Re: [Elementary-dev-community] 3rd party app ppa

2013-04-08 Thread Chris Timberlake
You may have better luck just having the AppStore register the developer's
PPA or Repository. Then implementing a pay wall; after the user pays the
ppa is added and app is downloaded. Then you could offer the developer an
ability to check license/purchases through a library. Then developers would
just submit their App and PPA through an online portal. You wouldn't have
to find the PPA's the developers would add their own. Then you server would
record package numbers and the AppStore would check for updates on a cron.

Flow Of Purchase:
1. User Finds App.
2. User Pays for App.
3. PPA Is added and App is installed.
4. App is ran user is checked and a certification is made for that machine.
So the user can use offline.

Personally, for an AppStore I'd just abandon PPA's all together. They don't
fit into an AppStore nicely.

Launchpad offers private ppa. It could be better then our own repo. :)

That's a possibility. Let's all take a breath and remember that AppCenter
is a ways off still from being a full service, and right now we're focusing
on getting Luna finally out the door.

After Luna's release, we can discus how we want to handle third-party apps
in greater detail. Just a moonshot idea: host our own repos for it so we
can have paid software as well. ;)

Re: [Elementary-dev-community] 3rd party app ppa

2013-04-06 Thread Aditya Vaidya
Maybe something like the software that mentors.debian.net uses would work?
They use Debexpo (http://wiki.debian.org/Debexpo), and it looks like it can
be deployed on anything; I'm guessing that includes whatever is being used
to host the elementary website. The whole project is meant to help people
collaborate on packaging and such, so maybe once someone's package gets
"approved", it can be manually pushed to the elementary third-party PPA by
an elementary team member.

Any thoughts?

Sincerely,
kroq-gar78

Re: [Elementary-dev-community] 3rd party app ppa

2013-04-06 Thread Mario Guerriero
We should only create a ppa and put some rules for it. Every 3rd party
developer who wants his app in this ppa should email one of us and then
we will review the app quality and approve/disapprove its adding.
That's all.

I wrote almost every third party's debian packaging so that would be
me maintaining that. I'm up for it, it's just possible it could get
out of control.

Hi,

3rd party apps which follow elementary style are popping up like

awesome applications like Birdie, Foto, Agenda and many others.

My idea is to put all of them in one ppa, owned by elementary-os
launchpad team, in order to have them in only one place. In this
way I would be able to have a better platform where get
elementary apps to sponsor in AppCenter.

Moreover a bigger range of users and testers would encourage
developers to build an elementary app.

Cody I mean that every third party developer should be able to put his

anything. They must have care of them own stuffs.
