully unrolled their
passing will only produce a wave in the undergrowth.

The sun may not have a lot of spots but one group keeps flaring.  We
are currently in a geomagnetic storm stirred by a passing CME.  There
may be more on the way due to the exuberance of sunspot #4087.
Conditions could be better than they have been over the last few weeks.
I imagine they will be different and let it go at that :)

Good Evening,

I took a walk today, before the ground is hidden by the now five
foot tall ferns.  There were enough no-see-ums to notice. The forest
floor is quite green with new growth, no stick tights or burrs are
mature.  More birds too, the hummingbird feeder drained so quickly I
thought there was a leak.  Then I found four new males jousting with the
one who has been here for weeks.  A Pileated Woodpecker has been
scouting the property for a new home.  It drops below freezing each
night, but it is warm enough each day to attract turkey vultures.  They
clean up after the mountain lions.  False Solomon's Seal and flowering
dogwood are in bloom.

The ominous sunspot from the last two weeks is passing beyond the
limb.  Maybe it will flare on the other side.  The solar wind has been
strong all week.  I expect a steady hiss with less QSB than last week.
Hopefully propagation will not be deterred.

I am modeling the motion of a charged particle through a magnetic field,
by implementing the Lorentz Force equation.  Only the magnetic portion
for now, the electric part comes later.  Using vectors makes the code
more readable and compact.

This is a rough draft of a streak pattern to display charged particle
motion:

void streak( void )
    {
struct spark F;  // Force field
    float q = 1.6e-19;   // Electron charge Ampere*second
float Me = 9.1e-31;  // Electron mass in kilograms
struct vt ptC;   // Screen point
struct pt Fm;    // Magnetic component of Lorentz Force in
Newtons

    struct pt Vv = vector( 5e5, 0.0, 0.0 ); // 500 km/second
    float dt = 1e-2; // Seconds

    F.B = vector( 0.0, 1e-5, 0.0 ); // Vertical 1 Gauss field
    Fm = vecMult( vecCrossVec( Vv, F.B ), q );  // Magnetic component
of the Lorentz Force

    for(int i=0; i    SelectObject( bkhdc, pn[ ray[ i ].col ] ); // Choose preset
pen color

    if(( ray[i].X.x > 100.0 ) && ( ray[i].X.x < 400.0 ))  // In the
field

    {  // F/m = a
    ray[i].X = vecPlusVec( ray[i].X, vecMult( vecDiv( Fm, Me ),
dt*dt ));

    Vv = vecPlusVec( Vv, vecMult( vecDiv( Fm, Me ), dt );
    }
    else
    ray[ i ].X = vecPlusVec( ray[ i ].X, Vv ); // Move ray to
the right

    if( ray[i].X.x > 500.0 ) ray[i].X.x = -100.0;  // Arbitrary
endpoint choices

ptC = perspective( matrixMultiply( Transform, matTvec( Rot,
ray[i].X ), View ) );

    Ellipse( bkhdc, ptC.x-1, ptC.y+1, ptC.x+1, ptC.y-1 );
    }
SelectObject( bkhdc, hpen );   // Restore
standard black pen

    }

When this works I will generalize it to animate charged particles in a
toroidal magnetic field.

Good Evening,

It has been a snowy, wet week.  Gray too.  The sun has a good number
of sunspots but they are stable.  No CMEs on the way. There is strong
flux.  I expect some noise but lower QSB than we have had lately.
Conditions could be OK to good.  Let's find out tomorrow.

2025-03-11 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

The sun tossed a mix of fast a slow streams of solar wind at us.
That should upset our ionosphere in many ways.  I doubt the bands will
be as quiet as they were last week.  I expect a wide variety of QSB
types with a similar mix of noises.

Take note of the time "change".  Net times are set by my daily
schedule, not by conditions.  That is why they are always at the same
local time (except in parts of the world and US which do not observer
Daylight Savings Time).  This change also lets me work different areas
seasonally.

2025-03-01 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

It was sunny and warm this week.  Warm enough to trigger biting
flies to hatch.  The forecast is for a return to cold, wet, and snow.
If their population is lower it is easier to be outside doing chores.  I
can dream.

There were a few solar flares early in the week.  No CMEs are due.
Solar flux is down a little too.  Maybe conditions will be good.  Sunset
is later so it won't affect forty meters as much as it has been.  That
means the time change is due :)  Next week in fact ( I just checked ).

Good Evening,

The sun is covered in sunspots; there are no CMEs on the way. Solar
flux is still high so there will be a steady hiss.  QSB should be less
vigorous.  We can test both of these hypotheses tomorrow.

The end of February has brought more seasonal weather.  The snow has
been replaced with rain and fog.  Lots of fog.  It is hard to tell when
it stops raining because the trees drip for hours.

2025-02-08 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

It snowed most of the week.  Today the sun came out and the
temperature rose.  Then it got noisy as the snow fell again; in large
clumps.  A doe is eating her way across the back acres avoiding the
falling snow.  The temperature is supposed to drop quite a bit over the
next few days.  She needs the energy.

The sun has been flaring this week.  A stream of solar wind is
headed our way; expect some hissing.  If you are not otherwise occupied
you are invited to join the nets.  The twenty meter net will be over
before 3:30 PM PST.  The forty meter net should fit into another null
point :)

2025-02-01 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

There will be a CME near miss on February 3rd.  The sun was almost
spotless yesterday.  The unbroken streak was saved by a large spot
rotating into view.  Today there are more spots showing.  Those spots
are ready for more flare activity.  Solar flux is up too; I expect a
high level of hissing tomorrow.

There was a light dusting of snow this morning.  It melted and has
not been replaced.  The forecast was for four inches.  There is some
precipitation but it is too warm to snow.  Maybe tonight and into next

2025-01-25 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

After a sunny week there are more sunny days ahead.  Frost each
morning followed by a thaw.  Ice flowers are blooming from the frost
line interface.  One doe spent the last few days eating her way around
the house.  Every few hours she would appear out a different window.

The sun tossed a few CMEs our way but somehow they got lost, or
missed.  The prediction of X class flares was also incorrect.  The sun
has potential but we may have a quiet(ish) spell.  Once I clear out some
underbrush I will be able to construct a few antennas.  The ones I have
up now have lasted for three years; a new record :)  Normally they last
about a year before the trees and snow and wind and flying branches rip
them apart.

Good Evening,

It was a sunny, crisp week.  I took advantage of the dry spell to
cut up a few downed trees.  Using a chainsaw is a full body work out.
It focuses the mind too; the swath of rapidly moving teeth keeps your
attention.  A few more hours of cutting and I'll have made a dent.

The solar forecast is for flares; 70% probability.  No CMEs are on
the way.  Solar flux is over 200, there should be a fair amount of
hissing going on.  Venus and Saturn just found an opening in the trees.
I can see them as I type.  I hope to hear you tomorrow.

I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.

When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done,
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

Tweaking the competition between a herbivore's camouflage gene and a
carnivore's eye sight gene is similar to biasing a single stage in an
amplifier.  First move the signal into the active region, then return
some of the output back to the input to stabilize things.  Clipping
throws the ecosystem into large population swings, with the carnivores
eventually dying off.  A more equitable competition will calm things down.

Good Evening,

It was a pleasant week.  Some rain, some fog, some wind, and some
sun.  No snow, that's for tomorrow.  Gray Jays are attentive, it may
have something to do with the food I give them.  I don't think it's my
lectures on trees.  The bush, which was covered with flowers earlier
this year, is now full of tiny, seed eating birds.  The squirrels await
the fallout below.

The sun looks almost quiet.  A lower rate of flux with no really
active spots should lessen QSB.  It will be dark by the time the 40
meter net begins.  Propagation will be changing by the moment.  This
will be true until mid-January.  I could move the net earlier by 30
minutes if necessary.  In any case we can test things tomorrow and see
how it goes.

Good Evening,

Each morning has had dense fog causing the trees to rain on their
roots.  Around noon the fog falls below me and the sun comes out.
Chilly, humid, and sunny - moss is glowing during its haploid phase.
Elk and deer trails are far from the road due to heavy traffic.

The sun has a number of active sunspot groups.  No CMEs are due but
the flux level is elevated.  There should be a moderate amount of hiss
with medium levels of QSB.  So fairly normal compared to the last six
months.  Sunset is now thirty minutes before the 40 meter net.  It will
be fun to monitor how propagation changes over the next few months.

Good Evening,

It was a good week.  The weather was mostly inclement so rebuilding
three computers and my network was a good way to stay busy.  Now, after
moving terabytes of data, there is some organization to a system which
just grew.  Surprisingly I am now running the same OS on each
workstation/server.  Today it was sunny so I took a break from the dust
and spent it in the forest.

The sun has reawakened from a short nap.  There are more sunspots
with greater activity.  Solar flux is up with a few aurora for northern
folks.  No CMEs are due, though there was an RF black out yesterday.
The ionosphere should still be unstable from that so I expect deeper QSB
than last week.  However, that will not deter me from trying to find an
open frequency and call CQ.  I'm sure I'll find a few of you.

Good Evening,

The sun is taking a break.  This respite may be short lived due to
the unstable sunspot AR3886.  The sunspot number dropped to 71, with
flux at 147 sfu.  I expect less hiss and less QSB.  But AR3886, or a
large filament of magnetism, could trigger an RF black out.  Nonetheless
I will try to find open frequencies and call CQ.

There was a day of sun this week, it felt odd :)  Currently it is
windy with heavy rain.  No branches are flying so the antennas are
safe.  Snow level will drop tomorrow.  It may or may not snow here.  Or
streaks of slush will fall.  Either I'm losing track of days or it is

Good Evening,

It has been sunny and cool the last few days.  Now the wet weather
is back for the coming week.  Frost has turned most of the leaves their
respective colors.  The bracken fern ranges from green to gold to brown,
depending on its exposure.  The Gray jays have migrated out of the
canopy down to the lower branches.  The Steller's jays are finding more
peaceful locations elsewhere.  A few nearby owls start calling each
evening at dusk.

The sun has a new string of very active spots.  One CME just missed,
but its effects are being felt.  There were numerous RF black outs this
week.  X class flares were popping off regularly though only the
previously mentioned CME occurred.  I expect those active spots are not
done yet.  There may be an RF black out tomorrow but it cannot affect
both nets.  Please notice the seasonal time change.

plot 'dt.dat' using 1:4 title 'Carnivore' with line, 'dt.dat' using 1:3
title 'Herbivore' with line, 'dt.dat' using 1:2 title 'Plant' with line

But this is fancy.  The default settings can work just fine. plot
'dt.dat' using 1:4 is enough.

plot reads the dt.dat file and displays whatever is in column 1 as the X
coordinate, and column 4 data as the Y coordinate. Stringing commands
together, with commas in between, gives me a three value chart.  If you
don't specify line you get the default icons at each data point.  Kind
of yucky for what I am doing.  The other bit is title 'Carnivore' to
label the chart's legend.

demos.  I have used it for twenty years if I am not mistaken.  It has
been well maintained over that time.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2024-10-19 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

I am getting an early taste of the rainy season.  Mushrooms are
popping up all over.  The vine maple leaves have lost their color so the
Chanterelle are easy to spot.  Lots of elk movement; more so farther
away from the road.  A lot of their paths parallel the road, few cross
it.  This might have something to do with the many trucks filled with
hunters slowly scanning the forest.

The sun is very active.  Only one CME is headed our way, I think it
is due tomorrow. There are plenty of ions flying around of one flavor or
another.  There is also comet dust.  I think I will hear all manner of
interesting signals.  Hopefully one of them will be yours.

Good Evening,

The fir and cedar trees are changing color.  Old growth is dying
off, shedding needles in the wind.  Spiders are getting large, as are
their webs.  I collect them as I walk through the forest :)

2024-10-05 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

It dropped to 32 F the last few nights.  Lots of leaves are changing
color.  I walked around the property locating game trails.  A lot of elk
sign with a few shredded trees.  In some places the ground is carved
from many hooves.  It took a while but I found young chanterelle
mushrooms.  Fallen vine maple leaves are very similar in color.
However, once you find the first mushroom others appear; kind of like elk.

The sun reawakened.  There have been three X class flares so far
this week, if I have counted right.  Two CMEs on the way - one of them
hit today, while the other is due tomorrow.  I expect a steady hiss from
the enhanced solar wind, and a wide variety of QSB from the ringing
ionosphere.

Good Evening,

First fog, then rain cleared out last week's smoke. Temperatures
dropped but it was nice to breath fresh air again. The sun, when you can
see it, is no longer a shade of orange; it's yellow again.

Speaking of the sun it has a new sunspot group which sent an X4.5
class flare at us earlier today.  For the next week we will be in the
path of any CMEs from it.  The latest projection is for the cycle to
peak sometime next year.  Currently there is no sign of any slowdown.

Good Evening,

It has been a hazy, smokey week.  The sun is an odd shade of orange
which makes a green forest look gray.  It is very quiet too; usually
squirrels and birds make a little noise, not this week.  Some rain is on
the way.  Hopefully it will cross over the Cascades and douse a few
fires in Central Oregon.

Solar activity is going up.  High sunspot numbers with high solar

Good Evening,

Summer returned a few days ago.  Sunny and hot with temperatures
nearing 100 F.  If we had cicadas they would be buzzing.  The sun is a
deeper shade of orange due to haze from distant forest fires.  The birds
and squirrels are silent during the middle of the day during siesta time.

The sun has sent us another storm while producing more complex
sunspots.  3806 will dominate the week.  It may produce a few RF black

will add  noise too.  But, the sun is moving rapidly south; propagation

2024-08-24 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

Another cloudy, chilly week.  Foggy and wet too - it has rained
almost every day.  The temperature topped out at 46 F today.  I miss
sunny and warm summers; native Oregonians are in shorts while I wear a
jacket.  The doe and her fawns are frequent visitors.  I saw the ferns
shaking and one popped out for a moment.  Under better lighting I see
the fawns are both lightly speckled.  The coat of Black Tailed fawns
doesn't have the sharper contrast of a White Tailed fawn.

Our sun is relatively quiet for the moment.  Plenty of sunspots with
a high level of solar flux.  But, no CMEs are due for tomorrow.  We have
a CME gap :)  However, QSB should be moderate to high and summer storm
QRN prevalent.  Cycle 25 has not reached its peak; activity is still
growing.  Higher bands (17 to 10 m) are open for DX every now and then.
Hopefully lower bands will be open tomorrow too.

2024-08-10 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

It has been a hazy week.  The sun is still fairly yellow so the
smoke is not too thick.  Just persistent.  A cold front is due to pass
through, then the wind will come in off the Pacific.  I have seen a lot
of immature birds lately.  Second crop of Gray Jays.

The sun remains active.  So active it's hard to get a dit in
sideways.  The sunspot number is at 382 while the solar flux index is at
306.  The main problem is all of the sunspot flares.  They are sending
us a barrage of CMEs.  The stronger flares cause hour long RF black
outs.  Between those interruptions the higher bands should work well.

Good Evening,

After last week's cold weather the sun and warmth this week feels
good.  I haven't had to heat the house either.  The rain helped the
berry crops ripen.  Thimble berries, black raspberries, huckleberries,
and a few very late strawberries.  Salmon berry season has passed.

The sun is setting records.  Cycle 25 was forecast to be weak; it
isn't.  The sunspot number is at a 23 year high, it could go even
higher.  Summer storms will cause some noise but the frequent CMEs keep
the ionosphere unsettled.  Should be another interesting test tomorrow.

Good Evening,

It was a sunny, mild week.  Various predators have moderated the
insect population.  That, along with some breeze, makes it easier to sit
outside.  Helps when you are under a vehicle or up in a tree working on
antennas.  I do not miss the fire ants of Houston.  If you can't change
your oil quickly they find you and make life unpleasant.  At least the
Black Widows of Albuquerque kept to themselves.

The sun is very active.  The sunspot number is 212 while solar flux
levels have gone to 202.  A few small CMEs are due today and tomorrow.
There should be many types of noise and a variety of QSB modes.  May we
live in interesting times :)  It will be another test of ears and antennas.

Good Evening,

On Monday I noticed there were ripe salmon berries.  Gray jays tend
them closely but had missed a few days.  On Tuesday I saw, and heard, a
gray streak drop to the ground with a thump.  On Wednesday the thumping
continued on my roof.  Yesterday I saw an immature gray jay eating those
neglected salmon berries.  He was learning how to take off from a low,
inverted position.  He was successful about half of the time.

The sun is supposed to be quiet for a few days.  There are no CMEs

should allow the ionosphere to stabilize.  Lower QSB would be nice.
Stronger signals would be OK too.

Good Evening,

The sun hit us with another CME yesterday.  Solar flux dropped a
little, it is around 180 after a few days over 200.  If it were less
cloudy I would take my telescope out for a look at the many sunspots.
Maybe next week.

The mostly cloudy week has kept temperatures down.  A few scattered
showers and a few foggy mornings make the forest wet. Many shades of
green, when the sun comes out it glows.  All manner of bees are working
the berry flowers popping out.  Salmon berries are ripening but they're
not around long.  The jays eat them. Huckleberries are just starting,
they are a staple into October.

Good Evening,

It was a cool, sunny week.  The ferns are over eight feet tall so
they're nearly done growing.  During the warmest sunny days I found them
a home to many ladybugs.  As soon as it cools, or the sun goes behind a
cloud they are gone.  Red bugs against green ferns are easy to spot,
they must not taste very good.

The sun keeps tossing protons and electrons at us.  There may be
some satellite problems because the storm of protons is energetic enough
to bypass their shielding.  Bit flipping can cause the systems to reset
or go into a failure mode requiring remote resets.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2024-06-08 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

It has been a pleasant week.  A number of new birds arrived: a
female Black-Headed Grosbeak, a Yellow Warbler, a Gold Crowned Kinglet,
and a turkey vulture.  Those were only the ones who got my attention.  I
am sure there are many more since the forest is producing insects and
flowers.

The sun has not slowed down its activity.  A near X-class flare
today with others earlier in the week.  There are plenty of ions
available.  Now to find a moment between RF black outs.  QSB should be
deep and varied in frequency.  Late spring thunderstorms will add a
layer of static.

Please join us on (or near):

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2024-06-01 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

It was a cool, partly sunny week.  Temperatures were warm enough for
hummingbirds to actively defend the feeder.  New growth, a fresh crop of
insects, and drier weather brought many new birds.  I expect to see the
elk return to take advantage of the grass.

The sun is active; three X class flares so far have caused RF black
outs.  They have been arriving with an approximate 12 hour interval.  It
looks like we can slip both nets in between them. There will be no
shortage of ions to relay signals.  There will also be a wealth of QSB.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2024-05-25 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

It has been a chilly, wet week.  The cold weather has affected the
hummingbirds.  The males don't fight very much, not even a tail
display.  They just give each other angry glares as they feed.

The sun is a little less active.  We are between the most active
groups which last for multiple passes.  One of those is due on Monday if
I'm not mistaken.  Then we're back to X class flares, RF black outs,
with a chance of southerly aurora.  So, for a limited time there may be
poor to OK propagation.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2024-05-18 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

The sun remains quite active.  Solar flux is above 200 and the
sunspot number is over 160.  However, the large group from last week is
no longer facing our way so the CMEs should slow down for a while.
Hopefully there will be better propagation tomorrow than that of the
last few weeks.

The ferns are growing rapidly.  The bracken fern were only a foot
tall a week ago, now they are six feet and taller.  Just today I noticed
they are starting to unroll.  The forest is very green with new leaves.
New growth on the fir trees showed up today too.  Those deer will be
back soon to prune that growth from the lower branches.  The sprouting
sword fern are preparing new mats to keep sleeping deer above the wet
forest floor.

Good Evening,

Propagation ranged from abysmal to poor.  QSB was slow and
moderate.  Noise was quite low which is always a tip off.  Weather
reports were pleasant.  Spring is hinting at summer.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2024-05-11 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

The ongoing geomagnetic storm has dropped to G1.  Tomorrow they are
predicting another round at the G5 level.  Communications below 30 MHz
will probably be impaired.  Hopefully the two nets will be unaffected
during a lull between CMEs.

The snow from last week was replaced by a few days of 80 degrees.
The daffodils had an eight week run so they did pretty well.  I noticed
a tiny hummingbird this morning.  It took a few moments, processing a
stack of memories.  "The same thing happened last year."  The Anna's
Hummingbirds have returned with the heat. There are plenty of tiny
insects for them to eat.  Keeps them from eating me.

2024-05-04 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

It has been a cold, wet, snowy week.  My daffodils look fresh due to
the chill.  They last for weeks during the end of winter. Birds are
settling in.  A few woodpeckers are making homes.

The sun is very active.  Multiple CME hits and near misses, with
another due tomorrow.  A variety of flares blacked out RF too.  We may
be able to communicate tomorrow, or I could hear a steady roaring sound.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2024-04-28 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

Spring is progressing.  I finally saw the hummingbird which is
emptying the feeder.  I also saw a doe with a yearling eating their way
across the new undergrowth.  Their winter coats make them quite
visible.  They were back again today.  Then the doe found a dry spot
under a cedar tree and napped all afternoon. Around 5:30 she shook
herself and got back to eating.

The sun has been quite active this week.  Multiple CMEs were
created, some of them hitting the earth, some passing close by. The
ionosphere is well fed with ions and rather unstable. Conditions could
change quickly because more CMEs are due at any moment.  Propagation may
prove challenging.

2024-04-20 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

It was partly sunny and cool all week.  Currently it is windy.  My
view is much greener.  More flowers but no hummingbirds at the feeder.
It has stopped snowing so they should show up soon.  The daffodils are
all open with a few trilliums here and there.

The ionosphere is still be shaking after the pounding it took from
yesterday's CME.  A large sunspot group is sending a lot of ions our
way.  It is not as strong as it was the last time it showed up.  Still
mixed field groupings but it has lost some of its vigor.  I expect noise
and QSB to test our mettle.

I was reading about stellarator design when I learned the coordinate
system of a torus.  One axis is called toroidal while the other is
called poloidal.  Just in case you ever need to describe an exact point
on a torus.  Then I thought about how it would work in Scrabble: id -
oloid - poloid - poloidal  A good, additive series.

2024-04-13 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

Spring is mostly here.  More flowers, more birds, more pollen, and
more bugs.  Sun appears more often these days.  However, more snow is
due on Tuesday.  Frosty nights kill off the biting flies, I appreciate
being eaten less.

The sunspot number is below 100 but the sun is quite active. A few
smaller CMEs are bouncing off the magnetosphere causing some aurora,
QSB, and hissing.  The large, active sunspot group from two weeks ago is
coming back.  By Monday it should be changing propagation again.

2024-03-30 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

Some weeks nothing goes right, this was not one of them. Light rain
then sun and mild temperatures.  More flowers and more birds.  Snow is
melting above me so streams are full.  The ground was dry enough to let
me check the forest.  I have much less damage than my neighbors.  Their
trees are quite a bit younger, they snapped where green wood met more
mature timber.  Clear growth assures trees will survive; any kinks or
forks can be fatal to them.

The sunspot number is low and the flux rate is lower too. However,
the sun has been quite active this week.  There is still a possible
earth effective flare from 3615.  I expect a more quiet band than we
have had lately.  Less roaring.  There may even be less QSB.  But there
should be no whistling from clouds of protons, or hissing from high
speed electrons.  Just normal random noises with (hopefully) more
ordered Morse code.  If the gaps in the noise are rhythmic enough you
are easy copy :)

2024-03-23 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

The last bit of snow melted yesterday.  Winter may be done, spring
can take over.  A few daffodils are turning yellow.  They should open
this week.  Many birds have returned, some of them have started to
nest.  I saw a Steller's Jay collecting moss from a nearby limb.

There are two CMEs aimed at earth.  One of them will hit tomorrow,
the other the following day.  One sunspot group is spawning more spots
with mixed magnetic fields.  A persistent X class flare lifted one of
those coronal ejections.  The bands should be noisy with many types of QSB.

2024-03-16 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

It was sunny and warm today.  Most of the snow has melted so I went
for a walk to check the damage to the forest.  A few dozen broken trees
ranging from ten inches in diameter to twenty.  Their trunks exploded
into many shards around thirty feet up.  Only the Doug fir shattered;
cedar and hemlock trees are unharmed.  Some birds returned and daffodils
are growing though the remaining snow.

The sun looks almost bare but the flux is still high.  A rain of
protons is absorbing RF around the poles.  There was a strong flare from
a sunspot not yet facing Earth.  Propagation should be OK tomorrow, with
plenty of QSB and a steady hiss from the ion flow.

NACA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, was the
precursor to NASA.  During the 1920s they codified airfoils with four

Good Evening,

The snow is no longer in the trees.  It has all fallen after pruning

It is a cold winter,
Away is the songbird.
And gone is her traveler,
She waits at home.

The sun is on holiday,
No leaves on the trees.
The animals sleep
While cold North wind blows.

The snowflakes are falling,
The roof a white blanket.
There's ice on the window pane,
She waits alone.

She sits by the fireside,
The room is so warm.
Her children are sleeping,
She waits in their home.
