Thanks! I rebooted after upgrading the kernel, of course, into level 3, but I was thinking that since X wasn't running there would be no need after upgrading fglrx (and that with linux, you never need to reboot :-) ). But now I have rebooted and X is working, or at least it doesn't segfault.
