I am not helpful here, but would simply like to add that I would also love an answer to this, as well as times when italics don't seem to work around periods and commas, like and /then,/ well, ... [O] org-babel and lilypond broken after update
I also posted this in emacs.help, then thought it might be better here. I'm an enthusiastic and error-prone new user of emacs (24.3.1) and org-babel (org 8.2.7c). I've been using lilypond mode in the context of org-mode documents, using the command ly-tangle to typeset music into midi and pdf files. It's been working great for the past few weeks, until today ... I updated some packages through the package manager, including org and org-plus-contrib, and now M-x ly- gives [no match] in the minibuffer. I didn't mess with my .emacs at all, which contains these lines: ;; lilypond (autoload 'LilyPond-mode lilypond-mode) (org-babel-do-load-languages 'org-babel-load-languages '( (emacs-lisp . t) (sh t) (org t) (latex . t) (lilypond t))) (setq ly-arrange-mode t) (setq ly-nix-ly-path lilypond) I'm wondering if I put something somewhere that got clobbered when the new versions installed in my .emacs.d/elpa folder. Or if the new version might have a bug. Thank you, if you have any help for me! -Steven

[O] latex markup in org?
I've been learning to export from org to latex (to pdf), and have had great success. There's a simplification to the process I'd like to make, though, if it's possible. Right now I use files: file.org and filestyle.sty. The .sty gives the latex-specific instruction, and I point to it from file.org with a line of #+LATEX_HEADER: \usepackage{filestyle}. So I tried putting the contents of filestyle.sty near the top of file.org inside of #+BEGIN_latex and #+END_latex, but it doesn't quite work. It incompletely works, which is perplexing... Org has its own markup to pass to latex for these I think, like #+AUTHOR. Is there a similar one for \documentclass ? You will need to add a class to org-latex-classes. You should read the documentation for the variable with C-h v org-latex-classes RET. You can try customizing this variable but I find the customize interface to it somewhat confusing, so I prefer to do it by hand - you need to add something like this to the end of your initialization file (you probably just need chapters): (setq sa/sffms-latex-class '(novel \\documentclass{sffms} (\\chapter{%s} . \\chapter*{%s}) (\\section{%s} . \\section*{%s}) (\\subsection{%s} . \\subsection*{%s}) (\\subsubsection{%s} . \\subsubsection*{%s}))) (eval-after-load ox-latex '(add-to-list 'org-latex-classes sa/sffms-latex-class)) Then your org file should look like this: #+LATEX_CLASS: novel #+TITLE: Fahrenheit 451 #+AUTHOR: Ray Bradbury #+OPTIONS: toc:nil * The Hearth and the Salamander It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, blackened and /changed/. Note that the latex class is known as novel to org because of the way I defined sa/sffms-latex-class. You could call it whatever you want, by changing the two instances of novel. That's a beginning but you will probably have to modify some other things. Just put them in a style file, say misc.sty: \runningtitle{Fahrenheit 451} \authorname{Ray Bradbury} plus any other settings from the sfmms documentation you think are necessary, and add a line to your .org file: #+LATEX_HEADER: \usepackage{misc} to pick them up. That should get you some way towards your goal. Nick Hi Nick, Sorry to call you Rick earlier; I just noticed I did that. So, this has been incredibly helpful. I've just processed an org file into a pdf that's about 93% totally correct for formatting. Furthermore, it looks great; way better than the output I typically get from Word or LibreOffice. And way, /way/ easier to achieve. Thanks so much for your help here, and everyone else on this thread, too! I'm sure I'll have questions further on but I'm going to call this a success for today and go mix a martini. Best! Steven PS Strangely, I just read Fahrenheit 451 last week. Odd coincidence

[O] org-babel, lilypond, tables
I'm wondering if someone could tell me if this idea is impossible. I'm trying to find a way to leverage org-tables in a document containing lilypond markup for a piano part such that both staves occupy the same line, visually (instead of the lefthand notes occupying the top of the doc and the righthand notes occupying the bottom). Right now I'm accomplishing this with a vertical split in the buffer, which works, but is clunky. I'd love to do something like: left hand | right hand | measure --+-+-- a16 b c d e f g a | a8 b d f e4~ | %m1 c e gs4 a8 g| e g c'4 g d b | %m2 et cetera. This is easy enough to lay out in org mode, and it would look terrific, but I can't imagine how to accomplish it such that the lilypond markup would respond correctly to ly-tangle without bracketing every cell in #+BEGIN_SRC LILYPOND #END_SRC (and even then, I doubt what would happen.) Maybe the answer is You just have to get used to the way things are, which is fine--even that would at least get me thinking about other problems. Thank you! Steven Arntson

[O] more from org-babel newbie
I'm trying to get going with org-babel and lilypond music markup. I have the system basically functioning, but there's an elementary issue I can't seem to wrap my brain around. The reason I'm excited to use org with lilypond files is the foldable headers *, **, *** etc, as well as drawers and tables. However, that's available only in an org-mode buffer, and I'm also wanting to use lilypond-mode, which gives excellent colored markup and indentation. How do I get the advantages of both? Or is that not even what I should be after? I may be fundamentally missing what's potentially useful about all of this for my musical use case! Thank you, Steven Arntson
