Re: [elinks-dev] ELinks Icons
Thanks for the proposed icons. Two people on the elinks-dev list have commented on them so far. The elinks5_* icons were preferred and elinks7_* came second. In my view though, the lower-case "e" of elinks5_* is too similar to the Internet Explorer logo. Besides, it might make the incorrect "eLinks" spelling more common. I don't think it is necessary to have any sort of "E" or chain in the icon. Here are comments from someone I asked in RL, translated by me: "elinks1: This one I like best. The blue sphere could depict the global dimension of elinks. The spherical symbol would be easy to recognize as a browser, because for example Firefox and Safari also have roundish symbols. However, the frame around the symbol distinguishes it from Firefox and especially from Safari, of which is it more reminiscent. elinks5: My attention is caught in the e letter, in which I see the side profile of a gray face. The shape is bawling angrily, with the mouth wide open and the eyes flaming. The shape can also look stupid, because in the place of the blue rectangular eye, there is a hole straight to the blue background, that is, the shape would appear to have a hollow, empty head. Quite an unpleasant icon, irritating even. elinks7: A gray icon, in which there is a piece of chain. There it is, but it doesn't seem to reach anywhere further - sure doesn't remind of any global dimension. The gray icon is too colorless. At least in my own computer, it wouldn't be easy to distinguish from the grey background of the dock." Personally, I hoped to see non-rectangular icons, with transparent backgrounds. Although elinks7 has a rectangular frame, it had one person liking it and nobody objecting to it, so I could add that one to the source tree if we can agree on the licensing. Unless you first want to try something else, that is. Most of ELinks is licensed under GNU GPL v2, but I think that is too restrictive for icons because they often appear in screen shots and people distributing those should not be required to provide transparent or vector versions of the icons. pgpo2V8jC5srP.pgp Description: PGP signature ___ elinks-dev mailing list elinks-dev@linuxfromscratch.org http://linuxfromscratch.org/mailman/listinfo/elinks-dev

I've been saying for years that ELinks needs an icon, but I lack any sort of proficiency to do that -- so thank you. If you want personal preference, I advocate the elinks5_*.png icons -- I like those. :) Colours are nice. -- Thomas Adam ___ elinks-dev mailing list elinks-dev@linuxfromscratch.org http://linuxfromscratch.org/mailman/listinfo/elinks-dev
