What happens if you manually connect to that machine, then say `exec
/bin/sh', then type the above command (embedded newlines and all)?

The shell prompt should be "\n/////\n" with two newline characters in
it.  Is this the case?  Maybe one of the commands that precede setting
the shell prompt is the problem?
